I would like to see target requirements for the GAH at 1500 in the last two years and a minimum of 500 each year.
If I recall, when I joined ATA (1974) it was 500 per year. Lot of guys got dis-interested when they raised it to 1000. Regards.....Gerald
That won't help. The number of shooters actually shooting EVENT 24 will still SUCK. You should be on that "committee". If you aren't already that is!
I Think 1000 In The Current And Previous Year With A Minimum Of 500 Shot In The Current Year Would Be Acceptable If They're Trying To Get Joe Lunch Pail To Attend There Again.
Then that committee could figure out how to get all those joe lunch pail shooters to move to within 3-5 hours of that outpost And remember, the foreigner AKA mikej said the ata didn't need any of those POOR types You know, the ones that go to casinos instead of shooting "registered" targets.
Sid I don't think it matters at all, they should just do away with target requirements. I agree it is location that is the problem.
" I don't think it matters at all, they should just do away with target requirements." You are probably right. That way even someone that has NEVER been there, like this guy, can go shoot. Less than 9000 LIFE TIME but he could still go and compete against the "big dogs".
I was against raising target requirements, it was the big dogs back then, that wanted it changed, 500 each was the Old rule, 1500 total targets for a PERMANENT CARD, 500 per year in the category you wanted to compete in at the GAH. If it Ain't Broke why try to fix it? GB.............................................DLS
I guess one way to increase attendance at the Grand would be to just let anyone join the ATA and begin shooting right at the GRAND, like we can at any other shoot. I'll bet they would actually see some more come out and play. Restricting people isn't helping their cause at all in my opinion.
If I remember correctly, target requirements when I went to the Grand in Vandalia were - a total of 2,000 targets in the current and previous 2 years, with at least 500 of them shot in the current year.
The ATA has created a cesspool of muck for shooters and then they wonder why the attendance of the biggest little trap shoot in the world has fallen (and can't get up) to the levels of some of the bigger State and or zone shoots ... If the shooters were given adequate notice and the shoot was moved to a more favorable location the attendance would increase drastically ... The problem is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results just ain't gonna happen ... If they had their chance and didn't take it they are FOOLS and deserve what ever they get, and everyone see'e what it is and its PATHETIC ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
We tried taking out the 500 "current year" requirement last year and it was overwhelmingly voted back in by the PA ATA Clubs. They felt without the 500 current year targets, people would no longer need to shoot anywhere but the larger tournaments to retain their qualifications. We had done it to try and help the shooters who struggled to get targets. Also we did raise the overall minimums to 1500/1500/1000 for all our events to help offset the current year, but the clubs saw it differently.
Interesting and overlooked point made by DEDPAIR. It is not the ATA members that vote on a lot of the issues. Often they cannot vote on any. What if you are not a member of a club in PA? It is the club representative voting. The club representative might not even shoot trap. He might have a conflict and prefer archery in his club. Also, what is good for club A is not always good for the ATA. Remember, we changed the handicapping system because Mississippi cant get 20 people to a shoot. How did Skip vote on that one? Is that still kept secret?
The Target requirements for a Permanent Card, should be REVERTED to the 1968 Target rules, and NEVER,EVER BE CHANGED. GB............................................DLS
You can BUY ATA legal shells 1 1/8th oz 7.5s @1290fps, look who's shooting them. You can see empty boxes with #6 shot at the cardinal trash Bbls, and empty hulls on the ground. These are the economy shells. GB..................................DLS
If I recall, when you shoot the required amount of reg. hcp. targets you get a new card with your assigned yardage. If you want to shoot the GA and you don't have enough targets you must shoot penalty 25 yds. In 1974 new shooters were assigned 22yds.
I don't think so. I don't think he cares much about sparta anymore. seems to have more interest in sporting clays by the look of it. Lots of parasites on the other site that don't seem to have a life and lots of spare time.
It was to point out that Neil Winston promoted ILLEAGAL SHELLS FOR ATA TOP DOGS, the above shell post was to point out how the ATA is being run today. You don't remember A TEMPORARY CARD? AND A PERMANENT CARD TARGET REQUIREMENTS? YOU must be a newbie. I am 79 yrs old and those target Requirements are TATOOED in my brain. It was an honor to me to get my permanent card, And then my LIFE MEMBER CARD. I am trapshooting Proud, but not ATA Proud, Especially the Neil Winston Era, He is/was one of the EC that SCREWED UP THE ATA. GB...................................DLS
He isn't the only one that doesn't care about that place. From the pathetic numbers they draw I would say him and about 2,000 other people. As far as Sporting Clays events go, look how many that outpost had for their latest event, the "Pro matic Classic" at sparta. The WORLD shooting AND recreational complex. 24 entries TOTAL Damn, almost 5 full squads. Maybe this guy should have gone there. THAT would have put them over the top.LMAO The place itself should be called the "classic". As in classic miscalculation and blunder. Looks like they need a committee to try and convince people to go there for that too. On a side note, the National Sporting Championships already have 1,992 pre registered for San Antonio. A few more than that "fantastic" 1,978 the ata could snag for their "grand" in BFE. I don't understand it. All those ata shooters compared to the number of Sporting shooters, and the ata draws less.
Next year the Sumter County in Florida is proposing to give some MAJOR money to the Blackjack Sporting Clays for hosting 2 major events. I saw this in their proposed 25% increase tax proposal. When I asked about it, they told me it comes out of the Tourism portion of Taxes on the hotel and motels, not our Property taxes. Something like a total of $75,000.00 in 2020, $50,000.00 for one of the events and $25,000.00 for another. That being said, Sporting Clays must be drawing enough interest for Municipalities to support their shoots.

History seeker, Get a program and find out how much it would cost to shoot the shoot for all targets and purses. It is not a cheap sport. At the shoot in Tucson last year I ask a board member how much to shoot the total shoot. His answer was between $3000. and $4000. I was surprised at the answer. Roger C.
The REAL VANDALIA Grand American paid a Hell of a lot more than the above Florida SC event, That's when we had DEDICATED Personnell running the biggest and best shoot in the WORLD. Do I get a YEAH,YEAH? GB....................................DLS
That is true Gary if you hit the events just right you would come out of there with a small fortune (at the time ) , and be able to pay for a lot of shooting besides a few really good steak dinners ... I shot borderline good scores and won over $6,000 between the grand (when it was the Grand ) and Tipp City ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
Doc. Do you remember when the first time you seen (high gun) on a HANDICAP OPTION?When the average shooter figured out what that meant they quit playing percentage options. I think it helped run off a lot of shooters. Roger C.
I am certainly sure this will not be a cheap shoot. With all the talk about no money in trap shooting going on, I figured some may want to give this a go... We all know Some of those clays guys are like Flyer Fellows...No problem with entry monies. I'll get a program as soon as I can find out about them.
The time to make some major changes to attract more shooters (customers) was more then 10 years ago when they re located to Illinois ... The first year at the WSRC would and should of been a "try" year, then possibly another year or two if they are stubborn and or stupid to make sure it was not a fluke, then it was time to move on ... They can reduce target requirements, increase shot pay loads, make targets bigger, pour concrete, and just about anything else you can think of and it is proven it is not going to work based on location, location, location ... If the ATA gets or has a chance to move the grand it should be done post haste without hesitation for the preservation and good of the sport ... This site has some very knowledgeable people ( shooters) and the ATA has some talent still in the membership that should not go to waste or be ignored any longer ... Get the hell rid of Lynn (The Talking Head ) Gipson at any cost and take your lumps, let him take it to court and he will probably die before it would be settled at the rate the courts are going ... Eliminate all target requirements and let the chips fall where they may ... That should attract some new blood and give the big dogs something to contend with on many levels ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
Roger, you were right, I Objected to ALL HI GUN LEWIS's, 1st place usually took all 3 LEWIS classes top class. It was like CHEATING, I have never ever played a HIGH GUN LEWIS. I have a Calculator in my head, HI GUN= Stealing from the average shooters. GB...................................DLS
