Has there been any change in the recommended target speed? We seem to hear of a decision of speed increased but have seen nothing official to that decision. ???

targetbreaker if it goirs bang I probley shot it.

its funny speed is the key for setters, but I have seen it first hand a 38 mph target will land just about
50 yards every time with in a inch of the stake. check with 2 diff guns, one would read 40 mph, the other 38 mph. so now what about that 42 mph speed stake target @ 50 yds 9.5 ft hight @ 10 yds.
42 mph lands 60-65 yards out ???? rule say 50 yds give or take 1 yard.
so most guns do not read the same. if you want a good bird high scores go back to stake setting if you grounds is set up for it.

I have to see that first hand( 38 mph=50 yards) I believe the target will fall short of 50 yards, who on here has set targets with a good Radar gun, and what were your results, please specify the name of the Radar Gun.

Using our Bushnell cheapie radar gun, at forty-two MPH, at just about nine & one half foot, target falls at just fifty yards. Trap angle set at twenty-two or twenty three degrees in still air.

the point is the guns do not read the same speed Gary, the targets were set @9.5 drop at 50 yds. other brand other results in target length, 42 with this one 44 with this one if your grounds can not be staked, how the heck do you know how far there going.? I crank on it to 60 yds and got speeds 42-45 mph.

Stakes are totally worthless unless the ground is level from the trap to the stake. Think again!

Thought everything started with the level of the stations....... everything else set to them.......... Larry

    you are right !
but there are a lot of old clubs that were just trap house side walks, but not built to level, with some trowing over hills, or water not level ground, so they came up with speed gun setting, my only point is I have not seen any that read the same, some traps have rubber band springs and other still have coil spring, that target reacts differnt at the same speed off both... so the birds vary a lot from trap to trap.

The Wallowa Oregon trap field is much like you describe, using the posts as a starting point the traps are elevated about 30" to be on the same level, the 30' point requires a 36" mast to set the target height and at the 50 yard stake trap level is actually 50" above ground level, we use the mast plus a T bar for height and a radar gun for proper distance........ 38 mph it wont get close to 50 yards. 43 or 44 you will get there. Targets should be 45 mph minimum. jmho

sounds like somebody should calibrate their radar gun, they make tuning forks to do it and all guns don't use the same one

The 50 yard stake should be level at the top of stake to level of trap using a Laser level. Target should hit top of the stake on Un-Level Ground, where the ground slopes down. I have seen Stakes 3 foot high and higher, to be level w/trap

Lets see now, if the ground is higher at 50 yards then one must dig a hole and drop the bird in the hole? Hmmmmmmmmm. New form of golf??? Hole in one?? Larry
