Side by Side Trapshooting

Are there any decent shooters that shoot a side by side for trap?

 

I don't know. I have never seen anybody shoot a side by side in trap and I have been shooting ATA since 1983.

 

Mostly, SxS shooters compete in Vintager's matches

 

There was a guy who shot a s/s for the Annie's and Protections at the old Phx Club and Ben Avery, he did pretty well with it, but it sure looked out of place with them little shorty (26 inch) barrels and all them high dollars guns on the line ... The gun was so short overall he could not put it in the rack with the other guns ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

 

I've won several trophy's shooting an old Winchester model 24 sxs years ago. It was a field gun and I had to add comb height in order to shoot it at trap and it worked very well for me! That gun has in line strikers and it's a very quick acting shotgun when it comes to pulling the trigger! A 30 inch full/mod. barrels was a target smoker!

Black electrical tape and a modified lady's monthly pad does wonders for adding the necessary comb height!! HAP

 

Ken.... While not too many trap shooters compete with a SXS these days, I remember they were very popular with the live pigeon shooters when I lived in Madrid, Spain in the early 60's. My dad belonged to the Madrid Rod and Gun Club, and on Sundays we would go to the club and he would let me shoot live birds with the "big boys". I shot an AYA 12ga. SxS for them at that time. I would go down over the side of the hill where the rings were, and all of us kids would shoot any birds that got away. At the end of the day, all the birds were cleaned and cooked by the wives, etc. and everyone ate pigeons, drank wine, and talked about the day..... Good times, for sure.

 

Same here as far as clay targets. Used to see one or two when it was the GRAND in Vandalia but I think that was probably just someone shooting it for fun.
Now, as far as pigeons? Some of you guys will remember the two brothers from eastern PA that shot their Model 21's pretty well. The older of the two was the smoothest guy I ever watched.
He took a ride over to this side of the mountains years ago to shoot at a not too large shoot. There was jackpot money left over from shoots that stopped and he found out about it.
NOT the guy you want to see show up.
Him and three or four of the boys from out east. Five of the toughest flyers shooters. Three of them shooting SxS guns.
Two of them Model 21 Traps with Miller triggers. What else is there when it comes to the quintessential Flyers gun.
I do remember the older brother telling the puller" This is going to be quick, so pay attention". Like I said, smooth.

There is a stock maker from Ohio that has shot a Mod 21 SXS on live birds for years. He also did the wood on mine. Recoil due to the lighter weigh usually takes it's toll.

 

Clarence bowman, of Pa is one who shoots a sxs and has quite a collection.

Also, there is a gentleman who shoots at Lower Pottsgrove (Pa)
On Thursday nights. He shoots a 28ga sxs. He is a good shot. He

I have a few side by sides I use to play with at sporting clays. They are everything from .410 through 12. I have a lot of fun with them and they perform very well. Of course, the .410 is for the soft courses. My last 100 doubles trap was with one of my M21's. It took me about 20 targets to get things together, and I lost 4 second birds getting there, but I ran the last 80. That was a whale of a lot of FUN and a lot of people didn't think it was possible.
