i dont know if any of you are into flying but there was a (round the world) competition a few years ago. many signed up and held their breath hoping the (guys who always win) didnt sign up.
well, they did.
many knew they werent going to win, but they raced anyway...just to say they did it.

i think shooting has become the same thing.
its not a competition anymore...its entertainment just to get the selfy in front of the range sign.

When I was a kid of 18 and working in the Homestead works of USS the old timers had a saying meant for anyone that they thought was full of it or actually just boring. They would tell that person to

One thing for sure I was never good enough from the 27 yd. line to ever win anything at the Grand in OH. I left that possibility to real 27 yd, shooters, short yardage wonders, sandbaggers and KY residents. Meanwhile, with payoffs like we're seeing in the present and an almost total lack of option players the game of Trapshooting will never be great enough for some people again. Shoot for trinkets or stay home! My #2 son's collection from last week in VA.

He had a 12:30 tee time on Sunday and a Legion baseball playoff game on Monday so he begged us to head home. He's happy to shoot for trinkets and never worried about how to pay next week's entry fees. Some kids have it better than we ever dreamed.

 

The best sandbagger in the world had pa state written all over him. Fake targets by1 pa gun club.

Doylestown in Bucks Couty PA is not in WV.

 

Brooke County sportsmen’s is.
The BIGGEST sandbagger was Adam Stefkovich, the GAH winner from the 18 yrd line.
And he claimed to shoot most of his targets there.

Shooters who play options!

 

I started in this sport in 1974. The average shooter on a good day could pay for his shooting with his wins. I was always a money shooter. In the mid 90's
the ATA told me I was industry and could not play the options. I obeyed. Then they moved all the money to the highest scores, the average shooter had no chance of even breaking even. The 25's and 50's were out of reach as were all of the other options. The average shooter stopped playing the money.
I was only able to play calcutta purses. The cost of entry fees were a problem for many, they could not afford to play options. Roger C.

 

For me it’s cost and at the club level , mixing in unsportsmanlike shooters puts a sour taste in the mouth .

 

"Unsportsmanlike conduct"-I like that one. Calling dead birds for squad mates is sure getting popular these days. More squads need to be followed and pullers need better instructions on what to do when it occurs.

 

had a guy recently hitting me with ejected shells from his semi auto , I mentioned he should push his rubber band up to stop the shells as I thought he was new , looked me dead in the eye and told me he did it on purpose . He got reported .

Trapshooting is great. Love the sport. I was at the SCTP Championships at the Cardinal Center. Thousands of kids there enjoying the sport!
I think the question put forth is directed towards the ATA. The ATA is not trapshooting. It is only an organization. Only one in nine targets thrown in Ohio (prior to SCTP) is registered.

The ATA product sucks. Yep it sucks. It sucks because of the Delegates the sport has chosen.

Look at the last OH delegate. He never answered FG's questions at the OSTA meeting. And he only had one question. It was easier to remove him from the meeting than answer one question.

The product the ATA is offering now has very little return for the investment. Ohio and PA have Calcuttas that are not registered. Those clubs have to advertise they will be limiting the number of shooters.

The ATA handicap system is broken. The headquarters is in the gun hate state of Illinois. The targets are too easy and the point system promotes cheating and discourages true competition.

Nebraska can get 2,000 kids to a shoot and only 250 adults for the State Championship.

Joe Charnigo from Ohio put together a shoot. There was real money and some great shooters. The OSTA wants control of that now.

The Executive Director of the ATA is making over 200k. What is that getting the ATA?

Recently the winner of the ATA's big handicap event may not have even shot the targets he registered. That event once called "Grand" has problems getting 2,000 shooters. It once had 5,000.

I say move on from the ATA. Trapshooting is great.

 

If thousands of kids shoot the SCTP program for nothing but trinkets and are happy what's the problem?
The clubs in PA I'm aware of have dropped calcuttas for lack of participation. Name one that turns away entries unless it's a 1-trap club in the boondocks!
The delegates are voted on by the members in PA at the annual meeting. You get what you voted for.
The handicap system might need a few more yards but breaking 95% averages on easy target Singles never made anyone a winner. Cheating always occurred and didn't start yesterday. It wasn't too long ago that marathon shooters boosted the target numbers and now it's point chasers.

The answer to the salary of the ATA director being too high is to apply for his job at a substantially lower pay
PA once had 350 squads in the championship Singles and now has closer to 200. Could it be that many of those 150 squad participants are dead?
If you're not happy with the present state of the ATA sit on the sidelines, shoot local shoots and leagues, head to the casino or sit at home with the old lady and listen to her gripe about anything and everything. Then look in the mirror and wonder what happened.

 

There are kids out there in the SCTP that could smash some big scores from their short yardage. Dad doesn't take them to Sparta. Many youth shooters won big monies at Ohio back in the day. The ATA doesn't cater to the money shooters. There isnt much money at the grand. All American points!

As per dawgs question as to who limits shooters. All of the clubs that have advertised their Calcuttas on the site have limited the shoots to around 100 shooters. That gives the 4 trap clubs time for the auction. They are all 4 trap clubs.

The SCTP gave away guns at their events this year. The winner of the Last Person Standing got a nice Browning.

 

The Nebraska adults dont want to shoot with the kids. So the kids leave early. They remember that treatment and dont come back. They shoot for guns. Rewards are as good as the adults. The tourney is set up to make the kids go home. ?great job Nebraska.

Like another person said. The ATA isnt Trapshooting. It is an organization.

 

Explain how the ATA can cater to money shooters!

 

Dump the points system
Remove All American Status.
Move the Grand
Regulate ammo
Fix handicap
Can't turn down reduction
Mandatory purse
Blind squadding

 

FG , The shooter must speak up when targets are being s called for friends also. ADD, NOT LETTING SHOOTERS CHANGE TARGETS TO THEIR LIKING. Educate these young shooters to follow all of the rules of the sport. Force the ATA to enforce the rules of the sport, or resign. Roger C.

I was at the SCTP National Championship all week. Not once did I see a kid or coach ask for a target reset.

 

If ..... "Blind squadding" is taking the first available 'bank' ..... OK ......

If ..... "Blind squadding" is shooting with 4 people you don't know ..... then ..... no thanks ......

Travel ????? distance, pay over a couple of hundred bucks of lunch money ..... to shoot with some who can request yardage and 'try' a release trigger for the first time ..... no thanks .....

 

No blue collar shooters no money.
If the handicap system doesn't work no blue collar shooters.

The ATA doesn't have either now. Remove every delegate. Start fresh.

 

Make trapshooting great again? It’s a great ideal to strive for! But I don’t think we’ll achieve it thru the ATA, PITA, SCTP, or AIM! Personal opinion yours may vary from very little to one helluvalot. Today I attended a backyard grassroots trapshoot. Machine stuck behind a huge round hay bale off down in a local river bottom with a fantastic down range view for seeing a well thrown target! I did not do a head count but head count was high, would’ve been higher but some shooters already had dedicated plans for today. We started shooting Wild Annie’s @ roughly 9am, braked a bit around noon for lunch and a good auction. Resumed shooting. Quit @ roughly 4pm. I shot every round except the non-winners & lady’s rounds. Only won Annie. Never used a buy back in. Did I get several free rides cuz rookies couldn’t hit their arse with both hands starting already on it? Yes! Grand total we raised $7760 that goes to a memorial fund scholarship deal for kids in memory of a great guy that shot a lot of “backyard trap games” and was really good guy in a ton of aspects . Those kind of days need to be the future of the game!
In this neck of the midSouth woods and redneckville, outside of a special 4th of July shoot and monthly or weekly “club shoots” trapshooting was a great and still can be a great asset to those in need of raising funds to help those that need it!
I spent 9 hours of my life, roughly $75 in ammo, $26 dollars in entry fees, maybe a half gallon of gas, and lost an entire days work in clearing ground for the trap range am installing. All for a $50 coupon win at a fairly local restaurant. And what did I do with said coupon- I gave it to a special friend that been there for me as I struggled with health issues, seeking a new job, my fathers passing away etc etc. Told him to take his wife out to a nice meal.
What did I get out of today? Fun! Fun! And a lot of fellowshipping with old friends and meeting new very young gentlemen and ladies who will build the fixture of the sport and this country. That trapshooting at its best!

 

ive been doing that kind of shooting since 2010. there is dust on the ata membership forms on my desk at the clubhouse.

 

A youth academy or some highschool competition.
Keep the tradition.
