I am looking at a few guns. All the better deals are guns that are ported. Are there any proven studies to show that porting decreases muzzle velocity?
"All the better deals are guns that are ported", think about that for a minute ... I am not big on porting or choke tubes for that matter, though many others like them ... I had one gun that was ported, sold it the first day I shot it and do not have any desire to own another one ... The reason all of the ported guns got the deals on them is because for the most part nobody wants them ... You might like them, give it a test drive and see what you think ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
I would have to respectfully disagree with Bill on this subject. I have owned many trap guns, some ported, some not. I have never turned down a good buy on a trap gun solely because it was ported. In fact, I actually prefer a ported barrel over a non ported barrel. Just a mind thing I guess.... Both the single barrel and the O/U barrels on my Mx3 Special were ported by the late Tom Seitz, who also did the barrel work. I wouldn't trade them for a pristine set of Mx3 Special barrels that were not ported, for any reason. There are good deals everywhere on good trap guns right now, so just shoot as many as you can and decide for yourself which gun you like. A ported gun will shoot just as well as a non ported gun so why let it bother you? I have seen ported guns sell for more money than a like gun that is not ported, so resale value, IN GENERAL, does not effect a sale if the gun shoots where you look. We all have our preferences....
I've never been a chart study guy I used my real life experience or perception of such. Saying that I had my Beretta's ported and choke work done in the mid 80's and I think it helped with recoil and and target breaking. Factory Beretta's back then were tight and had a hot center, I wanted a more even pattern. So for target shooting I wouldn't let a ported bbl bother me one way or the other, I'd pay more attention to choke restriction. I didn't though like a ported bbl for live birds, ported bbls didn't seem to kill as well as non ported so maybe there is something to velocity loss, I don't know. Brad
I found the porting to be a distraction with the blow by coming out and there seems to be an increase in noise level on posted barrels, might just be a mind thing but I'll take mine plain (un ported) ... I was probably looking in the wrong place for it to bother me, but it did ... I have witnessed a few ends of barrels blown off of ported barrels, one was my Fathers gun ... I have never seen anything that has convinced me that porting is a good thing on any gun ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
Porting I believe is a personal thing if you like it porting seems to work for you but if you don't like it porting does not seem to work for you and has no value. I would agree that ported guns appear louder when shooting next to them and depending on the size and style of the porting you may get some discharge out of the ports. Some porting requires cleaning which adds to maintenance and cleaning time. As far as increasing/decreasing the value of the gun again depends on whether you like or dislike porting, so again to each his/her own.
I agree that ported guns are noisier. Sometimes you'll get some crap blowback in your face also in a bad wind. The old slits cut was far worse than the little holes. Brad
