2-Hole Targets Way Too Tough, Let's Try 1-Hole

Nice to see someone trying to create a decent site for trapshooters, by trapshooters, like we used to have.

My first time on a forum. Hope it last. Would be nice to see names of clubs, where they are and when they shoot. I like getting to new clubs to shoot. ed drumheller

If those 2 hole targets are too tough for you, You may want to take up Skeet Shooting? We have a Skeet section on this site. You should have been around when Brad, and Leo shot all over the country in the 70s and 80s on 3 hole hand pulled targets, and had to eat Peanut butter and jelly when funds ran low till the next big shoot, I loved listening to Leo's stories of yesteryear, Wow I wish I had a tape recorder when he was telling us them at Cardinal Center.

I knew those two guys had target BREAKING abilities, shot the Grand in those years too. But never knew of their prowess at SETTING targets too.

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzz, Gary, there are three categories on this great new site. I think one of them is Skeet shooting. I don't know about you but I don't think I could break a hundred in four different guages like some top skeet shooters do. That statement about easy targets and Skeet reminds me of some of the "the ATA is all holy" guys on that old site.

This site is supposed to be open to all clay target disciplines. Why take a swipe at the guys that like Skeet shooting?
That would be like taking a swipe at Flyer shooters and you know that shooting pigeons IS the toughest of all the shotgun sports.

Yes I saw the skeet section. That is why I reminded you that there are skeet shooters on here. I didn't want you to insult anyone the first days this site was up.

Your "in jest" stuff has a knack of not coming across that way. You may be thinking it in your mind but you don't know how to show it in type. THAT is what got you in trouble over there. I'll make you a promise. I will never comment on any of your posts ever again and I will just let the mods on here decide if you stay or go.

The breaking and setting abilty sentence was confusing because you jump from one thought to another without letting us know you are doing it. Not any kind of picking.

As far as pot stirring, GO BACK ON THE OTHER SITE AND SEE IF I DIDN'T DEFEND YOU A NUMBER OF TIMES. The blowhard bigdon even thought you and I would get along great because I agreed with some of your thoughts on the ATA. AND rub his face in the fact that he lost that "grudge match" to you back in 2012. Wish I could have been there to see it.

Speaking of pigeons. I'm surprised I never shot at any of the same places as you here in PA. Now, you are 11 years older than me so that might explain why when I was shooting them I never heard of you.

Lastly, Flyers are not just tough. Wouldn't you agree that they ARE the toughest shotgun sport?

The toughest ones are the drivers, I killed 24 last was a drive I hit him fast but I shot him again and he hit the top of the fence and fell outside cost me $35,000, I shot Kingens in Indiana, and Kentucky damn memory fails me, I shot a Model 12 w/release trigger then. Wre used to shoot Buddy shoots w/ a hand pulled trap with an empty Paint thinner can and a pigeon pushed in w/metal shield so he could not comeout until pulled, you never knew who was going to get it, shooter that killed it got $5.00 and if missed the pot kept raising until bird is killed in the circle, I had killed $35.00 birds, in the 70's at Hugh McKinleys place former OSTA President, his place was in Darbydale Ohio, I still shoot a lot of pigeons at the egg farms north of Johnstown Ohio with My son and his buddies.

Flyersarebest, You know it might be my age and my mind thinking faster than my typing that is causing me trouble, In Ky. Shooters that flew planes would buzz the shoot so someone would drive over and pick em up and bring them back to the Flyer Shoot, back then you still had to be invited, they held some at Great Eastern Gun Club, and verified you were on the list at the start of the drive way before they would let you pass. I may know you by name. I used to practice flyers with Bob Colegrove, Bobby Micezkowski, Garth Henly, and others in the strip mine Steubenville ohio. That was a long time ago.

When you get to be our age, everything was a long time ago. Those were fun days though. A lot of today's younger or newer shooters will never know what it was like to shoot at a hundred caps targets with a good chance to win $30,000 and a Jeep. Just walking around Vandalia Thursday evening, looking out over the traps, with all its history, would make you stop and think, about FRIDAY. The BIG day.

When you thought about all the targets you had shot during the year, the thousands of practice targets, even when you were tired after work, all the time spent reloading, all the money you spent, working at the thing you loved so much, THAT was what it was all about. Striving to be the best. Even if it was just the best you yourself could be. Knowing, that after you had shot some decent scores during the year you COULD do it, from whatever yardage you were, YOU HAD A CHANCE.
That's all you wanted. A chance to be there. You knew that if you could keep it together you could break a 98 or even a 99 and THAT WOULD WIN!

Heck, even a 97 on Prelim Thursday of Grand week paid for the whole week. Could have paid for two Grand weeks. Plus enough to buy a new TM1 when you got home. And that box of silverware they used to give out. I'll bet no one ever did eat with those things. LOL And that wasn't the winning score. The lone 98 won a lot more than that. That was even before Budweiser started to add money. Not like now. Things change.

Things change for a lot of reasons, but for those years, it was the greatest time in my life.

Or a place you could go and shoot 30 pigeons and with a chance, small but still a chance, to win three times that $30,000. That is a whole other story.

Like the song says, "Those were the days."

Thanks for the links. I think this is great. I found different clubs by using google maps. Wish I had the time and money to visit every one of them. I hope more clubs or State assc list on here. Thanks again, Ed Drumheller

 

on flyers --you left out bradford in Pa., the place in Ky,Ryans, also they had flyers at somerset Pa --Hillside sporting clays.
Expensive sport. In the old days it was 1 dollar a shot for practice. Now I think it is about 5 dollars a shot plus the options like long run from the front and back, first 5, last 5, middle 15 , lewis class and such. Have not shot them for a long time. I believe they have mandatory purses now?? help me.

What about the zz bird game. Is that tough?? Never shot it. I heard about a clay game with a clay target in a ring with a ribbon on the end and when the clay breaks the ribbon has to land inside the ring. Not sure what it was called?

Hillside(closed now) had some shoots we made. Top of the line Sporting Clays facility when they were in business. First time I ever saw a "Pro Shop" at a place you shot anything. It was only an hour and change for us. Two rings on top of that hill.

Most of the shoots we made were in the Eastern part of PA. I will only mention the names because they don't shoot them there anymore. Strausstown, Valley View, Pikeville, and of course the one and only Hegins. Single barrel State Championship at Hegins. Double barrel State Championship at Pikeville.

Birds are now $9.00-$10.00 each. Practice birds are usually the same. The purse options usually read "must play $xxx.xx somewhere". Somethimes the main purse is compulsory.

We shot ZZ bird four or five different times. NOT easy. Never shot the clay target with a ribbon

$9-$10 per bird? Hell I can get a rotisserie chicken for less than that and it's cleaned and cooked!

I paid $3.00 for practice birds at Ryans and that was in the 70s

$4.00 when I started. Like the saying goes. Dinosaurs used to walk in California too.
