I have a question concerning form when shooting trap. I have been noticing some people using what i call a chicken wing style of mounting and aiming a shotgun. The exaggerated high elbow looks really uncomfortable to me and I have no idea why they would do it. Any of your gurus out there know why this is used?
The theory is it helps to keep head down, gun locked in the shoulder and better move to target. My friend an Olympic trap shooter says not to do this as it's bad form and does nothing good. I'll go with the olympic trapshooter.
I shoot Olympic trap sometimes and while I have my trigger arm's elbow raised to almost 90 degrees (it feels natural), my other elbow is not raised at all. Whatever is most comfortable to you is what is best. The slightly raised arm helps form a better pocket for the gun butt......or so the theory goes.
Mudpack.........I agree fully with you!!! I am a lefty shooter and ALWAYS have my LEFT elbow up at least 90 degees....When I do it I can feel the stock comb tighen where my face sets on the comb.....helps me stay in that gun especially on hard lefts and rights.
