I wonder which would have the greater attendance? We already know which area has the Largest Lodging Accomadations, A place for the Ladies To Shop, and a Nice place for the Hubbies to Take Them Out To Eat, Close to the Air Port, and the Interstate to drive Their Big Motor Homes and Pull Trailers, Interstate I-71 is only 1/4 mile away from CC Entrance. Dr.longshot
Doc.... Are you touching that Clear Athens shine again? Ohio has the Cardinal Classic. It is getting larger every year. Approaching that of the shoot in Illinois. In a year or 2 with the recent trends I would assume it will be bigger. You post worries me a bit.
What kind of vendor participation would you anticipate Dr? I think it would be worth a road trip to check it out!
I am not so sure about the doc post either. Maybe he has been stopping along the road picking some of that Athens herb. You have the Cardinal Classic, Buckeye, and the state shoot. Pufff!
Been there done that, remember when the ATA said if you want to be a vendor at the GRAND you had to have a building? There would be no tent vendors allowed, sucked some in w/buildings, and let Tent Vendors in. Vandalia did the same thing in the latter years, identical results. CC has the Cardinal Classic & The Buckeye Classic, Ohio State Shoot, and could hold the 4th large shoot "The Ohio Grand American" CC is at the Largest Trapshooting Mecca in the USA, Make another name up if this one doesn't fit guys, open to suggestions. Some of you have short memories. Vendors spent $Thousands of Dollars to comply, For What? More Lies.!!! Dr.longshot
They now have that shine in several flavors by the quart jars, Apple, Cinnamon,+others they haul it to Sparta too.
The ATA has a long term commitment to Sparta ... so your suggestion will never happen until the State of Illinois closes the Sparta facility.
You need to stop obsessing with the "Grand" ...... What it 'was' ... and what it currently 'is' ... is very different. You can compare it to the 'modern' Olympics. Being the best 'Amateur' in the world is one thing .... and now .... Many who read this stuff have no idea 'how it was' .... and probably for the most part do not care. The Cardinal Center will do fine without stirring old emotions. Who knows ... they may become the next big attraction for the big offerings like cars, gold, or who knows. Starting threads like this puts you in an immediate defensive position, leading to hurt feelings and damaged pride.
Gary, before suggestions and speculation ramp up, why don't you call or email Luke Spengler at CC and see what he says about the possibility of having a fourth big shoot on those grounds. Need to check with OSTA as well. And what do you mean by "CC is at the largest Trapshooting Mecca in the USA"? Columbus? Marengo? Central Ohio? Sparta is certainly bigger, so is Linn Creek.
I think User1 and Rich made some very good and valid points ... The "Grand American Championship Trapshoot" is nothing more than a shoot that has that as a name and in name only ... The Cardinal Center seems to have a great following than can only help them increase attendance over time and most people say they really cater to the shooters which shooters love ... The club with the most acreage is meaningless if they do not have the shooters to utilize the facility completely ... The name or any name applied to a shoot means nothing if shooters do not attend ... The Spring Grand moved from the old Phoenix Club down to Tucson and has obviously done well in the transistion, same with the Autumn Grand ... Ohio does not need another Grand, if anything they need another shoot with an original name to create something that shooters think of when they think of or hear the name, what ever it might be ... Las Vegas had the "Fall Handicap" which drew a lot of shooters based on the program, if someone, anyone said "Fall Handicap", you thought of Las Vegas ... Cardinal Center may not want another big shoot, the big shoots are a lot of work to get them going and keep them organized year after year ... Same with any of the clubs that host the bigger shoots, but only they know for sure ... I been there and done that and there is more to it than meets the eye long before and long after the shoot happens ... wpt ...(yac) ...
I've been to Vandalia four times starting in 1982 and the last attendance was in 2001. I've shot in Sparta the last two years. They are both great. Sparta is a better place to shoot and experience. Vandalia was miles ahead with food & lodging. That is a real problem for Sparta. But this is where we find ourselves so accept and enjoy it.
It's guys like you with your input that causes problems, and angers others, they have a Great Lakes Grand, what is wrong with an Ohio Grand? Would one work? If not explain why? They the ATA has so many Grands now, Whats wrong with another one? Dr.longshot
TGV011: I have been to the Grand in Vandalia 33 times, there was and never will be anything like it, Never. Gary Bryant Dr.longshot
Gary as you know I quit shooting ATA three years ago. I've also quit tournament directing for the Cardinal Center. I didn't quit either because I don't like trap shooting. I quit the ATA because I didn't want my entree fees to be the ones that broke the ATA even for the year, I quit tournament directing because how could I promote registered ATA trap shooting when I wouldn't do it myself. I felt like the French train conductor making the trains filled with Jews headed to Germany run on time in WWII, I new what awaited them at the end of the line and it wasn't good. I miss the old Grand as much as anyone. Vandalia was the grand to me, but it's dead. I've moved on, Ohio doesn't need the grand to have good trap shoots the grand is just a name. Look at the list of satellite grands, the grand was a brand name now it's a cheap whored up title, meaningless. You need to remember there are about 70,000 less ATA shooters than there were in 1980. Ohio has about 1800 of which about 500 are kids. The mainstay shooter that you remember is no more, he died with Vandalia. I've printed facts and figures so many times that I've given up doing it. So many of those ATA sickos on the other site , Hunter44, greentitan, Jim Brown, ect are full of it. They rant and call names but have NO FACTS on there side. I'm glad to see you back on the computer, keep stirring, but I'd give up on The Ohio Grand American, I think the house is full, no rooms available. Brad
"Would one work? If not explain why? " If it would work, then explain how. When, with what and who's support - how would it fit in the current schedule of events at CC? Gary, you just want to argue about hypothetical issues. Do you want a "Grand" in Ohio so you can shoot all the events here at home, or do you want a "Grand" in Ohio just to have it in Ohio? Vandalia is gone; and it won't ever be back. Treasure the memories you have but get over it!
Our sport of trapshooting and our ATA has enough Grand's already across the country. The real lifeblood of registered shooting has always come from the smaller clubs all over the world. Every time a new Grand is added to the mix, more shooters usually supporting the small clubs must save that money to shoot at a Grand somewhere else. We're losing the small clubs at an alarming rate and that's a sad situation for all concerned. HAP
Gary, The rights of those satellite grands you mentioned above are sold to the hosting clubs. By the time the ATA is paid, it leaves very little room for the facility to make any money. Camping fee's, target prices, and every thing else goes up to pay the cost of hosting the event. It looks the Cardinal Center and the shooters are much better off to keep the titles of their shoots as they are, as to paying the ATA to call it a satellite grand. Just my opinion.
Ohio and Vandalia is at the center of the most trapshooters in the country, OH, Pa, Mi, WVA, Ky, In, this is where trapshooting was born, that's what I meant! And Thanks Mike and excuse me Rich, it was in JEST Dr.longshot
How many times have you shot in Sparta? You can shoot there all you want. I for one will not spend a friggin penny in that State. Never
Once and it was hot, no shade, that was enough, I have stated this before, never going again, I had to see it formyself, but nobody responded about the Vendor Building criteria, Why wasn't that criteria adhered to, no building, no vending? Plain and simple, same happened in Vandalia too. During the Carson Woods Era. Dr.longshot
Dreaming: It would be held in the very same place it moved from, talk about vendors and food, Budweiser Beer, Vandalia had it all, That Freight Company never built there and a move was not necessary. We owned a lot of the land and only leased what we needed, the HOF was there, Carson Woods Drove a Spear in the ATA Heart w/his actions of GOOD FAITH (sic)
Dr., if your thinking of a possible satellite Grand in Ohio I would have to say DON'T DO IT!, as you mentioned Michigan has the Great Lakes Grand but from what I've been told it isn't a money maker it's a money loser. Friends on the BOD have openly questioned it's cost effectiveness. unless maybe you're a French train conductor!!!..lol
