Mossberg shotgun

What happen to the thread about the guy making a trap shotgun out of a Mossberg 500.
I was wondering how it was working out.

 

Ya, I was looking too. One of my customers has this gun and was following the spring kit issue and modifications.

Maybe it got canned due to "thread drift."

 

Now trappermike ..... you should know that the entire thread does not "get canned" for "drift" ..... but some people do, if you "get my drift" .....

It is just a guess, but threads with "hot links" to other sites seem to have a short life .....

So then why is it gone? Would like an explanation. It was a pretty good set of threads that even listed some after-market items the new shooter could access.

 

I didn't delete it, so I am giving an opinion .....

It may have been a "good" thread, with a "link" used to direct traffic to "their" site for "hits".

I didn't "look behind the curtain", or open it, to see the "details" of this "link" that was in the thread.

Those who have their money invested in this site make the rules, not me. A PM to the "Admin" will get you more mileage than my opinions.

 

What the big deal, a spring kit for shotguns, maybe ask the spring kit company to post a add. Is this shooting web site or what

 

It was my thread. I couldn't get the images to load into the post, I tried a dozen times. They would always seem to upload, but never appeared in the post. So I uploaded them to a popular image hosting site and posted the link in the thread. I guess I instead of asking me to remove the link, they just deleted the whole thread.

I'll post an updated thread and try uploading the images again.

I went out Thursday evening and shot 4 rounds and went again Sunday morning and shot 3 rounds with it. That was my 3rd and 4th time ever shooting and I hit 15-15-16-15 on Thursday and 17-15-16 on Sunday. It was quite windy both days, and cold Thursday, like 20. Sunday was a bit warmer, high 30s.

Oh, and for what it's worth, I'm shooting an improved mod choke.

Edit: also there was no attempt at trying to 'direct traffic to my site' or any other for that matter, for any other purpose other than seeing pictures of my gun.

 

If there is a "problem" using a function of this site, PM "Just Joe". It works much better than having "misunderstandings".

It "sounds" as simple as you used a "link", to a "site" that someone has a "problem" with. Things happen.

I'm glad your back. Shooting when it's cold and windy is not fun. Do you have a shooting coat and shooting gloves, it helps. I would used your full choke tube on windy days.
What brand of shotgun shells are you using. Remember trap targets are a rising target, trap shotguns shoot high. They did have tracer shotgun shells at one time.
I have never used them, so I do not know if they work to see where you are shooting. Winchester sells a target shotgun shell that show the wad going toward the target, I have never used these shells also. Keep shooting the more you shoot the better you will get.

 

Sockmonkey - Regarding chokes: I've often heard the "pros" make the comment "Choke for Smoke." I kinda laugh about the comment. It reminds me when I was hot and heavy into NHRA drag racing with a California build Modified Production while living in the Midwest. My car was pretty hot and over a couple of years it was never beaten.

Often times a competitor would come over to my spot and ask questions about this and that. Usually they wanted to know certain things I had done to the car/engine, etc. I was always kind, but I never divulged much. Do you kinda understand "choke for smoke" advice???

An old timer once told me to be careful volunteering too much info, or be careful not to beat someone too badly, because the next time they'd be back after sending a bundle just to beat your a##! Incidentally, I had a toggle switch on my dash that killed the brake lights. If I was too far ahead at the 1320, I'd flip the switch and hit the brakes, so as NOT to make them look bad.

OK, so what does this have to do with shooting and chokes?

Well, I started shooting trap in 1974, I won a major handicap event at the Grand, and in 1975 I made the 27 and stayed there the rest of my career. I was never very good about listening to the "old timers' wisdom" including choke for smoke, and other wive's tales. That may work for the pros who shoot thousands and tens of thousands rounds annually. Hell, I was a poor old school teacher/mathematician and I shot probably at most around 12,000-15,000 a year back when I was traveling but that included practice and leagues. At the end of my career, I struggled to get enough targets just to make my all state team. I burnt up lots of gas and windshield time traveling for targets.

Here's what I did to determine my choke restrictions and maybe this is my only advice to you in the regard.

I'd have a guy or two stand on the adjacent trap houses left and right and get a visual of WHERE I was breaking my targets. I did this with singles and 27 yards. Then I would pattern my gun AT THOSE DISTANCES. I never did understand why one would simply pattern a gun at 30 yards... unless you broke you target at 30 yards. And, because I shot/shoot so damn fast, 30 yard patterning was simply not going to work for me.

As result and only because I shoot fast, I shoot a choke restriction of 0.018" for singles and 0.028" for the 27... and I shoot 8's from the 27. I also shoot a 0.015" for doubles first shot, and 0.018" for the second shot. It works for me, but I doubt it works for anyone else unless you shoot the way I do and I DO NOT recommend you shooting like me either. I am a stickler about STANCE. That's another story.

Consequently, in your fun journey of trapshooting, shoot what YOU think works best for you. Do not be afraid to experiment, and for God's sake don't listen to everyone's advice (hey, even including mine).

I still laugh when I hear someone say "You need to get that 'figure 8' so you know the gun fits."! Hell, if you picked up my Perazzi and mounted it, you'd think you were shooting straight up at the heavens. There's no figure-8 on my guns... I can see the whole railroad down my rib.

I recommend that you get to my website sometime and download near the bottom of it, the "Gun Holds" photos particularly if you are a two-eyed shooter. I have always loved the video "Trapshooting with the Remington Pros" by D. Lee Braun and Dick Baldwin. I interviewed with Dick in 1976 when Remington offered me an Industry Shooting Pros job. That video was done in the late 50's or 60's. It talks about gun fit, stance, hold, and shooting follow-through shown on a gun camera. It is probably one of the best there is out there still even today.

Oh, forgot to mention, when I shot the 99 in the Vandalia Handicap at the Grand, I shot 8½ RXP's from the 23½!
