My 12 year old son says he wants to shoot trap seriously. Of course he said he wanted to play the trumpet too. The horn is in the basement. I hope I never hear it again. What gun can I get him for around 1500? He is not interested in shooting doubles. Thanks in advance.
Chuck, Hide that damn horn. The gun only makes noise on the weekends. At 1500 you can get a Browning BT99 new. You won't lose much on the investment. They seem to never break and all gunsmiths work on them. If you were in OH I would go to Dawson's. Pat McCarthy is excellent at fitting a gun.
I wish my dad would have bought me a BT when I was a teen. Best bang for the buck under 2k. jmho The Sportsmens Den had some great prices on Brownings at the Cardinal Center Shoots. I have never been to their shop but I hear it is close to Marengo.
The difference between horn blowing and trap is that trap is addictive. BT-99 and make sure it fits him so it don`t beat him up. 7/8oz loads to start. Fast and very little recoil.
Chuck: It's true that BT99s give fantastic bang for the buck. When my boys were starting out, however, a fixed-breech shotgun kicked a bit too hard and was difficult to hold up for a 100 bird event (they barely weighed 100 pounds). If your son is still small, search around for a Beretta 3901 Target RL. It is likely the most coveted youth trap gun in existence for really young shooters. It has a youth stock w/ adjustable parallel trap comb and adjustable LOP, a 28" bbl and it soaks up recoil like nobody's business. Really nice ones sell for $850-$975 (more than they cost new) and they retain their value well. Your boy will be able to increase the LOP as he gets bigger and will be able to focus on fundamentals and fun instead of worrying about recoil or struggling to hold up the gun. The Target RL is also more reliable and less finicky about being kept clean that other semi-autos like the Remington 1100. -Gary
He is not interested in shooting doubles YET....... hmmmmmmmm oh he will be after he has so much fun on singles.... Kids always love a challenge... hahaha good luck.. been there done that when i started my daughter..... Have fun and enjoy!@
I think you can find a used Browning XT o/u for $1500, I would do a search on line at Dawsonenterprises.com, Indiana Gun Club, Joel Etchens, Terry Jones, Terry's Gun Vault, has a new web site, High Grade Shooters Supply, Jaquas Fine Guns, These fine shops may have what you want. Dr.longshot
How 'bout a Browning Citori trap, MC stock, 32" O/U Invector chokes, original and in outstanding condition. $1,350 delivered!
I bought 2 of the new Winchester SXP trap compact for teaching kids at the club. They are a pump gun with a 13 inch lenght of pull. 400 each. Nice guns for the money. Good way for the kids to get started with out spending a lot on a gun. Ed Drumheller
I also have a SXP Trap with the 32 inch barrel. There not a high volume gun but it does break birds. About 2500 rounds down the pipe now and not one issue. Good gun for the money.
I would suggest a Remington 1100 Competition with the "BumpBuster" stock. Soft shooting so he does not develop a flinch and they look cool http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model-1100/model-1100-competition-synthetic.aspx
Hi Chuck ... I have just posted a Trap Gun in your price range. Check it out and give me a call if you are interested. Regards ... Storeman 913-491-0366 Sold as of Today 01/12/15 @ 10:30 ...ATTACH=full]127[/ATTACH]
As it turns out I forgot that my 1100 requires a Magnum Load for Goose Hunting and will not cycle normal trap loads. Sorry for the oversight.
