Glad To See Hunting Forum

Joe I hope this hunting forum works out, I used to post on facebook but pulled my page down because of their anti gun anti conservative ways. I don't know about todays' trap shooters but back when I started a majority of them were hunters. Trap Shooting is what a lot of us did in the off season of bird hunting.

I am rummaging around trying to find some old hunting pictures to post. I hope some newbie shooters and hunters could get some useful info on shells and guns to use from us old timers. Trap Shooters have a lot of collective knowledge about shotguns, loads. and such. I'm sure if asked they would love to share.

I've always said I was a hunter that shot trap IN THE OFF SEASON.

 

Great pictures, Tell us about your hunting setup.

 

Most trap shooters I knew back in the day were hunters and most I shoot with today still are. I can remember the day I shot with a fellow on my squad at the The 88th Grand (1987) and got chatting and discovered he wasn't a hunter. That was the first time I met a trap shooter that didn't hunt. Man was I some shocked! I just assumed all trap and skeet shooters hunted as I hadn't known otherwise growing up in that kind of environment and area (northern Ontario) where very few did not hunt. Hunting is my first love, especially waterfowl. Always has been, always will be....It's the reason I moved to Alberta though my wife believes it was for work!!.

 

Ann and I spent a month in Manitoba each fall for about 5 years before kids hunting on Orville Minish's farm at Swan Lake who was a trap shooter we met in Fla one winter. Great times we had there shooting ducks and geese, grouse and chickens, most of my trap shooting friends are hunters. Thanks for the pictures.

My hunting preserve is located in Paulding County Ohio about 100 miles North of Vandalia. You can see my web page from this site. We've been at it for 25 years now, coming up on number 26.

 

I remember seeing you shooting at the Grand in '87. It was my first time there. I was 22 then and in my second season of trap shooting. I don't recall how but at the start of the '99 season I came into possession of a VHS instructional tape put out by you and Leo. I watched that tape over and over until I wore it out and started practicing and following the instructions you two laid out. By the end of that season at the 100th Grand I ended up tied with and shooting off against Leo in the Preliminary Handicap Championship from my assigned yardage of 25.5 yds. That tape helped propel me from A Class to AA in singles and to tge 27 yd line that year at the conclusion of Grand Week and helped me to shoot my pb of 6-100 straights in a single season that year.

 

Thank You Hasbeen for the complement, for Leo I'll say thanks too. Him and me spent some time ourselves in Duck Blinds over the years. I'll try and dig up some pictures. I've always said that the best trap shooters were hunters first for one big reason we could adapt to the target if it was a little off perfect.

I've got a little more gray in my hair now than I did in 87, but a least I still have hair. Again thanks. Keep up with hunting stories on here. I think there are a lot of OLD duck hunters here. Maybe you can instill some knowledge on some 22 year old that wants to pay attention to us OLDSTERS.

 

Lol, yes I still have some hair left and what is left gets more grey each season. Waterfowl hunting was and always will be my first love until I can go no longer.
I spent many a day in blinds with guys who tried to turn it into a shooting competition or weren't happy unless there were limits for every guy on the hunt even if it meant they shot more than they were allowed to get there. For me it was about the experience of the hunt and time shared with friends and family. As I've aged I have really taken to making my hunts more simple and hunt solo alot or with my wife or a very few close friends. I shoot only a 20ga now over small reslistic spreads and don't shoot birds any more that aren't feet down or hovering over the decoys. By the sounds of it based on your posts you and I would get along very well in a blind and on the trap range.
