Couldn't get enough people to work the shoot Friday. Making them only run the A and B traps. They didn't have enough workers for that either. Shooter were filling traps and scoring as needed. Event 1 with only 2 traps per bank took so long they had to cancel event 2. Saturday and Sunday ran smoothly. Payouts took a week to mail out because of a post office issue.
I would have helped if I knew it was going on, I was wanting to go to Missouri Handicap but things did not happen, it is going on now isn't it? GB.......................................DLS
while this is all a bit of old news ... friday at westy hogans was a fiasco. how does shoot management not have enough help to run what's one of the larger shoots in the country? and ... my understanding is this is how it goes every year so not as if they were caught off guard. like a lot of folks i traveled a couple of hundred miles, booked hotels and took the day off work to attend. it's one thing to show up at local club and have it be understaffed or just not enough traps to handle a big crowd but isn't elysburg one of the largest facilities in the country? i'd like to think it's simply mismanagement but the way it went down it really feels like they just don't give a damn. shame on the pssa.
If they use local kids, I would imagine they are back in school. Friday being the problem day, with Saturday and Sunday running smoothly, I am only guessing that was the problem. Summer shoots are summer jobs for the kids.
I'm sure all Friday's complainers volunteered their services and helped with scoring. That said, with unemployment at an all-time low, finding TRAINED scorekeepers to work one day is a nightmare at best. Wouldn't it be interesting if Skip hired a few bums from the surrounding cities? Even if they showed up for work (which is unlikely) they probably wouldn't know the difference between a Glock and a K-80. I can't even imagine what their scoring targets might be like. Maybe it's time to make the Hogan a two day event or shorten Friday's program considerably. I see no other reasonable solution.
Our home based "think tank" decided a single Friday 200 target Handicap event with limited entries might be something that needs consideration. That gives PA some much needed income and should be easily handled with a limited number of traps. Something to think about!
Back in the day @ the golden west they would buss in the people from the local mission. This was when puller and setters had to actually pull & set. They would pull for half the day and then switch with the setters for the second half. Honest shooters had no problems.
I remember shooting the Hogan in Thurmont when we shot 200 caps & 200 singles on Friday with no problems.
They hire kids from the local highschool/college. In past years the schools let the kids take off to work the shoot. About 90% of the kids would still work the shoot and the rest would be fill in by volunteers (normally paid with target vouchers.) This year the schools didn't let the kids have off. I don't know when the pssa knew about not having the kids but I hope they do better for next year.
There are no local missions near Elysburg. Maybe suggesting the school district offer students the opportunity to work off some of their community service time by volunteering their services to pull might work.
Butch, I know you're getting old but are your sure of your recollection of those events? That said, been sniffing too much of that coyote lure lately? Heck, I even shot that shoot at Atlantic City one year and don't remember it.
Maybe it was only 100 caps followed by 200 singles. I do know that I broke the singles and after 8 years of no 200s I had three that month. Hogans, Western Grand & NE Grand.
That's more like it, but comparing MD to any other venue isn't fair. Heck, even I broke 200 there once. MD is the only place I had someone on the next trap break my target after I missed it clean. Those old Remington targets were a joy to see break.
I shot the Westy when it was shot in Atlantic City like the Dawg was saying . They had a Calcutta Sat. after the singles , they had a roast beef on a spit that must have weighed 30 lbs , all the beer, soda, hard liquor you wanted , all for free . People are still talking about it , all for the shooters . Industry cared back then .
