Shot the Model 12 today, There is something about that gun, it swings and points very well. Are there any other Model 12 people here?
The Silver Seitz to me feels like a Model 12, I love the Model 12, That Feel, nothing like one. I started w/one in 1968 broke a 100 from 24.5 yards w/one. Solid Rib Trap.
I like Model 12's, shot them for years ... Thats what put me on the 27 yardline and I am sorry I ever quit shooting a Model 12, could of saved a lot of money I spent on other guns over the years ... I have one safe for the Model 12's they don't play nice with others ... wpt ... (yac) ...
I like the way they look and what they meant to the old time trap shooter, but they nock the sh--out of me!
They can kick pretty hard if the don't fit the shooter, I guess I'm luck at 5'7" the gun is a joy to shoot at targets.
I always wanted a 32"inch Model 12, Bueford Baily I believe if my memory serves me right shot a 32" inch one, now there was a man who could shoot one.
Gary, I've got a 32 inch build-up made in 1942 that has a beautiful full choke in it. The thing crushes targets when you point it right. No recoil issues with this gun.
That's what my 32 inch is. I built it myself from a nice 32 inch full choke field gun 25 years ago. It crushes targets.
I have always wanted one but I don't know what I'm looking at. I have heard of y models, 3 pin, 2 pin and now I'm seeing built up. Could someone explain these terms and what I should look for. Thanks Rick
I believe the original vent ribs were of the 2 pin variety, from about 1919 to maybe 1960. The 3 pin guns were built from around 1961 to 1964. The Y Traps are post 1964. ( I think the Y prefix was added after the GCA of 1968?) Built up Trap guns are usually field Model 12's with aftermarket ribs ( by Simmons, etc), and aftermarket stocks (or factory Trap stocks). There are other factory rib types in addition to these.
I use to shoot one then went to a break open. We have one guy at the home club that shoots a 12. He also has a bunch of them. I get out my 1897 once in awhile to shoot, but it's a kicker.
I have 2. The older one is from 1929. A older Gentlemen that was a wood worker made the stock. Very nice. The other one is from the 50s. They both shoot real nice. Have not used them since last winter. I would also like to fine a early model like your 1897. Seen one at Cabelas in Hamburg Pa but past it up. Went back the next week to get it and it was gone. Ed
Just a thought Rick, There are 2 books that I have found helpful when it comes to Model 12's. One is: "The Winchester Model 12", by George Madis. And the next one is:"The Greatest Hammerless Repeating Shotgun Ever Built", By Dave Riffle. The second book is particularly informative, in that it has many color photos to view, and it is bigger than the first. There are some differences between the two books when it comes to serial number dating, and I can't really say which one is absolutely correct in that regard. I shot my round post, donut base gun at Downers Grove today, and had a fine time.
I just won a "New in Box" Win Model 12 y. SS#Y2005256, looks to be made in 1973. Just put it together, seams to be a new virson of my 1897. Will shoot it this weekend. Want to be fan of the "12". Carry On
Why not sell the unfired Model 12, and buy a used "Y" Trap? If you are just looking for a Model 12 to shoot, you would probably be money ahead.
The Modal 12 that I have is a "Y" Trap. Monto-Carlo stock, vent rib and fine wood. That's what I am so happy about. Love shoting Side-By-Sides and Pump guns. Carry On
Shot a "Y" until forced to shoot a release trigger (flinch). If they made a release that a lefty could reset when neeeded I'd still be shooting it.
They are all I shoot. Have several. A couple pigeon grade, a 2-pin, 3-pin, and y-model. Alot of people complain about recoil. I tell them damn it, it's a 12 gauge shotgun. It is supposed to kick.
Here' a couple pics of my old squirrel gun, before and after a tad of embellishment done by Howard Simon for me. Lotsa birds and squirrels fell in front of this old gun for me. Quite a lot of claybirds went to smokesville too! Won a lot of trophies with this old 1928 nickel steel plain barrel gun. Made it to the max yardage with it as it is in the first pic. This is the gun I'll shoot my last registered ATA targets with then give it to my grandson. HAP
FG, just wanted to pretty up the old squirrel gun a little before passing it along to my grandson. I recall hearing others pass by the 27 on the sidewalks and exclaim, lookie there, thet guys gun doesn't even have a rib!! That's why today I wear plugs and good muffs when I shoot. HAP
I heard there is a left hand prototype somewhere. My Mod 12 is a 1 of 5 engraved Bicentennial made in 76'. It had been fired and I shot ATA with it for a year. I developed my first flinch with that gun. Sent it to Stu Wright 2 years ago to go thru it. He did a beautiful job. I'm sorry to hear he is now ill.
jmunsell, give Howard Simon a call. He's the most reasonable engraver around. Does a great job too! (815) 478-4966 He will even take thingies on trade also!! HAP
thnks hap. will have jeannie send you some pics. of uncle larrys mdl. 12 engraving project. its my take off of a gino cardnell design thnks howard
