How long before you won your first trophy in a Trap event?

Little less then a year for me and I won a buckle. Won money before that but it is gone and the buckle remains. Also would you rather have money or trophy?

Money, unless it is a really big event, then money and a trophy is nice.

 

Won my first in Handicap first year I started. Money is nice but at the larger shoots I would still like a trophy.

 

My first ATA Event? Or first Trophy, 1 st trophy at Frank Banish's gun club 2nd week using a borrowed trapgun, Ist registered was Mid American 1968 Middletown Ohio Class B singles.

The money might be long gone but that trophy lets you remember a good day. That's what trophies are really for. You can look at it and remember where, when, how, even the guys you shot with.
As far as the first one? Second year of ATA. I think I had around 1200 total registered 16's under my belt. It was a marathon shoot and if you ran one of the 100's they gave you a "trophy". I think I still have it somewhere. One of those big serving style plates with the chrome finish. The kind that flakes off after a few years. Cheap, but man was I proud of that thing.
NO back patting, that was what the plates were for. They must have given out a dozen that day. Old style targets.
I know, probably didn't really count since it was just the second hundred in a marathon but it sure made me proud to win it. After all , that's why they give out trophies, isn't it?

Anything I win is at the Oregon WRITA tournaments.

 

Might have been my first ATA Handicap event, a windy day at Hannibal, in 1995. I was a member at Quincy Gun club then.

 

May 10, 1970 at EAFB. My first registered shoot and the clubs very first registered targets thrown. I won the singles and handicap trophy's along with some cash! I still use the set of Lyman scales I won as the handicap trophy that day!

Won a trophy once, took it home and boiled it with potato's, carrots and onions. Never did that darn trophy tender.

 

It was the spring of 1984 out at the old Paine Field Gun Club, now that land is part of the Boeing Plant in Everett, WA. I shot a 96 in the singles and won the shoot off for the buckle and won the handicap later that day outright. I won $270.00 and told the wife I should quit work and go shooting to make a living.

Five weeks later I ran 100 from the 22 yard line and it has been down hill ever since then.

First shoot I signed up for won the lewis cash with a 88.. was only guy in and was 100 and some bucks.. I thought, "this is easy" been losing money ever since.

 

Well I retired 11 years ago but the shooting for a living just didn't pan out.

 

That's kind of ironic Jim. My first shoot was on Labor Day in 1987 at Evergreen. It was a stormy/ rainy /miserable/normal weekend and I won the singles, also with a 96. Nice belt buckle.

2013 also with a 96 but it was T Shirt weather. Also I won it in a shoot off with a much younger man.

 

When I first started shooting trap I really wanted to win a belt buckle.

After all these years I have quite a number.

What do you do with them? I have thrown out a bunch.

I think I still have the first one. It took me a couple of years to win.

 

I only have one, lol, and will keep it.

 

I want to say with in the first month of registering targets : Maywood Sportsmans Club in Elmhurst, Illinois ... 1975 ... I have enough belt buckles to hold me for this lifetime, I need some belts ... I always liked the money shoots because I had boxe's of trophy's stored in the garage, gave them to my kids, not sure what they did with them ... The money I would use for the next shoot ... wpt ...(yac) ...

 

About a year. All of a sudden I got hot and picked up two buckles in one shoot. I now have 3 in less than a year. I have attached them to my shooting pouch, ammo pouch and my shooting belt. Three is all i wanted and need.

Yep, they sat in the closet in the gun room for years.
Some of the ones I won had a small engraved plackard on the base. Usually had the standard shooter on top. If I could get the plackard off without damaging the trophy I would donate them to the club for a shoot. That way the only cost to the club was for another tag.

First shoot I entered. Shot a 99 with a 28 inch Browning special sporting clays.Won a nice belt buckle.

 

LOL wind always blowed at Hannibal..thats where Leo got his start. Got to Hannibal just in time for the last squad of hcp...shot a 84..walkin off the line to the truck while talking to myself about where that days shootin all went wrong. The guys on porch yell down at me..Chuck how you do? Me..84 them.. you are high...LOL very tuff place to shoot.

 

Yes, just like that. I cannot quite remember my score, I am thinking high 80's - low 90's. I am pretty sure I was also HOA, not for certain though, for sure my yardage and Leo was there that day. I remember the guys that brought me into the ATA, out of Quincy, patting me on the back so to speak, saying I beat the best, at least that day.

Could have been in a dream though.

Looking for my shoot card from that day so as to verify, I have it somewhere.

I was a regular there at the club when I was based in Quincy with Great Lakes Airlines. I left Quincy just prior to the accident, Kate, Darrin(sp) as well as the other souls on board are still missed.

Shot a 1187 Premier Trap I bought at the Hardware store in Quincy, as well used Mec 9000G at another place in town.

Im sure we meet and I know the folks that helped you there. I just cant place you yet. I shot my first event at Quincy in 1979 it was a NSSA event. First ATA there in 1992 Chuck

 

I don't remember but it was a non registered shoot in the mid 70"s. The trophy is packed away some where so some day I will find it and look back and say to myself "Those were the good old days"

 

Buckles are great prizes. Won my only buckle at the Montana state shoot in Great Falls.

 

Money is good for me... trophies collect dust which means work cleaning them...
I won sub jr. League trophy in 1986 was only 9.

 

Trophy for sure.

First was a buckle in a handicap in 2002. Very windy day. Won with a 93.

 

And there is the reason trophies are a nice thing to have.

I won a Silver Pickle Plate my second year shooting, but the first year I only shot 100 targets. I got my first 100 straight the 3rd year.
