Well, Harlan shot a 72 in singles yesterday @ the southern grand, Time to dump those lousy Winchesters he's been shooting.
I'm in my 5th month of recovery from spinal fusion L1-S1--I'll be lucky to shoot again in 6 more months.
Be happy you don't have the HEATH issues that Mr. Campbell Has. I will say no more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I looked at his scores yesterday and today. A health issue was the first thing that came to my mind. I saw a picture of him earlier this year and he appears to have lost a significant amount of weight. Losing large amounts of weight isn't necessarily a voluntary thing. I have been privileged to speak with Harlan on several occasions. He is always willing to share information and he is a great ambassador to the sport. I for one will be praying that whatever may be ailing him will soon be gone.
Fundamentally he’s as good as anyone on the planet ! Definitely a health issue for sure. Whatever the problem is I’m hoping he will overcome it and be back to shooting like we all know he can.
I can remember one year when no one on my squad at the Silver Dollar (Including me) broke in the 90's in a singles event. The next day we broke a 500 X 500. Florida can be real mean if your sick or healthy.
I shot on the bank/squad next to Harlan, 9&10, wind was throwing the targets all over the place. Harlan has lost a lot of weight, I can't believe his shooting has not been impacted because of weight loss alone.
After reading kolarpoles reply, I believe my attempt @ humor was totally out of line. 50 lb weight loss, doesn't fair well unless its intentional. Hope Harlan, isn't in need of prayers.
I noticed after yesterday's singles he withdrew from the handicap competition. Something definitely isn't right.
I talked to him yesterday he has cataracts, a stigmatism and other eye dominance issues. He is trying to fit surgery into his very busy clinic schedule. He is down 75 lbs and has been fighting these issues for a long time. I have no doubt you will see him back shooting great again.
Well, two weeks ago he told me he had bad cataracts and isnt sure if and when he is going to try and have something done with them. Mike
If he is in Fl--St.Lukes Eye -Dr. Kimberly Ireland is the best--she's in THE VILLAGES--did my wife's and my cataracts
I had them like many others. Finally had both done and a vitrectomy done in my left eye. I'm a one eyed shooter. Had I not had the surgery, I wouldn't be shooting today. Had a floater in the center of my left eye that blocked out the target. Best thing I ever did.
Cataract surgery is about as easy as ingrown toenail surgery. Sounds like he needs a good eye doctor who'd recommend a Toric lens to eliminate astigmatism along with the cataracts. He might be scared..
So Ljutic,I have floaters in both eyes.Seems like I am looking through a grey screen door.I am probably raising my head to see the bird better.Tell me about what to do about the floaters. Thanks,Mike
With Harlan losing that much weight rapidly, it could be Diabetes. Happened to a friend that was a golfer. He was scratch and got to where he couldn't shoot a decent round. had a blood chemistry profile done and found the diabetes. Went straight on the needle. Got it squared away
I had the same thing done but the right eye instead. Cataracts was bad enough that I was seeing double on everything. Dr wanted to wait as long as possible as I have only one eye. Had the cataract done and then last year the vitrectomy last year. best thing I ever done. Most eye surgeons won't do a vitrectomy for just floaters but some will. I'd check with your eye Dr.
Harlan wasn't the only All American that put his gun up! The Silver Dollar brings new meaning to the old phrase "if the wind is in your face leave the gun in the case"............. WL
Doesn’t sound very All American. They aren’t money shooters. Great job ATA leaders. Shooting for points is for pussies.
From my first year of ATA in 1974 until my last year in 2011 I never ever put my gun away because of the wind or the weather. In all those years I can only recall not making the bell for one event, at the Illinois state shoot in 1997. That day I was just to sick. I shot some real shitty scores in the wind but won a whole bunch of money in the wind too. If I planned on shooting or told my squad I was shooting I shot. After about 1986 the wind was my best friend. Once I figured out that no matter how windy the day someone was going to be high gun and that just might as well be me. Attitude will take you a long way in trap shooting, or life. I have to agree with Union Strong's post. The All American's that I shot with would take it like a man for the most part and the one's that didn't Leo and I would make fun of. Respect was earned not given back in the day. I'll direct you to the thread about fat men and heavy guns for more of my thoughts on this subject. I fully understand if any shooter has an eye problem for stopping but that should happen with or without a wind. A physical problem is one thing but a MENTAL problem with too hard of targets and too fragile an ego is another.
Perhaps I misread WL’s post. I thought the implication was there were other All-Americans other than Harlan who didn’t shoot the Southern. From what I saw casually tracking the scores, that wasn’t the case but I could be wrong.
St. Lukes in Tarpon springs Fl, Dr Pit Gil did my wifes eyes. She couldn't be happier. His father started St. Luke. He is one of the best.
The last two years on Sunday championship day at the Nevada State Shoot, the was a lot of wind. You couldn't hardly get in the gate Sunday morning because so many motor homes were pulling out before the handicap. Many were All Americans, many were just cowardly shooters. I miss the days when shooters like Brad Dysinger stood in there and shot no matter what the weather was like.
Clayman, I was there that year (LOVE the Nevada State Shoot!!)...I did not shoot that day because the minute I stepped out of the car my ankles got sandblasted...literally. I chose not to shoot that day because I was afraid of the damage the sand would do to my gun, not the damage to my average. I can imagine I was not the only one with that same reason for not shooting. SD
You make a valid point, SD. We have to look out for our guns. However, I was shooting a high end Perazzi and it came through fine. Come on back this year. We guarantee good weather!
Per the latter part of Clayman's post above........ -------I miss the days when shooters like Brad Dysinger stood in there and shot no matter what the weather was like.------- I especially miss watching Brad shoulder whatever gun he was shooting in bad weather. Noting, from my memory on the bad weather days he mounted and shot the gun just exactly like he did with the 72 degree temp with & no wind days! WL
Brad did not mind the wind and rain, how ever he did not like to stand in ankle deep water to shoot. One year at Vegas he got a skid to stand on so he would get his sneekers wet. Do you remember this Brad? Roger C.
