I just started shooting skeets and clay pigeons this year and i suck at it., I have a remington 11-87 12 gauge with interchangeable chokes, But I am in search of a good Over and Under. What would be the best I shoot ? I dont know if a semiauto would be good enough in terms of reliability Thanks for any reply!
This ..... .... would be my choice, as a 4-barrel set. But, if price matters, you may want to give a range of what you are willing to invest.
Look for a used Superposed or a Beretta. Probably in a better price range and every bit as serviceable as the high end guns.
A Beretta 391 is what I would use but the gun is really up to the individual. It's an individual's choice. Fit, weight and barrel length all play into the equation of what one may think is the best gun for them.
Lots of American and International skeet targets have been broken with the Remington 3200. The ones I've seen for sale lately have been bargains. There have been updates which can be done to them, but many have already been updated especially if they were shooters. If you want choke tubes, Briley can do them but they have told me that they must be very accurately done. 3200's were built in Skeet, Trap and Field configurations with many barrel lengths.
Most guys will say look for a solid Superposed or Citori with SK/SK chokes and +/- 28" barrels, and that is good advice. About thirty years ago I switched to a parallel comb Monte Carlo(1-1/2" drop) trap stock on my old Superposed. That's all I'm saying. Think about it. Start teaching yourself the "leads." You'll be fine.
Your 1187 is a fine gun for skeet, #1 get a skeet choke #2 make sure when you mount the gun it shoots where you are looking, if it does not shoot where your looking adjust the comb till it does(don't have an adj. comb, get one installed) #3Learn proper leads, look points, hold points and foot position(get Bender, Mayes, Giambrone or other tapes and watch them again and again 4#Enjoy your success at skeet
The 32oo Remington is the best gun under $2000 you will find. The next step up would be a Kolar, Krieghoff or a Perazzi I would choose a 3200 or Krieghoff.
You can find a used Citori SK/SK for under 2K and they are rock solid as well. My 1979 has 150K through it and I have not had to replace a part from wear or breakage..just PM.
It all depends what your goals are. If you want to shoot very,very good you would need serious gun like Beretta, Perazzi or Krieghoff.
Probably one the the Browning Crossovers. Priced right. 30" barrels would do nicely for sporting if you want a multitasker.
Berettas Autos work very well. Just give them 10 mins of TLC after each couple hundred rounds and they will work. About $900 -$1200 would get you a good used one that will outlive you if maintained. I own a 390, 391, and abn A400 xcel. Will be parting with one of them , cant shoot them all and score well!
I don't think skeet requires any spl. gun , what little I have done I can do ok with about any field gun that has a open choke.
Your 1187 is a great starter gun for shooting skeet as long as you have a skeet choke. It’s a soft shooting gun and you do not have big money invested.Its also very reliable as long as you clean it regularly. If there’s guys at the club you shoot that use an over and under tell them your thinking about and over and under and if you could shoot a few stations with theres.I,m thinking almost all of them would say sure.There no magic in any gun it takes time and practice to improve.Theres many very good shoots that use an automatic.
Your best bet is to go to your gun club and try out all your friends. They will let you try their guns freely. Just be sure to shoot factory shells and not your reloads. Just a courtesy. Most will let you try theirs and will help in making your decision.
Spend your money on ammo and lessons till you get a foot hold. Spending a ton of money on a different gun wont do anything but put you back in the learning curve. Learn to shoot, figure out how you like to shoulder and hold the gun so when you do move up to a better gun you can be accurately fit. Be a student of the game, throwing money at it wont give you a bit more talent.
I am not a skeet shooter by any ones farthest reach of their imagination,(being as I shoot trap all the time) I picked up a Remington 1100 skeet gun off the rack that I had never laid eyes on before and the 3 rd round I ran the 25 straight ... If I were to be in the market for a skeet gun, that is what I would buy and make it shoot where I am looking ... They been around a long time, are reasonably priced, and reliable if you take care of it ... Parts are cheap and available, you can re build one in 10 minutes if anything breaks ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
One that shoots best for you. I wouldn`t buy any shotgun until I shot it with good results. Good luck.
Find a nice used O/U sporting clays gun with an adjustable comb. It’s a compromise setup but will allow you to shoot all the clay sports Until you find what you really like. Used beretta dt10’s can be found for a decent price.
I am not a skeet shooter but yrs. Ago I shot a little, had a friend that shot a browning 425 30 inch barrels and 28ga. Tubes the balance was perfect for me. If I were to shoot,that's what I would look for.
Try different friends' guns if possible, as long as they fit ok, and shoot. Some prefer autos, some O/U models. You will know when you've found the right combination. Just my .02 cents worth.
if youre young and dont mind bending over to pick up hulls, stay with a semi, otherwise o&u is for you. but being the post is 5 years old, odds are hes an old man with o&u by now! lol.

Not true at all. My A400 has been super reliable and I rarely clean her. I probably should clean it more often but because it always works I rarely do I hear what your saying though. Probably best to clean after each match or every 1000 rounds fired
This! All that glitters is not gold. I went through about $20k of tubed O/U's before realizeing that I shoot 1100's better than anything. Technique and fundamentals matter most!
1100 is great for breaking birds -- terrible for shell recovery-Club requires us to pick up empty shells. and if you are shooting with a squad of double gun shooters, They will start grumbling .
I am very pleased with my Browning Citori Ultra XS 30" I shoot Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays with it and it works great for me.
Don't think you need any special gun for skeet, my wife shot for yrs with an 1100 skeet, easy to work on, parts are inexpensive, I liked the Winchester super X , if you have plenty of $$ I would buy a Kreighoff crown grade.
I've had Remington 1100s that went into the hundreds of rounds with NO failure to cycle and fire and the newer Beretta shotguns, the A400 models, will go close to a thousand (not recommended, just a test report). I owned at least a dozen Beretta gas guns and they all went into the high hundreds with no problems. The only gas guns I ever had a problem with were the Browning Golds. They weren't horrible, just not as reliable as the Beretta guns. I actually shot my Beretta's as well or better than my high end O/U guns by a small margine over time. I don't think you could go wrong with one.
Browning Citoris seem to be pretty popular at my club I go to. They come in 3 different models. The CX or "crossover" does well at everything with a 60/40 POI. I did well shooting my Browning CX with 30" barrels for skeet as well as great scores in trap. I've only had the gun a few months so it's not like I'm extremely used to it, it just does well across the board. Note: the citori does have heavier barrels, so I would lean more towards 30" rather than 32s if you plan to shoot mainly skeet. I have a CZ Sporter model which is the best shotgun I have ever used. I’m a CZ fan in general and any of their over/under would be fine. You can get some basic models for $500 or so like the Drake or Redhead.
