NY Style targets should be thrown for every trapshooting event, especially if transition from land/trees to sky background is in play. After receiving info from AverageEd from the Penn. State shoot showing the affect it had on scores, a local club league threw some without notifying the shooters. Their scores jumped up on average. After they where notified of this, the nay sayers were pissy and wanted them changed back to all orange claiming they can not see them as well, even though their averages went higher. Their claim was it made the targets look brown. If a florescent orange target with a lower black rim looks brown, I can assure you an all florescent orange target in the same exact conditions will look just as brown if not more. Shows you how much this is all psychological.
There was a time when I used to shoot a considerable amount of targets, never once did the thought cross my mind that I had the right to dictate to any club manager or staff as to the color of targets I wanted and they should throw so and so targets, no matter what my preference was ... Most clubs get opinions of their members, the local shooters, board of directors, and go from there rather than call Canada or any other clubs and ask them what they want ... I do not recall asking anyone what color targets they were going to use at any particular shoot before I went there ... If I went to a shoot and did not like something about it I would not go back, I think the excuse of all orange, all black, all green, or black rimmed targets is getting a little old and worn out ... I shot to have fun and enjoy myself, be dammed if I was going to let the color of the targets ruin that ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
USUALLY THE SHOOTERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE COLOR OF THE TARGETS CAN NOT HIT THEIR OWN ASSES WITH BOTH HANDS ANYWAY. Same as those that whine about the target manufacturer. If you hit it it will break, or your shells are no good. I shot with all Americans my whole life, and never heard them complain about the targets. Roger C.
So maybe that's the reason PA turnouts have dropped around 35% in 10 years-black rimmed targets. In the sky they're great-in a tree background they suck. The very best targets ever thrown were the fluorescent all-orange Remingtons many years ago. Unfortunately, today's automatic traps would never handle 'em without significant breakage.
I would bet the reason why is all trapshooting has dropped in the last 10 years. I can't see why trapshooters would stop attending if there where more straights, and very good scores shot. Unless maybe they just gave up. Solid color targets came after the black rims didn't they? I know they did around here. All ATA targets I know of around here are black rims. Should have never offered the solid colors, IMO. More crap to bitch about. Even though you think you do not see that black rim with a treed background, you do. There are no areas that are pitch black in the background no matter what that is, and that black rim will stand out. They suck because you want them to. Concentrate on the orange, and let the psychological chit go. The first complaint is the target looks smaller. That fact is, they are the same size. Also, the black will never disappear or change, while the florescent colors entering a brighter background will diminish and change in contrast. Black is black, no matter if colorblind or not. Here again is my rendition of art. Against those screens, there is no doubt that black rim will show.
Stl Flyn, I never said they would not show better, I said I never recall asking any club I ever shot at what type, color targets they used nor would I pitch a bitch if they didn't give me ( the paying customer ) what I wanted … I have found over the course of my life time people are more than HAPPY to tell you what to do and how your screwing up but they would not lift a finger to lend a hand or get involved to the point where they might even have a say so on the color of targets … People can make their demonstrations to prove their point or graphs to convince others what they should do or way to let them know what you want … Maybe the all orange would increase the difficulty factor at the big shots to the point where all the Big Dogs are not as good as they usually seem to be or maybe not ..? WPT … (YAC) …
The problems began with to many options. That alone with trap shooters minds causes a problem. You will never make everyone happy. The more options, the more differing preferences you will have. I am not telling any club to throw any particular targets, as I know the backgrounds vary from club to club, and even season to season. Switching targets through the year to account for light, foliage, etc., don't make sense either. Also, some clubs have different clay sports to shoot, and one color type is really an only option. What I am saying is the better target for all around vision, would be the original dome colored target with a NY style black rim. This target still has plenty of color available on the face of the target, but yet has the lower outer rim only, black. This contrast in color on the target allows our eyes to focus on the target better when transitioning through different backgrounds, and light variances. It defines the target better, instead of a blurred blob or streak. I shoot targets of all kinds, at many different clubs. Most of those are all orange, and they will not change simply because when they shoot their leagues, the sun is behind them or under the lights and it is what they want. The club I am going to today throws all orange for most their money shoots also. Today is their green bird shoot which makes it even worse. Faces straight east. Sunny today with some hazy clouds, so the big dogs won't show up until 1:00 or so. Reason being is the sun is above or starting to get behind the shooters. Any time before that those targets get above the arborvitae line, they disappear into the skyline/glare right when you pull the trigger. This also causes the wait times to get past an hour or more after sign up. As I say, people will still be there starting at 10:00 shooting into that sun rise, but it is really hard to shoot what you can not see. Now, green with black NY style rims would be perfect for this situation, IMO. I don't think that is an option, yet. I guess it is not any different than choosing banks to shoot on with different preferred backgrounds. Added a few birds in the tree line.
The all orange target was developed so small clubs that throw night birds and skeet would not have to stock white and orange birds. It was better for the clubs and the dealers, not so good for the customers. I ask the owner of White flyer why they used different paint on the domed targets than they do on the all orange. His answer was I don't know. That was 25 years ago and they still used different paint. Roger C.
People like to create things (stumbling blocks) so they can play mind games with them self otherwise known as excuses … Personally, I do not have any preference, I can miss any of them … Now, I will have an excuse as to why … WPT … (YAC) …
One of my favorite clubs faces South with a nearly solid tree background. Over the last 55 years I've shot there we've thrown every conceivable color combination possible. That includes, black and white, yellow and black, all white, all orange, all green and black and orange. A number of years back we alternated league days with all orange and all green. All green produced 2x as many perfect scores under identical conditions. Black and orange produced the worst scores and were the least visible. Those of us who were shooting for decades might remember those all-orange targets from Remington that actually glowed in the dark. Now that was a target.
Oleolliedawg. That target was most likely made in Findley, Ohio. They had the ideal mixture of materials at that location. The next best was the all black old eclipse, with no paint.made in Calif. Roger C.
the all fluorescent green were the best targets to see under the lights. we threw those at our club for 1 winter. and our attendance and league scores were all up. then unfortunately we could no longer get them. I believe they were white flyer targets.
I have a strong dislike for all (insert) color targets thrown into a mother nature background. However, I suspect all orange, green or pink will be fine against the new background provided by the new curtains.
I ask if the targets would always stay in the screen back ground. No answer as of yet. The most visable target against the screen will disappear if it goes into the sky Check the all green in the above picture. The black rim give it definition. Roger C.
I'll wait for the pictures of a real target in the air thank you. I know you are trying to show the color difference but the SIZE of thje targets in the pic kinda makes me want to wait to decide what would be better. Now, if that is the new size they are going to throw then it probably won't matter much what color.
If the target transitions from the curtain to the sky; the background cure for the buildings may be worse than the bank advantage disease. The target needs to stay in the curtain.
I'm not there but I would be willing to bet a buck that the guys that figured out where to put the poles and curtains just might have thought of that.
At some clubs I have shot at they would need two more layers at the top to keep the targets from breaking into the sky line. On windy days it may be a real problem. Roger C.
Flyersbest, If they used 10 ft. as the max. height for the targets they may have erred. There are not many clubs honoring that height rule, and the ATA does not enforce it. The state delegate is supposed to enforce the rules in their state, but I would bet none ever do. The whole concept of registered shooting has fallen by the way side, it is now just a financial cookie jar for the EC. Roger C.
Great news. Solid orange is a great target for daytime shooting. The magenta ones used for the cancer shoots are fabulous.
I put this on another thread, but here is a picture of a target in flight from the 16 at practice trap 3 I took last night while my son was shooting. There was a breeze from NW that would push a left hand target above the screen, but only after a miss. Can’t attest to doubles yet.
The club in Casa Grand throws green targets, made by White Flyer. I'm not sure if they are black rimes or not. Roger C.
Oldest son shot a round of doubles on practice trap 1 last night. No trouble with targets rising above screen. Now with the way the grounds fluctuate in height beyond the traps, who knows what will happen from end to end. I can tell you that with the small valley that runs along trap 4D, those people that shoot on that bank will not have any problems with targets flying above the screen, but maybe picking them up from the house before they rise to the screen. We shall see.
James, were those targets black rimmed, or all orange? Hard to tell from a picture, but that target is not jumping out as easy to see. I see it is orange though, and it is aligned with a dark seam. I would bet that green would be very easy to see, especially on that day, that is until it rose above the curtain if it would get that high.
They are using solid orange targets at all the traps now, including practice. The picture really doesn't do justice. Those targets are quite easy to see when they come out.
You don't see any targets in the background above the curtain. The problem I have is the targets on banks 2, 3, 4. They start in the usual background then into the screen. I was told (rumor) that they will later add additional curtain on the bottom?
