I visited the ATA HOF building Wed and Thurs. The person in charge told me the story about the storm during the week. He said the doors blew open. Then he showed me the doors. I am not a door expert. I don't know much about museums. I am sure there must be some value to the items inside. I know my bank's doors don't blow open. If they did we all would be standing outside in a storm. I report. You decide. Merlo out
Was it the doors on the east side of the building that got sucked open and how much damage to the items inside?
I am not sure which doors are east. As you walk in they would be the doors to the right end of the building. I was told they did not lose a single paper.
2 million bucks, and wind blows the doors open ? Perhaps they have learned they need latches on the doors instead of just pull handles. This could be a serious issue for them. Live and learn. I think they get some big winds there too.
You can't have latches on doors on a commercial building. It is a fire code that when building is open, entry / exit doors can not be latched ir locked. It is a life safety issue.
George, Thanks for your comments. Although funny, absolutely unnecessary. Obviously one who has not accepted the fact that the HOF is in its new home whether you like it or not.
No so Smelly Dog. I am fine with the WSRC being in Sparta. I would not want it in my state. I am also fine with the ATA HOF in Sparta. We have tooo many cheap horse barn shaped buildings in my area. It would confuse the farmers and trapshooters. You may want to visit the PA HOF. It rivals the HOF in Sparta and doesn't look like Secretariat's resting place. Good luck with the latches on the barn doors. The doors lock on HOF in PA. Say hi to Mr. Ed........george
You can have latches on doors (safety issue), the doors on a public building cannot be blocked, locked or chained when it is open to the public, that is the Fire Code, they must also be plainly marked with Red EXIT signs ... I was a code enforcement officer while assigned to light duty while on the Fire Dept ... The schools used to chain the doors so the kids could not cut classes and skip school so once it got reported to our Dept, I went over and pulled the fire alarm ... You want to talk about chaos, no body knew where or how to get out being as the doors were chained ... The Principle ran up to me and asked me what the Hell I was doing, I responded having a Fire Drill and told him he was in BIG trouble because I was the Fire Dept ... I placed the Principle under arrest for endangerment and cut the chains with a bolt cutter ... The Capt on my shift knew I was going to do this so the Dept and mutual aid did not respond, he did come down to observe and back me up ... Mutual aid responded to all school, hospital, and court buildings in our Battalion, so they were told to stand down unless called out by someone on the scene ... This was the 3 rd time this particular Principle was charged with the same infraction so he lost his job ... That was not as much fun as the day I evacuated Maywood's Cook County Court Building while court was in process, needless to say the Fire Chief was not happy with me ... Fire Code Violations are serious business but can be fun if done right ... Got me off of light duty a lot quicker than was anticipated ... WPT ... (YAC) ... Push bars are legal in Illinois ... I know the fire codes inside out, back ward, and forward, had to to be able to do my job ...
INSIDE push bars to open the latches is what I had in mind. Can't see a problem with those but again, I don't know Illinois Fire Codes. Doesn't matter anyway, they won't do anything different, just let the wind and rain blow in like the one year that hell of a storm went through there and motor home awnings and tents went flying.
WPT.............I was a student at a school that did EXACTLY with the chains and locks you speak of.......I am here laughing at the thought of you pulling the FIRE ALARM and all the Hell that followed..........It is a serious business and I am sure glad to hear that you DID YOUR JOB..............tooooooooo many LOOK the other way......DannyB
Walk by those doors when a gust of wind slaps you in the face with it and you will wish you had a latch to keep it from being blown open ... You will probably look and feel like you got hit by a truck, not to mention the cost of tempered safety glass if by chance it breaks on impact ... Not a good idea to not have them so they cannot blow open ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
