Necrographers from the Illinois Department of Vital Statistics have been heartened by the precipitous drop in the deaths resulting from the bites of huge spiders in Sparta we all read online predictions about in 2006. However, the total lack of them in the last twelve years has had them worried – where have they all gone, and have they, as so often happens, just attracted their own new predator which is worse yet? Their worst fears have been realized. Now that the spiders have almost all been eaten, their nemesis, a hitherto unknown specie of enormous millipedes, has had to expand its prey to include humans, the most prevalent nearby source of high-quality protein. Living in the subterranean maze of sanitary sewers of the campgrounds, the wily polypeds have developed a strategy of emerging at night and entering campers by stealth. Little is heard but in the morning, when someone is late for a squad, this is commonly found: And in the camper remains little more than, in the words of a practically catatonic EMT, "bleached wetsuits." It just gets worse and worse. N1H1
That may be how the ATA counts "campers", so they can publish "15,000 campers in the campgrounds" ..... They count all the pooper-pipe legs as "camping" All Americans .....
There are 1001 camping spots at the WSRC and all are rented. Most have power, water, and sewer. There is parking access to all and emergency access as well. If there's, say, a fire a motorhome, a whole village of campers will not burn as they surely would have in camping area A in Vandalia with 230 campers in an area little bigger than a football field.. We never have to turn off our air conditioners to give the shooting line enough power, nor do our AC units burn out from low voltage. Compare that with the nightmare of camping and parking at Vandalia. Is there any question why we like it better here? N1H1
How appropriate for that place in IL. A picture of crap going down the drain. Is there any question why we like it better here? Well hell, as long as you all like it that's all that matters. Up from 1,745 two years ago to 2,003 last year. Maybe 2,100 this year? You don't need any of the TWO THOUSAND PLUS shooters that used to shoot the GAH event when it was in Vandalia Ohio. You all are going in a fantastic direction. That picture you posted proves it.
Yeah. you have a point. Vandalia was about the greatest trapshoot ever. It was about the best venue. Your shit pipe graph may be your best work yet.
You mean by the ATA ...... correct ?????? As bad as camping got at Vandalia, at least they OWNED the spots ..... NOT just made to rent EMPTY spots in BFE ...... What a shame the ATA acquired the N1H1 virus that has no cure ...... Vandalia may have survived without the infection .....
User 1: "As bad as camping got at Vandalia, at least they OWNED the spots:" That just shows how totally clueless you are, user1. The ATA owned only 57/58 acres of the 250 or it used for a while before the airport took away 30 traps on the west end for a rental-car facility; the rest - say 3/4 -was owned by the Dayton Airport. The ATA owned camping areas A (the ghetto) and B (millionaires' row. ); the rest was rented land. Not that it makes (or made) the least bit of difference, which it does (or did) not. N1H1
Yea ..... this "rented land" was never intended to be a "camping area" ....... Dumb-ass people like you seen the need to whore it out to anyone willing to pay money to "camp" there ..... How is that for having a clue dumb-ass ???????????????
Don't run off yet ol'N1H1 ..... You post garbage like ..... "There are 1001 camping spots at the WSRC and all are rented." ..... And then avoid it ..... not so fast ..... Who rented ALL 1001 camping spots ..... that includes those reserved for the IDNR and the ATA ?????????????
The rented 3/4 of the Vandalia grounds was also the overcrowded parking that was so cramped, so inaccessible, and unguarded that local thieves made off with a dozen or so gun annually just by levering open car trunks and taking home anything they found. Two from Dayton came to the 2006 Grand American in Sparta, presumably to continue their long-time habit of preying on ATA shooters, were instantly apprehended by the police here, and, as far as I know, the annual crime wave at the Grand American ended for good right there. N1H1
Vandalia was "overcrowded", "cramped", and "inaccessible" because people actually wanted to shoot there ...... Now how about an answer to your garbage post ..... Who rented ALL 1001 camping spots ..... that includes those reserved for the IDNR and the ATA ?????????????
Funny how I never had any difficulty renting a motel room in Vandalia. Nor did I have any difficulty obtaining a cheap flight to the airport located directly across the trap line. That said, if all those trailer spots were actually filled with trapshooters and their families grilling hot dogs and bringing beer from home then the little town of Sparta has little to gain from their presence. I'll settle for first class nearby accommodations at Cardinal Center next week.
Doc, As per the IDNR-ATA Lease, the ATA leases the entire campground for the 15 days of the Grand. I doubt there are locals and nearby families or other campers since camping blackouts are in effect during annual ATA events. The ATA is to pay the IDNR for every available campsite a fee in the amount of $29.70 for Premium sites of which there are 341 offering water, sewerage & electric; $25.20 for Standard sites of which there are 350 offering water & electric, and $18.00 for Overflow sites, also referred to as Electric and/or Primitive sites of which there are 310 offering electric only. Remember, 45 Standard sites are blocked each year for the IDNR (20 sites) and the ATA (25 sites). The ATA's sites are provided free according to the lease agreement. This reduces the number of available Standard lease sites to 305. From ATA-IDNR Lease Agreement: The price on last camping lease I saw was $625 for a Premium site for the 15 days of the Grand. The ATA pays the IDNR $445.50 so they realize a profit of about $12 a day or $179.50 for the 15 days. Standard sites provide a daily profit of about $7. If the ATA is ever in control of all the campsite leasing, they pay the IDNR about $360,000 each year prior to the Grand American. Under ideal conditions the ATA has the potential of $477,000 but that amount is always reduced by the discounted longer leases, AIM prices allowing daily leases, and unleased campsites. According the ATA documents: In 2015 the ATA received campsite rental fees of $252,084 with respect to the expense of $209,218. In 2016 the ATA received campsite rental fees of $396,386 with respect to the expense of $323,239. In 2017 the ATA received campsite rental fees of $464,902 with respect to the expense of $366,255. Leasing the entire campground has been a good decision of late and will likely be in the future. However, while the camping discussion is great for campers at the Grand tournament ie: Vandalia vs Sparta, it should be remembered that it was the ATA leadership who permitted crowded conditions choosing income over safety. Firearm thefts occurred often at the Grand. This can be attributed to a lack of security of which was under the control of ATA leadership. I maintain the success of the Grand American tournament is of greater importance than nicer camping conditions. Hopefully, readers get a better idea on the subject of camping during the Grand. Now, if somebody could educate me on those 25 free Standard campsites provided for the ATA officers, staff and delegates, I'd be most appreciative. I'd like to know if they are distributed fairly to those they were intended for. Thanks, HB
HB, I guess That being told, the IDNR and ATA CAN say the Campgrounds are "SOLD OUT". The ATA bought them all !!!
Agree, and you can not beat the Cardinal for accessibility. As good as Vandalia was, you have to admit the camping and parking was crowded.
I would rather park at the west end at Vandalia and ride the wagon than dodge atvs and golf carts to park by my bank at Sparta. I have no motorhome. The daily commute to shoot Sparta makes parking at Vandalia look pretty good. Seems the promised hotels never appeared anywhere near the mistake by the containment ponds.
You guys better ease off on poor ole N1H1 or you will have him stutter typing like he has done in the past when things aren't going his way. Dave Berlet
