Just starting reloading again after 15 years. Picked up a couple pounds of e3. I've heard its clean and does well in frigid weathter. Anything else you guys can add. I'd like to learn more about it. Thanks, JD
I was given a 1 lb'er to try. From looking at the charts you have to be aware of pressure. I have been told that it is clean burning powder with low recoil. I will believe the low recoil when I feel it for myself.
I have loaded up some Rio hulls and throwing 1 ounce, powered by 15.7 gr of e3. Very low recoil ! Plenty of power at 16 yards. I will be staying with this load in the forseeable future.
Please explain how a common load : [AA hull - w 209 primer - AA wad - 1 1/8 oz - 1200 fps load] is 10,450 psi and you can still call that a low pressure/recoil load.
Trap Haus You can pick any recipe you want with e3. It is designed to be much like 700x. It is a low volume, high pressure powder. Very fast burning and hot. That is why it is clean. Compare your stated load with that of green dot and the pressure of the green dot would be lower. At 15.7 grains green dot you might not know the wad left the barrel. I used the AA shell, AA wad, 1 1/8, 1200 fps to show what a very common load pressure would be like. We will have to disagree here.
Try some Vectan AS for your Remington auto. For straight wall hulls 19.2 grains for 1 1/8oz for the tapered hulls 18.3 for 1 1/8. BPI lists a ton of loads for 1 oz and below loads. Great, clean powder for the old 1100 trap I have (1963) and the new 1100 Competition synthetic........... Larry
E3 powder was created as the next generation of shotgun powder. It's a 2 base powder that works well in hot and cold weather. It's main use is in 7/8oz and 1oz loads. If you go to the Alliant Powder web site you could pretty much taylor a load to your liking. I mainly shoot sporting clays, most of my factory loads are 1250 - 1300 FPS using Fiocchi ammunition. That being said I load 1oz of 8 1/2's at 1250 FPS. This load also works great for 16 yd trap and skeet. Good shooting.
I always llllliked a ggggggood fffffast rrrrrrreload with a lllllllittle kick tttttto it. Nnnnnnever bbbbbothered me nnnnnnone.
Been using e3 for several years. Works good for me for lower velocity 1 1/8 loads (my only load). My recipe is 15.0 of e3, Clay Buster CB1118 wad in Game Club hulls. Cronos around 1150 FPS. Very clean and I can tell any difference with temperature. Mild recoil.
I load 17.5 with 1 1/8 of 8's loaded in Old Style Lt. Gray Win. with new style 8 pedal Orange Down Range WJ-12-RPL and Cheddite primer. Works the same in Rem. STS or Gold NITRO. I shoot TM-1 with PFS so I can't say much about recoil BUT load will smoke targets from about anywhere. VERY CLEAN powder. New wads stay open and makes loading easier and faster. Can't tell any difference Summer to Winter here in Illinois.
IMHO, E3 is a nice powder. All I load with it are 1oz. 16.4 grains, CB8100-12 wad, #8 shot. Rem GC or ACF I use the same load for 16yd Trap and Skeet. I can shoot 100 at each in a day and not feel beat up. Clean burning and despite the higher pressure, is more of a pat than a punch for recoil.
I have probably loaded about 20# in 1 ounce 12 gauge loads. I really like it.. One observation: I found that I can make velocity with notably less powder than what’s listed in the manuals. You may want to check your loads over a chrono. YMMV.
Great for 1 oz. loads, but is a bit peaky, but not as peaky as Clays. I'd use something else for 1 1/8th oz loads, like Green Dot or even Red Dot.
