I am new to trapshooting and I am coming over from the sporting clays side. Should I join the ATA or PITA? Or some other group for registered trapshooting? What are your thoughts and experiences?

LOL. PITA is about as big as a zone shoot in Ohio. And they have four of those. PITA seems to be having a competition with the ATA to see who can throw the easier target.

Want competition? Shoot the team protector shoots or live birds. Big money to get in game with live birds. Best bet if you don’t have the money is protector shoots.

A brand new trap shooter and you're pretty much telling him both orgs suck, to get into protection or live bird shoots. No wonder newcomers walk away.

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say, "PITA seems to be having a competition with the ATA to see who can throw the easier target." Aren't trap targets, well, trap targets? I've shot some hard sporting courses and I am not looking for traps set 45 yards away and throwing quartering out chandelles with speed. I can find plenty of those!

Live birds events are BIG FUN (so is helice) but I'm asking specifically about American trap, and specifically about registering targets in the American Trap discipline. I'm looking for something with reasonable cost and to try something new.

It sounds like the ATA is more available geographically-speaking. Thanks! I'm going to join the ATA!

Christopher, I would be happy to answer you but I'd need to know where you live. It depends a lot on that. No PITA east of the Rockies, little ATA shooting west of them. Both organizations are a shadow of themselves.

    Really ...... A "new shooter" ..... LOL

You have to do better than that .... Sure looks like something someone who brags about abusing the "rules" here would post ...

"Thanks! I'm going to join the ATA!" ..... I bet all "new shooters" with two posts here feel that way ......

I just left the Automn grand. I must commend the Tucson Trap and Skeet board . They are now setting the targets to a tee bar and will not change them unless thay are not in accordance with the ATA rules. They also set a bench marks for both doubles targets. This is going to improve shooting for all members. NO MORE I LIKE HIGH TARGETS SO RESET FOR ME AND MY BUDDIES. The targets were going the recommended speed and distance. Every club throwing registered targets should be mandated to follow the rules. Thank You Tucson Trap & Skeet Roger C.

Tucson is no doubt one of the Premiere Clubs in existence today, they obviously take it seriously and work to get the job done based on what a lot of people have said about it ... Good Job Tucson, keep on keepin on ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Anything else we can help you with chris? The guys on here are more than willing to help a "new guy coming over" from Sporting Clays.

Maybe if you tell us what kind of scores you broke on the Sporting Clays courses, you can get away with scores in the 80's at SC's, we could tell if you if you even had enough talent to try Trap shooting. 80's won't win anything but you could probably still have a lot of fun making new friends that didn't shoot very well either. Not a swipe at you but since you NEVER shot Trap it's just the truth.

We have a few HOF members and shooters that have won a LOT of Trap shooting events over the years. And they were shooting the harder targets so they know a LOT more than someone that started shooting since they ata made the targets easier.

Just trying to help a "new guy coming over" from Sporting Clays.

I doubt "Chris" is in any need of actual Trapshooting help ..... After two posts it is off to ATA land LOL .....

FWIW ..... I think "Chris" knows why some have a severe dislike for the ATA and cyber never-never land ..... The "rules" ONLY apply IF, WHEN, and to WHOM, the mental midgets want ..... The chosen few can openly do as they please, while the mental midgets have their back ..... Such is life, and they can stroke each other until their heart is content .....

And for anyone here that doesn't know ...... I am "Joe" ...... because the mental midgets think I can be no one else LOL ......

When I lived in Idaho, I was a member of both organizations. I think some clubs cross register targets now, so maybe joining both isn't important any longer. When I moved east of the Rockies, all events were ATA.
