I got a text from Luke today that the Shot Screen had some major damage from the wind, about 30K worth in fact. 4 of the 85' poles broke off at the ground because the guy wires pulled out. I don't know what banks but it looked like 4 to me but I might be wrong. Maybe someone from down there knows. Brad

    Brad,
I was told the poles that broke were in front of the bunker. Of course the bunker is next to trap 4 D so it would probably effect bank 4.

Just a WAG but if I remember correctly the ones in front of the bunker were taller and had extra panels on them
to compensate for the higher targets

Could be? the reason the wind had more of an effect in that section

I thought the same thing as Flyers.

    Brad,
I sent some pictures of the poles to Ann’s phone. I’m not bright enough to figure out how to get them into this thread.

Strange...….and I heard a business card was found nearby. Firearm dealer from Illinois was on it. And there was a pile of lead shot missing from the area. Wonder what happened to those support lines?

Is it just me or does it look like bug holes in that pole?

Looks like they used old poles.

That is an old pole. It appears that it was used in part of their guying system

The photos I took on the west side showed new poles. This picture in September.

You can see the height difference in the August 30 pictures
7 panels on the broken poles in the pic showing the damage 4 panels on all the other banks
The broken poles sure look used

Well gentleman, for the shorter poles we can supply brand new examples.
Now for these really tall ones we can provide you with used poles, not that much call for that height you understand, but you shouldn't have a problem with them.

Like I said, just a WAG
Either that or all the good ones came from one outfit and the taller ones came from some other supplier

    Question
Does the company that sells and installs the
Shotstop system provide ALL of the components?

And please, for the guy that is going to respond with, why don't you call them yourself and ask, I would if I was asked but I assume Mr. Fishburn has already done that

In any case I hate to see that happen to the CC and to Mr. Fishburn

Anyone know a guy that knows a guy that can get steel poles that height?

Why did they not backfill the holes completely??? One would think they would come back and top off after initial settling?

However, did they not expect this to happen?? Power poles snap off in winds and don't have a kite like this attached (also, not 85' tall, whether that is 85' above ground or 85' total length.... irrelevant i suppose)...

Inevitable, I'd anticipate several more to go down once the spring thunder storms roll around... Get your check book out CC...

I just got off the phone with Jake, he said it looks like the wind pulled the guy wire holders out of the ground, probably in the wet lands first, and three poles in front of the pit went down. He said you could still shoot on bank 4 fine so it was the high poles that went. I guess the anchors were in the wetland in front of the central entree building.

I don't think back fill was an issue as they snapped off at the ground so they were in the ground pretty good, they didn't pull out, broke off. It will be interesting how they cope with the wind from here in out.

looks like the poles that family guy posted on the west end were new pressure treated poles and the one that is in the picture that snapped off was not pressure treated and definitely older and not of the same quality.

Those poles aren’t just old. They are very old!! That isn’t something easy to hide. Someone had to be in charge of quality control. That pole was sitting in a lot a long time.

Im still thinking a system to lower the curtain would be the answer. How? I have no clue, but there are some real smart people out there that could figure it out.

I've never seen buckshot enter from different angles. If it was buckshot, a close look would find the pellets. Those holes look like they were drilled with a +/- 5/16" bit. Sabotage? Maybe that's what Gipson was doing when he was last seen in Ohio.

"Drywood termites infest dry, undecayed wood. This includes structural lumber as well as dead limbs of native trees and shade and orchard trees, utility poles, posts, and lumber in storage."

Queer Black Assed Trapant - known to hang out near skeet fields and adult bookstores. There is an adult bookstore across the street. They are running out of room. Rumor is Jack will be building more skeeter fields. Supply and demand.

Instead of ants I think that pole might have caught some of Dr. Longshot's famous protector loads when he was shooting on the pit. Kentucky 9's, 4's and 5's if I remember right. It could be about the right for a second shot.

I do though understand your concern with all the skeet fields around and how close to the "store" the wind hit. I'd think the prudent thing for Jack to do is to move those pit shooters over there by those skeet shooters to get them all in the same place as far away from that store as possible. I'd think putting a new sporting clays course over in that direction would be a good idea too.

Not drywoods, they dont like cold weather. Has to be sub-terrainiums if termites at all.
Id bet on ants, ifin I was a better.

Maybe the poles were "stored" in a warm weather climate before being shipped? In any case, as Kiehl posted, looks like they are VERY old.

BIG PAPA should be able to tell us whether the contractor supplied those poles. Need him to get back to the keyboard.

5 to 1 the Cardinal Center provided the poles and a contractor used what was on site.

Sure hope no more poles suffered catastrophic failure from tonight's high wind warnings. Here where I live in Ohio we had 80 mph wind gusts. with tornado warnings.

That pole is not only weathered and bug infested, but it is not pressure treated, and it is Cedar. Not near as strong as those that are in the other areas. Makes you wonder if these were not utility poles at one time seeing that they need to be taller.

Mr. Flynn has it right. Cedar is not strong. Very weak..... But pine often is not strong at that height albeit stronger than cedar. Often laminated poles are used in applications where the poles are under constant stress. Thirty grand for some.

    Where is stat man stan?

That cedar pole is probably old enough and weathered to where even if it was treated, it has dried rotted. The perforation does not help. Once one went, it turned into a parachute.
