Got a decent 7 pointer (would have been an 8 if he didn't have a broken tine). Now just looking for the right doe to fill my doe tag.

that means, all we'd need is 3 more unknowns to save the april shoot.

The rifle is a Henry Big Boy in .44 magnum. The load I used was one of my reloads. Speer 270 grain deep curl with 21.5 grains of H110. That rifle is super accurate and I can shoot out to about 125 yards with it before it starts dropping off fast. This buck bedded down 40 yards from my box blind. Never made it out of his bed. You can see my .44 Magnum Taurus Tracker revolver on my chest in the picture. I just put the belt holster on a belt and wear it like that as a makeshift chest holster. So my rifle and sidearm are the same caliber and can shoot the same ammo - like the old west cowboys except theirs was the less powerful .44-40 round. I got my first deer with the revolver last year at 38 yards.

 

the fellow from ark is down in mt home. 2 hrs max.
he is going to rattle up some buddies. we may pull this annual apr shoot off afterall.
but don't count on him to carry the burden.

There are some references above to this being the last shoot & hoot at VCPF? Bob, I know you’ve threatened this on several occasions but is this for real? Vanzant is a ways from the “mitten” but if this is for real I’ll have to find a way to make it? Junior and I shoot as a team but he’ll be in the South China Sea. Might be just a lone dog……

to answer your question.....this is it if we dont get 10.
theres no business. cant justify driving 3000 miles round trip for 4 guys. the shoot doesnt even pay the gas and lodging.
no one shoots anymore around here.
the economy clamped down on spendable income for many.
no one has fun money to spend on travel, food, ammo, and shooting.
the time and money it takes to prep the range for just 2 days....doesnt justify the results.
wind blew down my night lightpole. night birds are toast.
that alone will be a few thousand to fix.
common sense says...no income = no budget to fix things.
lawn care costs more than the shoot nets.
sadly, its not the full 2 day program anymore.
oct is already toast.
just my faithful 5 are still coming. very rarely do we get new blood anymore.

i dont load federals anymore.

we only meet once a year now, so if theres something we can deal with..apr is the time to do it.

he is spreading the word down in ark and may get some guys to come along. if so, the shoot is saved, and you all will need to bring an assigned dish. itll be the first pot luck in 7 years.

 

we are so close to having a true meet.

if we get the 10th person, i will book a table at the rockbridge trout farm instead of club 60 this year.
its a little classier, and would be more appropriate to celebrate the accomplishment.

I want to share this with my friends.
ive had some shooters offer to buy a (ghost ticket) to achieve 10 people.
as we did in the past, the ticket would remain on the counter and if anyone walked in who wanted to shoot, theyd get a free pass compliments the donor.

as kind as it was to offer, I must decline.

the reason is, the purpose of achieving 10 isn't to net income.....its to get bodies to come to the sport/range. for those who took time to visit my website and learn the purpose and mission statement of VCPF, youd know its to promote the sport, not to make money. if I depended on surviving off this range, I would have starved 12 years ago.

so thank you to those who offered, but 10+ bodies are what we need to keep this venue alive.

and even with 10 signed up, 14 years of range stats and bookkeeping show.....33% will no show.
that means 3 wont make it. and if 3 or less don't make it....the VCPF shoot and hoots go away forever.

so, do your part to bring friends. so far jeff is in the lead with 2.

bob L has a meeting in the afternoon, so he will be bowing out at lunch. it also means the only other lady at the shoot isn't going to be there, leaving my wife as the only one to set up and wash up.
so, if you have a 10th + hopeful, lets get him now.

I am bringing 4 guns to shoot - 3 O/U and 1 SxS - all doubles. Leaving the semi auto at home this trip. I know switching back and forth may not be the best thing for my shooting scores but I like to shoot all my guns so I tend to switch back and forth.

 

Weather forecast looking good. Bright & sunny. Temps @ 80---really ? I'm leaving Durango on Wednesday----Staying at a friend's home Wen nite, Thursday drive to Pratt, KS. Friday to Vanzant.

I'm not sure on the dinner. I may try & get an early start on the trip home.

Brian---- please bring extra tick spray. I want to use something that works this year. I hate them buggers.

Sorry everyone. I just got checked into the hospital. Low hemoglobin. More than likely will be getting 2 units of blood in the morning. My kidneys no longer produce the stuff that tells my bone marrow to make more red blood cells. I was afraid this would happen. I've been fighting this for over a year.
