I have an Anschutz 17 HMR American Varminter that comes with a threaded muzzle 1/2" x 28" threads, hence the name American. I just read where our Ohio governor signed a bill that allows these contraptions. Since I shoot right off our picnic table on the patio and my wife's sewing shop is about 10 yards away, I thought it would be great to purchase one. Not to mention one for my long range varmint gun, 25-06. Works great for yotes. I can shoot across 3 Zip codes when the corn or beans are harvested in the fields behind house. That's the good news, now for the bad. Once I checked into acquiring the devices, I found that I had to jump through all kinds of bureaucratic BS, including paying $200.00 for a stamp, and this is for each gun! Now i'm wondering if it's really worth it, not mentioning some jack booted ATF thugs busting into my house. I can understand the back ground check, but $200/per gun, com on man.
Has any body who has legally purchased one have the same problem?

There are almost a million suppressors on the NFA Registry. Pretty routine, pay the tax, do the paperwork, wait a while, and enjoy.

A little hint. Don't buy the cheapest can out there. Some of them don't dampen the sound much. Do your homework.

Thanks Shooting Coach, and i'll do as you say about home work. Might have to sweet talk Miss's Santa about one. She may like the idea about not so much noise around her workshop. HO HO HO every one.

Rick are you sure you really want a suppressor?
You are going to get in to a lot of red tape plus if the ATF can come in to your house at any time day or night and you better know where that suppressor is plus the paper work.
IF you need to talk with a Attorney about this I have a friend/ shooting buddy that's a Attorney in to gun laws and gun rights big time.

They don't work well unless you use sub-sonic ammo ( they don't work like in the movies) and that don't work well for varmint hunting. Besides rumor has it that the suppressor will be taken off the NFA list in the future and will be a common as any hunting item.

After the $200 License and $300-$500+ for the suppressor and the 4 month Plus waiting period, my friend had his Application returned with the M/O Check after waiting 3 months, only to re-send it back after some minor document item not answered.

Thanks for taking time to respond, did not fall on deaf ears. Forget it for now. And besides, I like to stay off the grid and this is no way to do that. The money is better in my pocket then Big Brother. If like one poster said, one day they may be easy to get, then I may bite for one.

I have had Class I or Class II FFL's for nearly 30 yrs. Moved to an area where no business licenses may be issued, so am a Private Person for now.

Never been audited, never one problem. Don't know of one person with NFA toys who has had any issues if they were audited. ATF does not have the manpower to check private NFA toys unless you have a locker full. Often the audit is made to correct THEIR records. LOL

Go to an established dealer who will make sure you fill out the form correctly. Just like your income tax form, if it has a glitch they will want it corrected.

With supersonic ammo in a good can, one does not need hearing protection unless they are really close to the gun or are shooting it. A cheap can is a different story.

If you believe in "the List", you are likely already on it. :p

Does the permit go with the can or the gun? Could you use the same suppressor on different guns?

320090T the permit is to the buyer for that can. The permit is not transferable to new owner or a different can. The can could be used on a different gun as long as the can is in your possession at all times.
