If we changed back to a 3 hole target, would you change guns or stocks? What changes? For those that cant remember the targets were straightaways from station one and five. And a little faster
Oleo, Do you think we will ever see a three hole target rule from the ATA in our life time? They are more likely to give up their travel fees and $16,000.00 guns first. It is scary to think they may listen to the shooters for once. Roger C.
As this group gets older while continuing the current power structure we're likely see more proposals for shorter, narrower targets than wider ones.
They just refuse to realize that all old shooters are not wimps. The young crowd will never know what a real championship means. Roger C.
But I'll bet you the proverbial "dollar to a donut" that if the ATA went to faster 3-hole targets (and I truly wish they would) the loudest screaming you'd hear would be from the old timers.
It is the older shooters that saw the 3 hole targets that want them. It is the fat cats at the 27, and those that have been refusing reductions that don't want them.
Maybe bring back 3 hole, no interrupter, and have the squad turn down 18 targets like they did at Vandalia so everyone on the squad can shoot straight-a-ways
To answer the question, no I wouldn't have to change guns. 3 hole targets with NO interrupter? 5 guys that shot together all the time and could count past 10 without taking off their shoes and socks? They wouldn't have to turn down any targets to get straight aways Any questions?
I doubt that VERY MUCH. I am an OLD,OLD Timer at 76 Yrs Old and love Fast, Wide Angle Targets. Yours In Sport Gary Bryant...................................Dr.longshot
columbus, I attained the 27 yard line back in the 70's, at the Springfield, Ohio Stein Shoot, we shot 3 hole targets then like real serious shooters. I have over 100 trophies from the Grand,,ten different state shoots, three different zones, four different satalite grands, along with the Las Vega's', Reno clubs. Shooters today do not know what it was like to compete on those conditions. No one raised or lowered the targets after the shoot started unless the targets were totally unshootable. I can remember shooting in Vegas when if you missed a target you had to watch so you would not get hit by it, also you had to dodge pieces from the ones that were hit. And the wimps of today want to continue to shoot soft two hole targets. Get real soon all of the real shooters will be memories. Roger C.
Tell you what Roger, I and the other newer shooters shoot whatever targets ATA says we shoot. I've no say in going back to 3 hole targets like the REAL shooters had. I enjoy shooting and will continue to do so but one thing I'd like; the next shoot at CC I'd like to meet you and have you call me a wimp to my face.
3-hole targets are not faster-just wider. The biggest complainers about 3-hole targets were the marathon shooters. Most shooters then didn't know what hole the trap was set in.
After all this 2 Hole complaining, why hasn't anyone had the guts to promote a 3 Hole Target shoot? 3-hole targets are ATA legal so go right ahead. CC can throw any legal target they like, ATA has no say in it.
Ah --- there it is. Bat....the guy that sounds like the guy that got that lifetime award for taking the sport out of trapshooting. He asks the question because he knows those competing for the points will go to the easier clubs. It is all about the points. Not about the monies. Ruining the handicap system created that. Changing the targets ruined the handicap system. And for the record - some 3 hole targets may be legal but setting the targets at straightaway from number 1 and 5 may get an ass from the EC to stop the shoot.
columbus, Always be careful what you ask for. You may not like the outcome. Now you have a nice day. Only a small person makes threats that are tooth less. olealliedawg, I agree, but most shooters can not even tell why they missed a target. The it's in the air shoot at it, do not understand the importance of target flights. They should be the same at every registered club. And by the book. Roger C.
FG, You care that much about AA Team that it isn't worth putting on a shoot if you are afraid they will skip it? Why would they skip it anyway? They are going to beat us on 2 hole or 3 hole. Would be interesting to see if your prediction would come true, a large dropoff in AA attendance at CC if 3 holes targets thrown and everything else equal? Also, no EC member can shut down a shoot at CC for throwing 3-hole targets, since all 3-hole targets are legal. Geez, just do it if it is such a big deal.
Bat, I believe the Spring Grand had a problem with wide angles and the shoot was shut down because of them. Check it out for your self. Roger C.
I'm not small, have all my teeth and made no threat. Just want to see the man who sits at a keyboard and calls people wimps.
I know that Roger, but I wasn't talking about a Satellite Grand, I was talking about the CC, or any other club for that matter. Shoot management determines how to set the targets at their own shoot (within the rules of course), not the ATA (except for the Grand which I believe is the only shoot ATA manages; I think Satellites are still technically managed by the club, not the ATA, but ATA is more tied in with those shoots so I am not sure of that.)
Bat, Why are you talking about the CC? I was talking about what is better for trapshooting. The topic is not about the CC. It is about the wider angles. I would love to see the CC go without the ATA. OH and PA doesn't need the ATA. Only 1 of 6 targets thrown in OH and PA are registered anyway. Who mis-manages the U.S. Open?
Bat Below is the link where Taylor (yeah crooked Pull2012 Taylor) stopped a shoot that had targets that were a smidgen wider than 2 hole targets. http://www.americantrapshooter.com/index.php?threads/interesting-ata-minutes.1278/#post-12861
Talking about CC because (1) it does not host any ATA managed shoots, (2) it draws great crowds, and (3) is in your area. CC can throw 3 hole targets any time it wants, just like any other club. It has a great following so I'd say it is as good a place to try it as any. Was Taylor "shoot management" at that shoot? If not, why did "shoot management" let him make any decisions on the matter. If the ATA is in control at the satellite grands, and they insist on 2 hole, 2 hole it is. But that does not apply to CC, so have at it and throw some 3 hole targets. Nobody is going to stop you. I know if I was planning on making the trip to CC, or anywhere for that matter, 3 hole would not be one of my concerns.
columbus, You do not know me or what I have done in my life time. I suggest we discontinue this conversation. If you agree to do so,it is over. (quote) I would like to meet you and have you call me a wimp to my face) It read like a threat. ROGER C.
Try it? We already had 3 hole targets. Neil got a lifetime achievement award for taking the sport out of trapshooting and ruining the handicap system. Put them in at the grand.
See Roger, right there is the problem. I don't know you, I don't know what you've done in your lifetime. Who you are and what you've done doesn't mean anything to anyone but you. I don't care what you've done. It's irrelevant to me. So, to have you sit at your computer, say that you belong to the generation of REAL shooters and call the rest of us a bunch of wimps is insulting.
Columbus, Why do you want to promote something that you are not capable of understanding? No you do not know me, and from your posts I do not want to know you, you come on like a very abnoxious individual, Roger C.
I know ROGER and some of the things he has done !! To start with, he has always been a better shooter than me !!---He has ALWAYS run a respectable business, as well as a great gun club manager. If you started now, it would take you 2 lifetimes to just catch up with him !!! I don't have a dog in this fight, but just my honest opinion !!!----GB.
Uh, what am I promoting? Me, obnoxious? (please note the word is spelled with an O not an A). I'm not the one calling all new shooters wimps. And you're correct, I don't want to know you, there's nothing to learn from people like you. Have to tell you the old days are gone, Vandalia is gone. The ATA is what it is, you old time shooters are the ones who let it get that way. To denigrate those of us who just started shooting is uncalled for. Even if we are idoits.
I'm interested in seeing the results from a club in PA that held a 4-hole target non-registered shoot this past Sunday. 20 squads shot 'em-about the same number of shooters at most MS state shoot events.
From an old timer with 53 years of experience and a former shoot manager: 3-hole targets mostly disappeared from Trapshooting in the 70's We even shot plenty of 2.5 hole targets in that era too. (only old Winchester hand set trap repairmen knew that trick). The biggest crybabies during the one year 3-hole experiment were marathoners. Shooters naturally gravitated to those clubs with 2-hole targets that made scoring easier. Kay Ohye's handicap average went UP .5% in the 3 hole year. Wider angle targets will often affect scoring until better shooters get used to 'em Voice activated pulling has a much greater effect on scoring than leaving it to a young, gum chewing girl planning her Saturday date. It was great fun this Sunday league watching one of our PA State team captains break a 20/25 at our club while throwing shells and getting visibly upset. We do throw straightaways from 1 and 5 and he only shoots there a few times a year. Former Grand American champion Malmstedt missed one while the 'dawg broke 50 straight. Familiarity wins!
columbus, Never pretended to be a good typist. I am a very good judge of people. I would like to suggest you crawl back in the hole you came out of, make sure you do a good wipe job. I have no more time to waste on you. As far as you learning, it may be possible but it would be a very long weary road. As I can tell you know all there is to know, and all of that knowledge could fit on the head of a pin. NOW CRAWL BACK UNDER YOUR ROCK, IT IS PAST YOU BED TIME. Roger C.
Truth hurt a little Roger? There is nothing, absolutely nothing to learn from you old curmudgeons. Take your old stories, your old memories and go away. I'm sure I don't speak for all relatively new trap shooters but I probably speak for quite a few. WE DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT ANY MORE! We're all wimps, we can't possibly understand the game the way it was in ancient times; so why keep telling us the same tired old crap? If you're that disgruntled, dislike the ATA that much, then get the hell out.
100 straight was high while a 99 also came in. The shooter who broke the hundred shoots low gun and is a quite proficient Sporting Clays shooter. There ya have it!
Columbus, just keep shooting for points and trinkets while the real men from that so called by-gone era shot for cash. Trust me, you're not qualified to carry the shell bags of guys who charged bunkers in WWII and made Trapshooting what it was and never will be again.
Hey stupid! You don't speak for me. I doubt you speak for the thousands that left trapshooting. I don't even think you can speak for yourself. If you don't like the forum you could excuse yourself. Or you can use the ignore mode on the forum. Just a suggestion. Make the targets wider!
Like I said, if it's in bad shape, you guys are the ones who let it get that way. Oh, and I agree with rickyd - make the targets wider. Hell, let's just switch it all to Bunker and be done with it.
Great post dawg! Maybe we can ease up a bit on Columbus. What if you never were at a shoot that had 4000 - 5000 shooters? Would you believe we used to shoot for cars? It is hard for some to believe the stories are fact. Imagine the Tri State shoot in the backwoods of Steubenville, OH having nearly as large a purse as the Grand. And those were some crooked targets. Now the queer folk that have taken over the ATA have removed the sport and any need for testosterone. Pink ribbons, atta boys and points are the new norms for registered shooting.
Where did you get that? Crank 'em up and spread 'em out. Would love to see wider faster targets. Couple that with mandatory ydg reductions ( I can hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth already) and this sport would be greatly (in my most humble opinion) improved.
That is True, an EC Member stopped the shoot, they could not find the 3 Hole Bars that came w/the Pat Traps, I read someplace they were in the Maint. Building Gary Bryant....................................Dr.longshot
