All of us are as old or older than Brad. We're tired and some of us have actually managed organizations (gun clubs) in the past and know what's involved. Remember, Brad had the job once before and if anyone asked him again I'd say he'd say forget it. I've been wrong before.
Young and stupid is pretty normal but it's best to find someone young and eager with proper guidance on his back at all times. I think Brad might be too tired for even that.
As a young man with no prior tournament director experience in my opinion he did a pretty good job seeing over some rather large trapshoots. So now at this point in time being a more mature and experienced person pray tell me why he couldn't do the job if he would choose to take on a job such as this? It seems to me that some of the posters on here are quite like a bunch of old biddies hanging over the back fence trying to pigeon hole the new neighbor who just moved in across the street. Just my opinion Dave Berlet
When Brad was TD at the CC, he asked me to make an announcement about the Ohio State Shoot. I made the announcement on an old worn out place. I was immediately booted for promoting anything Cardinal. Two months later, while we were with Brad’s crowd of All Americans, Brad announced to the group that I got the boot. That was when I told Brad and his laughing pals it was no big deal. I was going to build our own site “An Open Forum about Trapshooting”.
Brad taunted me in front of his pals. He asked what I knew about building a website. I said, “nothing yet, but i will by January.” The first two folks I told we were up and running was Flyer and Doc. Merlo, brought it up! Could it be Brad has an announcement to make?
wow. a lot going on beyond my scope of understanding here. ill stick to little venues like my place! anyone wanting to come to my place and let me and my wife run my meet, where all we do is complain about too much food and too many good times, let me know! look at my avatar to the left. peace and tranquility. thats what we push. small, personal, and good old 3 hole trap. i hope im not booted for making an announcement!
as to the age thing, im thinking along the lines of pullers that dont shoot, thus they dont understand the game. if someone young is a top notch shooter and knows the game, and wants to improve the sport, why not give them the reigns? and, wise old timers should guide and direct as needed. thats why corporations have boards of (directors). ya know...guide and direct? just my 2 cents. btw...kudos to joe.
dont feel bad joe.....i got the boot too, for warning people that covid was moving west and that youth team directors should reconsider sending kids in cramped vans to shoots. i was accused of causing panic. 2 weeks later, it hit the west hard. it may have got me the boot, but i go to bed thinking i saved lives when it all first was upon us in 2020.
Isn’t discrimination based on age a big no-no when it comes to hiring? My mom always told me we are only as old as we feel. Maybe Merlo can give Brad a squeeze and let us all know how old he feels. What type of tournament would Brad be directing? Euchre, corn hole, hunt trial, pigeon shoot, beer drinking (well past his prime for this one). Merlo needs to give us more info before we can answer his question. The Memorial golf tournament is this week in Dublin, Ohio. Is Brad going to be the tournament director for the PGA’s Memorial tournament? If so, will the PGA require Brad to dress appropriately and wear his hat with the bill facing forward? So many questions yet to be answered!
age by itself is a discriminating trait. but age and untrained or uneducated youth isnt. case in point...the dumbing down of america where higher education is made easier and those that arent educated properly or worthy to fill higher skilled jobs get it. the younger you are, the less youve been exposed to unique situations, and have less practice dealing with it. thus the reason the military puts a high priority on training. 1. to ensure they are all up to the task, and 2. to weed out those only worthy of peeling potatoes. book smart is one thing, hands on boots on ground is another. id rather have someone whos been dirtied by being in the fight, than a google smart person. and trust me, there are too many of them around for my comfort in this new world.
For the record Joe got kicked off the kool aid site twice that same Ohio State Shoot, once for reporting for me that Ohio wouldn't have target requirements because the ATA was so far behind on posting shooters records on the targets that they had shot that year and second for giving an up to date blow by blow report on the Grudge Match. I pointed out to him that I had never been kicked off the KOOL AID site and still haven't been to my knowledge but in fairness I haven't looked at that site since this one was started. When Joe was complaining about being booted I asked him what he was going to do about it, I'd say this web site was a good answer. The other thing is I'm going to be at the CC semi bright and early on Wednesday to help out as the TD for the buckeye. I've been told that there will be a whole herd of SCTP kids there on Saturday. If you are at the shoot look me up I'll be around the entree building most of the time, or riding around on a cart checking things out.
I remember that quite well. You said I was going to be a moderator and I said I didn’t think I wanted to do that. I only agreed because I read somewhere that the site was going to last only 30 days.
Hey, I thought this was an open forum. Why was a sentence about Brad and Merlo vacationing together this week deleted from my post?
As per original question…..Is Brad too old? After 3 days the old wagon is looking kinda rough. Disheveled and showing a bit more gray maybe. Most definitely grouchier. But he is still moving with two days left. Too ugly for pictures. I might sneak one in.
Case in point -- Brad would make a great tournament director --Has the wisdom of age - and and the years not to put up with the bull ---- -- want-Abes - and cry babies -- you run in to at todays shoots-
It’s time the Cardinal have a professional in charge with the Shooters in mind. Brad is a great choice
I'll be there to TD the Cardinal Classic but the CC needs some young blood and I have no interest in the job. I'll be sure to give my opinion though to who ever Dan and Jake get. First thing that's needed is pitch the radar guns and go back to T bars and 50 yard stakes. The 50 yard stakes vanished sometime between 2015 and 2022. Also do not let every squad reset the traps to suit themselves. Another key don't worry about keeping the target below the screen top. If anyone cares to check the second panel idea is shot to hell when you look at the height of that second panel on the east banks compared to the far west banks. Besides no where in the rule book dose it say "set the target height using the second panel." We did set the targets a little stronger and a smidge higher. I think Jake is going to give me those 50 yard markers by the CC.
100% agree with paragraph 2. on the fence with paragraph three as I prefer a lower target. That said, the dbls last week were the most consistent Ive seen in yrs at Marengo.
Please reconsider and take the Job , and get the help you need to get the job done . The shooters need YOU
The Cardinal Center Staff has a lot of experienced people there. Many of them have been around for years. I didn't really have to do much. The CC trap setters know how to set good targets but what I saw was management must have gotten into a woke appeasement idea of just letting the shooters set their own targets anyway they wanted, higher or lower and before long no one new how the trap had been set in the first place. I told the setters if any shooter bitched send them to me, no resets unless the target was obviously out of specks, and that is hard do do. The things I try and do is follow the rule book, back up the help, let the line supervisors take care of the normal, talk to the shooters, and then be able to make a decision when needed. Even though I know so many shooters I can't be a friend when a rule is a rule so no exceptions can be made.
Brad has been through a lot these last few years, supervising he can handle, but Vision has been giving him some setnbacks W/ Macular Degeneration, i personally feel he can handle the job w/trained personnell as his back ups, he knows all the rules, If you feel like it Brad Go For it. GB............................................DLS
I caught a picture of Brad working the crowd. As per the age question. He kept wandering off in his Tournament Director's Cart. He always found his way back.
