You think you bought a gun in Illinois and it is not registered? Wrong!

You think you bought a gun in Illinois and you are not on a gun owners list? Wrong!

The seller must retain for 10 years a record of the transfer, including a description of the firearm (including serial number), the identity of the buyer, and the buyer’s FOID number.

    Bought it in Illinois

You are now on a gun owners list for 10 years! So is your gun.

Would you buy a gun that was originally sold in Illinois?
    Think about it.

My son won a BPS trap gun at a youth shoot at Rend Lake several years ago.
Had the gun shipped to our dealer in Missouri.
Had the gun about 3 weeks when we traded it in on a different gun.
Didn't need the BPS but did ok on the trade.
Is that BPS on the " list" since we never took possession or paid any money for it and never filled out any paperwork until it was in Missouri?

Probably doesn't matter since we don't have it anymore.

If an Illinois dealer had it, he had to record who got, and keep the records for the govt for 10 years.

I had an FFL when I lived in Illinois, anything to do with any gun that comes from or through Illinois goes on that registration that has to be maintained for 10 years, when i gave up my FFL I had to go and turn in all of my records ... The Feds were a dream to deal with compared to the State, and or county ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Form 4473 which is the form anyone fills out nationwide when buying a firearm from a dealer is maintained on file for 20 years by the dealer. If the dealer closes he forwards them to the ATF. It's not just Illinois.

So how does a gun sold face to face between Illinois residents get placed on the"list"?

It wouldn't, unless the buyer and seller had a dealer do the transfer between them.

That's what I was thinking also. I'm guessing that the op was trying to make a point but I sure can't figure out what it was.
    Wonder if he knows?
