Scholastic Clay Target Program Supplying Future Meat Shooters

The most penalized group of shooters in the ATA is the SCTP shooters. Those shooters will be flocking to the Cardinal Center for the National Tournament and the Collegiate Championship this year.

Being startup shooters they get a kick in the shorts for not having enough targets to attend the Grand and some state shoots like Ohio.

This group of shooters is educated and come from upstanding families. Most with the funds to support more than one youth shooter. But what happens after high school / after college?

These are the new old "Penalty A Shooters." Will they be willing to be pushed to shoot up with the AA and AAA shooters as they will be self supporting after college? It is tough starting a family, and a new job.

An SCTP shooter won a shoot with 45 shooters. He was bumped up 2 yards to the 21. It was a 2 yard minimum bump. You say well the system works. Darn sandbagger.

He won with a 91. Lesson learned SCTP shooter. Kid has to shoot from the 22 now!

No more penalty "A" class plus a two yard bump.

Lesson learned.

 

Why was the minimum 2 yards, I could see one yard but two seems a little stretched for SCPT ... The shooter does deserve a Bump for a job well done but should not be penalized in the process ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

 

If you are bumped up 2 yards at classification and you earn yardage then the yards goes from the yardage you shot from.
Must have been a zone shoot. OH State Tournament has the same 2 yard minimum.

Great score 91. Earned 3 yards.

 

If we had target requirements like we had when I started shooting in 1968, it was 500 targets each for a permanent card, you shot 20 yards then as a new shooter, and I earned yardage and won money from there. It was MORE fair back then, Now the older shooters do not want to be beat by the younger shooters that are coming up.

Known ability is not being fairly used any more. I was a good shooter doing my best and earned yardage fairly, I was never given any yardage.

I earned 5 yards my very first year in 1969 I joined ATA in 1968 in the fall, my very first trophy was Class B singles at Middletown Mid American 1969 and the rest is History. I was never ever known as a Sand Bagger, I never missed a target on purpose. They said Buy Gary Bryant in Calcuttas, he will never throw any targets.

I can only wish that the current SCTP and AIM shooters are let to win w/o throwing penalty yardage at them, and watch the Pride they have in their wins.

The Classification desk should know the new shooters and classify fairly w/o any penalties. That is the way to grow this sport!!!

Doc, best do a re-think. I believe you started at 22 yds. and moved up to the 21 after getting your permanent card!

 

I started at 22 yards and never shot closer than that unless it was practice or playing ... That's the way it was when I started ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

 

SCTP just started shooting Handicap and Doubles (American style trap) about 3 years ago at the SCTP American nationals at the WSRC. The first year, these 2 events were experimental. The last 2 years the events were actual events. I know because our Youth team has taken the Doubles Championship Trophy both years and taken the Handicap 2nd place trophy both years. Historically these targets are not registered with the ATA, only the 20016 yard Singles event is registered and that just resumed last year.

The SCTP Does not recognize any particular athlete's ATA Handicap yardage regardless whether or not the athlete has an assigned yardage.

If an athlete shoots in the Handicap event at the nationals his / her yardage is base on his/ her SCTP classification.
SCTP classifies the athletes by Grade in school, not age as the ATA does.

6th grade and under are rookies
7th and 8th grade are intermediates ( entry level or advanced depending on years in Intermediate level))
9th thru 12th grade are varsity (junior or senior varsity depending on years at Varsity level)

All Rookies shoot from the same yard lin,e 17 -18 if I remember correctly.
All Intermediates shoot from the same yard line, 20 or 21 if I remember correctly.
All Varsity shoot from the same yard line, 24 or 25 if I remember correctly.

The SCTP Athlete does not gain Handicap yardage in an SCTP shoot. Again, Handicap and Doubles targets are not registered with the ATA.
Only Singles targets are registered.

He/ she only gains yardage if he/ she is an ATA/ AIM member in an ATA/ AIM registered event not in an SCTP event.

I think the op's post is about whether these kids will be able to afford to register the targets or accept being penalized now and after graduation.

 

Barnett, thanks for the explanation on SCTP doubles and handicap. I don't know why the kids shoot any ATA registered, except as a revenue resource for the ATA. BD
