Illegal straw purchase for SCTP youth? OH MY!!

Discussion in 'Trapshooting Forum - Americantrapshooter.com' started by SCTP Parent KY, Mar 5, 2018.

  1. What happens if I buy a gun from Dick's for my youth child for SCTP? Is that an illegal straw purchase? What if I am in a state that doesn't allow 18-21 year olds to buy a gun? Are all guns bought for SCTP shooters then illegal?

Of course not. Just because an individual isn't old enough to purchase a gun doesn't mean he's not old enough to own or fire one. Most states allow long guns to freely transact between members of the immediate family.

If I remember correctly, the instructions for the first question on the 4473 "are you you buying this for yourself" states you may buy it as a gift as long as the receiving party is otherwise allowed to possess (sic?) a firearm. It would be interesting to see how that would be interpreted.

Do yourself a favor and don't even mention that the gun is for your son/daughter. If you can, have them shoot one of the other kids guns to see if they like it and can shoot it, then go to dicks( that is the right name) and purchase that brand. You know the difference in wood so ask them to show you a few( if they even have more than one) then when you get it home give it to your child. If you decide to take your young shooter into dicks don't hand them the gun and ask something like " so kiddo, how's that fit ya".
Good luck with your purchase. Hope the youngster shoots YOUR gun well

You can google the stories about clerks thinking an adult is buying for a minor and the results. NO SALE!

Sure, the ATF has nothing better to do than chasing parents for purchasing shotguns for their children. Please provide exactly ONE instance where action was taken!

Dawg, I don't think the ATF would be involved unless something bad happened with the firearm. I never had a bad experience with them. In fact one of our club members was the head honcho in the Pgh. back then and any time I had to call they were more than helpful. I only had my license 20 years. Gave it up in 2009

My advise was for the guy going into DICKS. The people behind their counters, one day shoes the next day the gun counter, are not the most knowledgeable. All it takes is for one "firearms expert" (manager) to try and show the noob behind the counter all about selling firearms.

As far as "action taken"? Not by the ATF but by the store owner. There is a store here in Pgh. that the local news goes to every time there is talk of more restrictions. They are well known and sell a large amount of both handguns and long guns. The place has been there forever. The original owner passed away and the new people kept the name because it was so well known. And that was YEARS ago.

I was in there one day and a women was asking about a certain pistol and took some pictures on her phone. She apparently sent these to someone. When she said she would take the gun at his price he told her he wouldn't sell it to her because he was suspicious and thought she MIGHT be buying it for someone else. For all we knew she might have doing just that. But then again maybe she wanted it for self defense and she was sending them to her husband to clarify it was the one he thought she should buy.

The ATF didn't have to take any action. They had the dealers so skittish that even if it was for her they didn't want to take a chance THEY would be on the hook.

Go somewhere else to buy any gun! If they won't sell ARs why buy anything from them!

Well since we’re stuck in the People’s Republik of Kalifornistan. When our kids turned 18, for their birthday we sent off Interfamilial Transfers for both kids. They can’t buy a Handgun in Kalifornistan until they’re 21 but they can be “GIFTED” it at 18 so they got their TRAP GUN, EVIL BLACK RIFLE and a S&W M&P40 given to them for their Birthday. About 3 to 4 weeks later they got a letter from the State saying Happy Belated Birthday you’re now a gun owner.

And we don’t shop at Dick’s anymore because their Dicks.
