Blackjack Sporting Clays in Sumterville, will be shooting trap & skeet in the very near future--they have close to 4000 acres and are running a world class operation--they expect to have trap & skeet i operation by the end of Oct They will fill a void--good luck to them
OMG, THAT is a welcomed news !!! I wrote to them about a month ago and asked IF they would possibly be installing at least one combination trap and skeet field for us who don't shoot Sporting... I never got a response, but this is great news from you ! Keep us posted Phil !
Its going to happen 2 trap fields with BRB voice releases, a combo field with a pat trap wobble the trap will use BRB the trap fields will all be pat traps, also th e skeet houses will be wood to lessen the echo-that is prevalent in block skeet houses Now they're going with my recommendation for BRB's , shooters I know have had trouble with ERADS, they said BRB's ar bullet proof- They will be putting in lots of trailer hookups-- black water dump is still a ?--the club is real close to exit 321 on IS 75 Fri nights shooting under the lights , followed by a steak dinner-- a real class act--Thank God--been roughing it too long !!! Also: mega room for expansion ,Silver $ --your monopoly is no longer sacred
Another ? what is the biggest dimension that a trap house can be-I was told the CC really pushed the limits--my rule book is a 2014--was told the dimensions have changed
Here ya go Phil, straight out of the ATA rule book effective 9-1-2019 https://shootata.com/Portals/0/pdf/ata_rulebook_web.pdf B. TRAPHOUSES Traphouses must adequately protect the trap loaders and shall not be higher than necessary for that purpose. It is recommended that traphouses constructed after September 1, 2003 shall conform to the following specifications: 1. Length not less than 7 feet, 6 inches, nor more than 9 feet, 6 inches. 2. Width not less than 7 feet, 6 inches, nor more than 9 feet, 6 inches. 3. Height not less than 2 feet, 2 inches, nor more than 3 feet, 0 inches, the height to be measured from the plane of the number 3 shooting position. It is recommended that the throwing surface (throwing arm or plate) of the trap machine be on the same level as that of Post 3 and the target height setting pad. C. POSTS The posts shall be 3 yards apart on the circumference of a circle whose radius is 16 yards. Handicap posts, when used, shall be prolongations of the lines given in Diagram I (p. 55), commonly known as fan shaped. The distance between posts at 16-yards shall then be 3 yards. I just spoke with the gal at BlackJack, and what a welcome thing this will be. Tom's got a little too far, and since I am no longer shooting ATA, this will be so much more enjoyable, and a nice ride at that.
Tom wants to be a beach bum and a cruise dude-- running a business is in the back burner, hope I'm wrong but I give RR 2 years @ the most
You used to be one of his largest supporters. My LAST ATA event that went all wrong at RR was when I got tied up in traffic on 75, and got to the club at 11:30 AM, and Tom wouldn't let me sign up even for Caps which had not even started yet. His program stated signup until 1:00PM, and when I asked about that, his reply was "I want to get out of here early today., you can go and shoot practice now if you like" I told him, thanks but for 8 bucks a practice round, I would rather drive back 50 miles from where I came from and take my wife to dinner...That was almost 3 years ago, and I have never set foot back there. Sorry to hear things are not going well over there even now. It was sort of going down hill back then, and I understand worse now.
Hey PM me , like to chat--was responsible for RR getting ERADS, he letting the place fall apart-very discouraging
I suggested Floridas Ancient Oaks Sporting Clays put in two trap fields to toss more targets. They didnt and closed. Targets in the air equa
My daughter who lives near the Villages said there was a new club there. I don't know if it has Trap.
BAMA, It may be Blackjack that 635 G is referring to. Taking a ride there today to get more information and take a look around. My sporting friends tell me I won't be disappointed. I can only shoot trap now, and this will be VERY welcomed to folks like me.
Just got back from taking a trip to Blackjack. Quick and lovely 20 mile ride. VERY nice facility, and a great gal behind the counter gave us all the info we could have asked for. Certainly looking forward to joining this club, and shooting Trap there. Nothing in this area can compare.
They have close to 4000 acres, to play with--if they decide to get in high gear--combined with their proximity to The Villages which has 60K new houses on the drawing board--they might be able to become the premier trap facility in Fl/ and the south
Phil, I can tell you that The Villages Air Gun ranges are gaining attendance in leaps and bounds. My hope is some of these people who are enjoying these shooting sports will want to try our shotgun sports also. We will need to get this new trap and skeet facility out to our local press as things progress.
Its a shame The Villages developers kids weren't in to clay target sports--the Silver Dollar would have been history a long time ago--we got polo fields instead
With hat new acquisition of the 8,000+ acres, it's funny they couldn't put in some Shotgun sports fields. We came back up 501, and could not believe The Villages has their property all the way down there. From the northern boundary, to that corner at 501 is over 25 miles long. Still amazes me that when we go into any one of the villages, it's like going into a Small community. Yep, and an additional 65,000 homes...Orlando, here we come ! LOL
Worked very good for NY several years ago...LOL YOU should have seen that. One girl scored the first 5 shots of each shooter completely across the first shooters line. Some laid on the ground scoring, and couldn't see the targets so would ask "Did he hit that one, the guy is standing in my way. I have to imagine they have hired better scorers by now with a new Delegate and President. Trust me, I was on one of those squads.
Just got a message , video attachment from the mgr/owner--machinery is current clearing & grading the new fields--its going to happen
Sage Hill use to hire bums and drunks out of jail and off the street in Reno. You should have seen some of those Clowns.
Bob Taylor did that 25 years ago. That is nothing new. Sage Hill is just imitating what Bob did. Roger C.
Bama, I shot their first 10 shoots. I was there at the first shoot when they were ask about tables and chairs for the shooters to sit at while they ate. The answer was let them sit on the floor. Was not a popular response. Roger C.
Well, they had tables and chairs when I was there. I shot there in the '80s with 200+ squads at the Golden Grand.
You missed all of the rattle snakes then. The first shoot I counted 17 DEAD ON THE ROAD GOING INTO THE CLUB. On the first trap up on the hill one crawled across a ladies foot when she was on post one. She almost crapped her pants. When we were shooting on the last trap at the bottom of the hill, in the middle of the round the setter flew out of the house, He screamed that a rattler crawled in the house with him, when he could no longer see it he bailed. They were also letting the west coast hot shots shoot in front of the club house on every event. That was when you signed on to a squad you had the same squad number and post for the whole shoot. I liked the Little Mondo club more then Sage Hill. Roger C.
Phil, I didn't make it down to BJ this weekend. Have you got any new news to report on the Trap field ?
Per the Fl ATA delegate, only one field is required to hold an ATA registered shoot, didn't like what I heard at TV club meeting--better have @ least 2 fields or its not going to fly for registered shoots-@ least he's got an open mind, not like the employees @ the $$$ may drop by this Thurs to see what's going on @ BJ--going to Alabama this weekend--hope my arthwrongis holds up, if it does I hope together a couple of punches
Will start pouring concrete next week, Tom & the office staff @ RR are taking another cruise next week, taking off in the heart of snowbird season--oh well--how to kill a business in no time, almost all of the Villagers are no longer shooting @ RR
When and if the trap and skeet fields get into operation at Blackjack, that should take most, if not all that portion of Tom's business with TV away. Looking forward to the opening ! From the two visits I had at Blackjack, that place is First Class.
Dropped by the club today, the work on the trap-combo is getting into gear, will be pouring concrete next week
progress report, the field should be done in a few weeks, will get a shot-curtain--the owners are not penny pinchers--it will be first class--if they decide , that trap is a viable business asset-- Silver $$--you better watch out--6 minutes off of I-75--to a world class venue
Very good chance of putting in shot-curtains, like the CC--again, not a penny pincher--by the way my old auto-loader(DeVault 391) is getting into high gear
Hope they get these fields in soon. Eustis GC, with SOUTH facing fields can't hold a candle to this fine place, and I refuse to go to Robinson Ranch any more. The guys shooting Eustis were really nice, but OMG, that background and south facing into the sun was "Almost" unbearable. When they only get 4 to 5 shooters for trap on a Saturday, you can judge that for yourselves. Will be dropping Eustis membership when these NEW fields are in operation. Indeed, by all means Blackjack is First Class.
I'll be down in that area about a month from now for about a month. May have to cruise over there and check it out.
