On more than one occasion I have been peppered with Shells when shooting doubles beside a fellow shooter, shooting a semi-automatic gun. This has always happened at fun shoots at small clubs. Question; Is it unethical and or unsportsmanlike to use a semi-auto at a ATA shoot, which may affect the shooter beside you? Thanks for your input.
40 years ago when half the shooters shot Remington 1100's and popped new Remington and Winchester hulls it never was an issue. Suddenly, with nearly everyone popping eurotrash hulls and fewer people reloading it's becoming a big complaint. As long as the autoloader ejects empty hulls slightly in front of the shooter it's best to just get over it. Besides, not every new shooter is ready to spring for a K-80.
I try really hard never to shoot next to a auto when shooting doubles, unless its ejecting away or in front of me.....I would not like it if a hull dinged my gun either, its just common courtesy
you go spend your hard earned money on a nice krieghoff or perazzi and see how you like some A hole bouncing empty hulls off it.
Had a squad a few years ago refuse to shoot with someone with a Semi and per the ATA Rule book was asked to re-squad. 15.All guns used by contestants must be equipped, fitted and utilized so as not to eject empty shells in a manner that substantially disturbs or interferes with other contestants.
No there would be two of us. I have never even thought about using a release trigger. Pushing 83 years young, maybe when I get old I might need one. Roger C.
"40 years ago when half the shooters shot Remington 1100's and popped new Remington and Winchester hulls it never was an issue. " from post above. I have to respectfully disagree. I shot 40 years ago, and it was just as irritating then as it is now. Your shells should not bother anyone on the squad in my opinion.
So you were one not shooting the above. Good for you. Many of us were not that fortunate and were glad to be able to afford an 1100. Those old tuning fork shell catchers weren't that great.
I have not experienced a problem next to an 1100 or Super X Model 1 as long as they were equipped with a trap barrel. Beretta autos have not been so pleasant. There is no excuse. Lots of gun wrenches know how to fix that. Earl Scripture’s Beretta was so fixed.
I shot the Grand one year with a shooter shooting a right handed 1100 on my left and a shooter shooting a left handed 1100 on my right. I got used to it by the end of the second week, broke a 100 straight in one of those events, can't remember which one. I used to shoot a auto, 1100 and super x, but went to the ou. Cost of a doubles gun was what made me shoot an auto. The first three years I shot ata I used my model 12 for everything, including doubles then went to my duck gun one a 1100 and the other a super x. I shot the super x for live birds also and killed several 25's. I never had anyone throw me off a squad back then. Shooters today seem awful fussy. They remind me of skeet shooters, everything has to be JUST SO. Snowflakes. Brad
Brad, You are proof it is the indian not the arrow. You are one of the shooters that could shoot a broom stick and still win. Roger C.
