Unsingle buyers make me laugh!

A fellow at my club decided to buy a new gun. He had a well known top single. On singles he was between A and AA. Also a 25 yards shooter.

He bought an unsingle and now he shoots like he needs glasses. I don't get this need for an unsingle. Just guessing you aren't cool unless your average drops 5 birds a hundred.

 

Some shooters can shoot an unsingle while others aren't able to do so, Some of the shooters that can't shoot an unsingle appear to shoot off the rib ( trying to establish a relationship). I personally have shot unsingle barrels for over 30 years without the problem you describe.

 

By going from an unsingle to a top single brought me back to a Class A shooter.

just because you cant shoot one doesn't mean that other people cant . I shoot a Browning unsingle and it has improved my scores...AA 25.5

 

I have shot top singles and Model 12's over the years and had to have an Unsingle because it made sense to me that it would or should eliminate some of the recoil because the barrel would be more in line with a persons shoulder ... I got a really nice MX 2000 combo set and it felt great, only problem was I was never sure if I was going to break a target or not even though I did shoot some decent score with it I never felt comfortable ... I sold it and got an MX 2000/8 Top single combo and I like it much more over all and know for the most part when I will break a target and if not also ... I liked the un single it just was not for me ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

 

My experience was pretty much the same as Bill's. I shot top singles for years, and was suckered into the Unsingle hype. I had a great MX3 that I shot well, but, attended a clinic that told me that I would be able to pick up the targets much faster because of the added viability the Unsingle offered. Bait was out, I bit, and got hooked.... Exit MX3, enter MX15. My scores almost immediately started to plummet, and I was at a loss to understand why. After struggling with it for a year, I sold it and went back to a top single. Here, my scores began to rise back to their previous levels. I finally figured out that there was a definite dis-connect between my eyes and the barrel. My eyes were too far off the barrel to really master the gun. Once I got my eyes back closer to the barrel I felt more comfortable, and confident, with my shots. While some can shoot them, and shoot them well, I feel that "most" shooters can, and will, do better with a top single gun than with the unsingle.... Just my experience

 

I shot some unsingles and some top singles couldn't make up my mind which is better so I bought a mid single a Kolar T/S with the extra high rib.

 

Unsingles will allow many shooters a more upright head on the stock and allow them to see the target better.

 

An un-single does not give a more heads up, what gives a more heads up is a high rib Top Single. I have a sight picture that I shoot regardless of top/un-single, my sight picture is what keeps me on the stock, it is my POI that sets me apart from most shooters, I like an 18-22 inch high shooting Trapgun. Every shooter has his own style of shooting and that is what he likes.
I can shoot either if the POI is to my specs. Whether it is top single, mid single, un-single because I have shot all of them well. I personally do not like a heavy gun, a 8-9 lbs is my choice. A heavy gun slows me down on pointing out my target. And one too light is whippy. Plus I shoot a 14 inch LOP I feel 90% of shooters shoot a Trapgun too long for them, too long makes you shoot behind the targets, too short you are every where, un controlled. I have shot 14 inch LOP for 55 years, first thing I do when I get a new gun is set the LOP, a gun has to fit regardless how expensive the wood is.

The top of the rib and comb, whether an unsingle or or top single determines how high your head is.

For example, the K-80 trap special top single and unsingle both use the same O/U barrel. The stock is the same on both models. No difference where your cheek is mounted to see over the rib.

I think some of us that shoot a top single see the barrel on angles with our non-dominant eye, and use it for reference and don't even realise it, so we'll shoot over 1/4 angles and hard angles with an unsingle. Our eyes bring the barrel up to the bird instead of the rib, especially "off side" angle targets.

It's the only explanation I can justify.

 

A good shotgunner should be able to adapt with just a few rounds.

 

Doc, with all due respect, neither the un-single nor the high rib top single have anything to do with a more heads up shooting style. The position of the head is all determined by the difference between the drop at the comb and the drop at the heel of the buttstock. If you install a stock with a 1 1/2" drop parallel comb on a flat ribbed top single or a high ribbed single, the head position is in the same position, relative to the rib, because the comb and heel measurements are the same, relative to the rib. If you install a Monte Carlo stock with a 1 3/8" drop at comb and a 3" drop at heel, on a flat ribbed top single, your head will be in a far more up-right position than if you install that parallel comb, that I mentioned earlier, on a high ribbed top single.

 

I agree 100%, I just never felt like I knew what I was doing and always was trying to adjust and I probably should of just shot and left well enough alone ... To late now , its been sold and replaced ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

 

Kimber, I call BS. May work for you, but I know more than one guy that is AAA27AA that cannot shoot an unsingle consistantly.

Yes, they work great for some, Harlan for example.
