I have been reloading the older style AA hulls for quite some time. I recently got some of the new(er) style HS hulls to try. I substituted them in my recipe for the older style (19.5gr Green Dot, Winchester 209 Primer, CB1118-12 wad) and at first, experienced a large hole in the center. I increased the wad pressure significantly and the hole tightened up it is still there. I suspect that the two-piece design of the HS is causing the CB-1118 wad to catch on the lip of the base, which is causing the problem. I would be interested to learn if anyone else has experimented with other wads and have corrected this problem. Thanks for any guidance you may be able to provide.
I’ve been using the dra-12 downrange wads in the newer style AA’s. There just a little shorter and work well. If you are using a mec reloader you’ll have to adjust the cam on the second crimp station to help close the hole. You will notice the whole is slotted. Move it back till you get the desired crimp you want.
The CB-1118 has a lead in taper on the powder cup so it doesn't catch the base wad. I load pretty much the same recipe except I use a Federal primer and no issues. My standard PW 1 1/8oz bushing does drop slightly light @ 487 grains with magnum shot so stack height is still fine even in the newer HS AA hulls. That being said I don't get a hole in the crimp with the dark grey AA's but I do with the Red ones.
"That being said I don't get a hole in the crimp with the dark grey AA's but I do with the Red ones."[/QUOTE] So are the grey hulls different than the red ones??
What clayshtr said is true. Lower the cam adjustment to close hole. I use the cb 1118 with 700x, no problems, with red AA hulls new style.
I believe they are the same material but apparently are different length...that would be the only reason why you would need to adjust the crimp station on the loader to remove the hole. I just prefer not to load them because I can load the grey AA and pretty much all Remington's without touching my loader.
I have set up my Duomatic 375 to load these grey HS shells with no real problem with the hole. I use these shells now strictly for my 1oz loads.. leaving my 800b set up for my 1 1/8 loads. Thanks for everyone's input.
