So I get a letter in the mail today from the ATA that they are holding my final pay-out check till I send a W-9 back to them. Well you just keep that dam $56.00 dollars.
I have a W9 in my hand so I know what it looks like. I thought the W9's only kicked in at $600.00. I don't want to know the total you won, but maybe? that last $56.00 put you over the threshold and now they have to report it? It sucks that they do that, and I am in NO WAY siding with the crooks at the ata, but it is what it is and I sure as heck wouldn't let them keep my money, I wouldn't care if it was $1.00 Send them the form and get YOUR money
I was cashing them in [and buying shells..lol]up thru Friday. The $600.00 threshold is bullshit anyway.....
I assume that you are aware the government couldn’t convict Al Capone of murder for his involvement in the Valentines Day massacre, but they were ble to convict him of tax evasion. I would send the tax form.
The W-9 has the tax payer information that the payer, ATA in this case, will use when reporting the winnings to the IRS and W-2G (or 1099) that will be sent to the payee, shooter in this case. Though, if the annual winnings doesn't total $600 or more for the year, they are not required to report.
Take the $56.00. file the 1099 form on your taxes. List your self as a part time pro trap shooter, and deduct your shooting expenses. Roger C.
