About 7 years ago I bought the shotgun that I have for sale here in this listing. When I saw it, I knew that I wanted to try to put it back in the hands of its original owner, a family member, a friend, or an old squad mate. Back then, I tried the avenues of research that were available to me, but after a time, I just gave up. Because of the almost mythological aura of Vandalia, and because of the fact that this shotgun is now approaching its 50th birthday, I realized that I needed to try again to help the gun find its "home." Here enter our one and only History Buff. I approached HB, told him what I wanted to do, what my goals were, and how I would be presenting the price I would be asking for the gun. He very graciously jumped to the task. In short order he had uncovered the rationale for the production of the gun, and he was able to name the two engravers who had worked on the project. The mountain of research he has contributed to the understanding of the history of the 1967 "1 of 10" series is literally overwhelming. I am indebted to him. I believe that I bought the gun in 2010, the year after my wife became ill. I remember paying $1540.00 plus freight. The gun is not in perfect, collector condition. It has been used and handled a bit more roughly than it would have been if I had been the original owner. I do not have any intention of trying to make a profit on the sale of this gun, nor will I take a loss. I want the gun to go back to Ohio, where it belongs, and I want it to be appreciated for what it is today. If it could go on display for all to see, that would be wonderful. If it goes into a safe, that would be sad, but perfectly acceptable. For better or worse, it is a piece of the very rich history of the sport. 1967 "D" Grade Remington Model 1100TD LOP--14 1/4" over vented Remington recoil pad Drop at comb 1-5/16" parallel Drop at heal 1-5/8" Choke-Full Length of barrel 30" $1540 plus freight to your FFL. cl3, Yes, the barrel is the original, numbered to the gun and "D" Grade engraved at the breach. I'll try to add pictures. Thank you for your interest.
cl3, For the first time since I bought the gun, I just looked at the serialization on the barrel. I have no explanation for the variation in the final number of the SN on the gun and the SN on the barrel.
cl3, Thank you for your interest. When I reached out to History Buff for information on this shotgun, of the massive amount of information he uncovered, he found a recent (April 2017) James D. Julia auction in which the Number 7 gun was sold. The lot # for the sale was 2381. Apparently the serial numbers for the guns in the "1 of 10" series were sequential, as gun #7 is numbered 379661V followed by my #8 which is numbered 379662V. The pre-auction estimate for that lot was $1250-$1750. I think HB told me the gun sold for something like $2500.00 plus a buyers premium. Apparently Runge and Ennis(sp.) fell behind in their work and Remington got slightly miffed.
The receiver looks like it has little pits, true? Could you post clear pics of both sides of the receiver? Thanks for your time.
BigBill, Thank you for your interest. My camera skills are not good enough to make a better picture. The opposite side of the receiver is the standard "D" engraving typical of the period. As I mentioned above, the gun is not in collector condition. The imperfections in the receiver bluing would more accurately be called freckling, I think, a result of hard handling and neglect. The gun is far from perfect, but it is "one of 10" and really one of a kind. My hope is that it will go to someone who wants it for what it is. Please feel free to make me a genuine offer that won't hurt me too much.
I own #4 of 10 1968 ATA very neat piece of trap shooting history, I have two barrels with mine, both D Grade one full other IMod.
It's no fair to brag without having some pictures to go with it. I'm sure I speak for a bunch of us when I say, "Please post some nice pictures of that beautiful gun."
