An Illinois gun bill could force buyers of guns to give up their passwords to this forum and other social media.

If this passes (sure it will) the state will need extra time to check how you have used your first amendment rights. Passwords will be kept to recheck.

If someone would have just warned the EC about Illinois before they moved from Ohio none of this would have mattered.

I wonder how much kick back money helped the bad decision? Sure wish it was in our right to know area.
Someone fell for the bullshit of; build it and they will come.
If the E.C. and BOD were terminated, and Tucson added 45 traps they with a new E.C. and BOD could hold the Grand, and tell the ATA we will run the shoot, you may come at your own expense. You are all volunteers now. We should be so lucky. Roger C.

I am confident none of our moderators or techies would put themselves in a position of having to give out their passwords. A mod giving up his password could destroy a forum.

I get Just Joe’s implied point. The forum mods here won’t be buying guns in NY or Illinois. There is another group of mods that swoon over that place.

The EC and BOD that was in place when the idea to move to Sparta, Ill came up should have plaques made with their name on them and they be fastened to the Main building, the HOF building and various traps houses like "Head Stones" to remind everyone who instigated the move ... Then for each time there is a change a new set made and installed on the Main building, the HOF, and various traps houses to remind the members who did not make a move or initiate getting relocated to some other place, any other place ... Just a nice little reminder so no one forgets ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Headstones usually have dates of birth and death.

On any plaques put up at that place in IL. the dates would be the same.

Please quote exactly where there is a law asking citizens to give up their *passwords* to the social media accounts. I strongly believe this stated requirement is incorrect.

  22. Don Cogan

    Jumanji,
It is not a requirement at this time. There is bill making its way through the Illinois legislature at this time that would require gun purchasers in the state of Illinois to provide such information. This bill has not been signed into Illinois law at this time. The OP did phrase the post as a "bill that could" require such info.

Did you read Rickyd post? You wouldn’t look quite so silly. Pritzker has already said he will sign it. Fox News interviewed one of the authors. Stay off CNN and read a few more posts here. It will be the police that does the background/media checks. A cop might already think you have a mental illness.

I read Rickyd's post, which is incorrect but don't let that stop you from believing it.

I also read the actual law, which apparently you did not or you wouldn't quote inaccurate information or try to insult people who actually know what they are talking about.

For your review here is the actual text of the law (IL HB0888):

    The Department of
State Police shall conduct a search of the purchasers' social
media accounts available to the public to determine if there is
any information that would disqualify the person from obtaining
or require revocation of a currently valid Firearm Owner's
    Identification Card.

I know it is often difficult to share or repost accurate information on this site but I'd like you to point out where it says that a password must be shared?

The bill does *not* ask people to give up their social media passwords. Any reference to that as fact is patently incorrect.

    Jumanji,
    Thank you for the clarification.

From one of your earlier posts,
"You FUDers do realize that the law is asking for a *list* of your social media accounts, not your *passwords*. That's a pretty big distinction."

I do have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Would you please also clarify what a FUDer is?

The second questions is a two parter, isn't it nice that you don't have to have 50 posts to be able to sell something on this site and do you feel calling "potential" buyers FUDer's is a good business practice?

    Jumanji,
I've attached a link to an article that I read on the subject after seeing this thread. Believe me, I'm not looking to provoke you or get into a debate on the subject. Just trying to pass on some of the info that I found while researching the subject. Every State in the Union has some folks that are very anti-gun and would like to see all guns taken away from US citizens. Lets just hope they are never successful at that.

Actually you must consent to the search. That means you will have to comply with the search. You will not be permitted to hide the information. Social media’s such as FB require passwords to see anything. You can’t see pms here without a password. The author was interviewed on FOX. He could not answer how long they should keep the passwords. He did confirm state police would need them.

Happy you are here. Great to clarify that.

Are PM's available 'to the public' as clearly defined in the statue?

I don't agree with the law even a little bit but there is a clear distinction. A perfect comparison would be that the local tax assessor can ask where you live, can walk around your property, but they can't force you to turn over the keys to your house.

They aren't asking for passwords, won't be asking for passwords, and anything to the contrary is incorrect.

    Want factual information.....?

A bill introduced in the New York State Assembly would require residents to hand over social media passwords and internet search history before being granted permission to purchase a firearm.

The bill, drafted by state Senator Kevin Parker and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, would give state officials the ability to review up to three years worth of internet search history, reports WKBW Buffalo.

    https://www.sgtreport.com/2018/11/g...d-over-social-media-passwords-search-history/
    -------------------------------------------
    NY and IL same bills:

And Rebecca Glenberg of the Illinois ACLU added that the bill “doesn’t say anything about how that list may be retained and for how long and what uses it might be put to …" She worried that police could let their bias affect their decision, reflecting, "a person’s political beliefs, a person’s religious beliefs, things that should not play a part in whether someone gets a FOID card or not.”

    https://www.dailywire.com/news/43232/illinois-bill-would-permit-police-examine-gun-hank-berrien

    --------------------------------

The bill asks those applying for a gun license or renewing one to give up their log-ins and passwords to social media accounts for open searches going back three years; internet search histories would go back one year. The law would give state and local police the green light to investigate for "commonly known profane slurs used or biased language used to describe race, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, disability or sexual orientation; threatening health or safety of another person, or an act of terrorism."

I meant wasn't it nice that you can sell your guns on this site without having to put up 50 posts first. LIKE SOMEWHERE ELSE!

I would be willing to bet a buck that some of the potential buyers of the high grade stuff you have listed on this site might fit into your FUDers category.

But Richard Pearson of the Illinois State Rifle Association countered, “When people look at this everyone who has a Facebook account or email account or Twitter account will be incensed or should be."

I guess some people will care a great deal and to some, it won't really matter.

Doesn't bother me I don't go to Sparta or New York anymore, along with New Jersey, my old state of Maryland, California, Washington, and a couple other states. In the day I shot ATA in all of them but California and Washington. I did shoot PITA out there in the North West one year. I will not spend any money in anti gun states. Call it one man's boycott.

    Roger,
I do not think Tucson would need an additional 45 traps, probably more like 25 based on the fact the ATA has never utilized all of the trap fields in Illinois based on the reduced number in attendance to date ...( at least initially) ... If (probably would ) the attendance increased in the first few years there may be a need for more traps unless the club is land locked and does not have the room to expand ... (Page 2) , That time of the year in Arizona can be very warm which might keep some people away, not like it can't get extremely warm in Illinois that time of the year ... My crystal ball has not been working (probably got hacked ) so its any body's guess what might or could happen ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

None of the kool-ade drinkers go to the Grand. They only shoot in their home states. The only thing they give to Sparta is lip service and their version of the lemming parade. Roger C.
