At what age did you retire?

Just wondering what age you retired if you are retired? I'm 62.6 and thinking about it since things aren't going well at work. I know I'm an old man but still think hanging it up at this age might be too early. Thinking maybe get a job at a big box retailer part time like HD or Lowes to earn enough money for trap targets. Your input.

 

Haven't retired yet. I was able at 55 to start drawing my Union Carpenter pension. Just turned 58 a couple months ago and still working every day. If the knees and hips hold out I'll stick it out till I'm 62. Then I'll slow down a bit.
Still like getting up early and going to work. Lots of young ones coming into the trade that need mentoring.

Retired at 62 and DO NOT miss working outside in all weather, climbing on big trucks, or driving to work everyday. I worked the numbers on SS and you are essentially betting with the government, If you make it beyond 80, they win you end up with a little less money. I don't know how I managed to get all my stuff done while I had to work, during nice weather, I stay busy doing stuff I enjoy!

Wife moved to take care of her elderly father while I continued to work for 3 more years.

I walked into the office one day and requested that I be let go to see my wife...3 months later they finally let me go and I never looked back.

BE SURE you have a plan to do something...The first 3 years after things didn't work out for me getting a PT job, and I got sort of bored...

Then I began buying up old, small outboard motors and repairing them and selling them to fishermen. Didn't make a lot of money, but had a lot of happy young kids and old men constantly looking for me to repair their oldies...

We have since moved to Florida with so much to do I don't need to actually find things any more.

 

Retire as soon as you are able. Life is very unstable, that is why I never buy green bananas, and I also eat my dessert first.. Roger C

Retired as an electrician at 62.Then went back to school and got certified as a Fire Inspector and Investigator. That was 7 years ago. I currently do inspections in 7 communities.

 

Looks like a lot of guys clocked out early.. What did you guys do for health insurance?

 

I had only 3 years to stay healthy then Medicare.

 

Left at 64. Kept my wife working for the insurance & spending money!

 

Married a much younger wife with health insurance for both of us. Lucky I guess.

 

I thought I retired at 57, but now I have a full time "HOBBY"---Making THE UNLOADER
Shell Cutters and Barrel Gauges !!!---Also keeping the Post Office busy---Sending them all over the world !!!-------THANK'S to everyone that keeps me out of the WhorXhouses and Bars in Montana !!!!

 

Had a good union plan to continue health insurance to medicare.

 

Retired at 62.5 Best thing I ever did for myself.

 

Full healthcare coverage for myself & wife from retirement for life UAW.

 

59 yrs 10 mos. due to health. Enjoyed working but it took its toll. Have enjoyed retirement too. Don't think it's nearly as stressful and recommend it for everyone as soon as possible.

 

54 the first time. 67 the last time. Won't be a third.

 

Paid for health insurance out of savings for 5 years...

BC & BS over $800.00/mo for the two of us.

A little rough, but as soon as we could get social security that relieved the money issues somewhat.

Would do it over again in a heart beat.

 

I just retired at 64. Sold by business and do not miss it. The wife is still working for a few more years.

 

I'm at 64.5 and still working. Fortunately my work is still going pretty well ( most days).
I'm aiming at June '09 ( 66 birthday) but might stretch another year if all is going OK.
I should figure out a part time gig Post retirement to help with the target and shells budget..

 

I retired 28 years ago yesterday,after working 39.5 yrs for an electrical utility.I was 59.5 at the time.I have never regretted
that decision.Although there has been some health problems I still enjoy all the shotgun shooting sports,and participate
on a regular basis.

 

Retired at age 63, been retired for 8 years. Don't miss work. Some days I think may have to go back so I have some rest time!! With fishing, shooting, grandkids, and some travel time goes by fast.

 

I retired at age 54, my job was interfering with my hobby! After retirement, I worked part time for a friend in his machine shop doing work connected with my hobby of dragracing. In 2008 at the age of 62, I switched back to my old pastime of trapshooting. I have never regretted retiring early, you only go around once!

Petetgun99, I got a brother who is 68 years old and he still lays brick, block, stone every day weather permitting.

I wish I could get him to kick back and start enjoying life a little more..

 

Elsie,the trade is so hard on a person there is little left to do after a days work but rest.

 

Retired at 55 and was glad that I did--

 

Took early retirement package at 53. Spend time shooting, hunting, working the acreage, helping parents and grandkids, officiating HS and college sports. Plenty to do!

Walked out the door, never looked back, and never regretted it...

"Semi Retired" at 62 and 1 minute. Still making holsters, trap leather , kept my FFL and doing CCW Classes for add'l income. Wife has my health insurance and will at least until Medicare kicks in. All works out in the end.

 

Retired at the age of 57 in 2003 and haven't worked a day since.

 

65 to may wife's over the years to do it earlier !

 

I retired at 62 from my Refrig, & HVAC business, then became a State Certified Building Inspector, and then a Home Builder, Building Contractor, I built my last 2 homes, plus built homes for others using my Contractors whom I had confidence in.

As soon as I could go on full Social Security and Medicare. At that age,I was no longer penalized for income as I will probable do some part-time work and have investment income.
The alarm clock has been unplugged for five months and I'm enjoying life!
Seems that health insurance plays a big part in peoples plans....

Im 74,.. spent all of my life in the building trades,retired with a great union pension in my early 60's.What so hard to believe is the trades are asking the retires to come back to work,and still receive your pension and ss , This is to help fill the void of workers in the trades .Seems young people are adverse to working with there hands,pity.

 

My mistake ,retired in 98.

65. Wanted to go as close to 70 I could but got hit with a Medical condition that forced me to quit.
Cant say that I have enjoyed it.
