Was it 5000 shooters that shot the GAH the last year in Vandalia? On 70 fields, and Sparta only had 1978 shooters to utilize 100+ fields?
If the EC does not get it right in the next couple of years, the C C will not need more fields to hold the GRAND. Roger C.

In 1999 the 100th grand they had 5000shooters shot on 24 banks with I think 12 practice traps.

    Garry,

I play with Google Earth when I really bored. Lately, I've been looking for new Pyramids.

Search up Sparta and you can count them very easily. Same is true about Cardinal.

199 Grand was packed, people everywhere as it was the 100th anny. Charlton Heston was there I believe. I know I seen him at the Grand & I think it was the 100th. Still have 2 flats of AA marked 100th Anny Grand American.

Zimmie I think it was 24 banks and 4 practice traps. I think Vandalia had 100 traps at the end.

I have a picture of me and Leo taken in front of the Big Sign that used to be the center of the grand and it says 32 trap fields west, 32 trap fields east and I think those included the practice. Back then we put on our big boy shoes and moved several fields over so we shot the whole line, East or West. We didn't pick our banks, traps, or direction east or west. They drew directions each event. Had a damn lot more shooters then too.

That 2005 program is correct, but before 05 there were more traps. Many were removed from the west end. Bring Vandalia up on google earth and use the go back in time feature and you can see 2005 and before.

Vandalia had 24 banks, Sparta has 27

Vandalia had 100 traps, 96 program and four practice.

2005 had fewer banks than in previous year. That is why the numbers were low that year for all events. some people didn't want to chance showing up and not being able to shoot. I myself showed up and had my gun serviced and enjoyed the atmosphere of the final grand in Vandalia.

Ron that is a later version of the one I have a picture of. That one is from sometimes in the 80's after they added traps.Mine is from 78.

Sparta has 121 trap fields. There are 27 program banks (108 traps). That leaves 10 practice, 1 demo field, and two fields for special events. 4 banks are on the west end and 23 banks on the east end. 24 of the traps on the west end are on skeet field overlays.

Yes and they are all well used.

If the ATA used all of the trap fields on any given event they could start at 9 AM and finish by Noon ... This would give the attendees a lot of extra time to explore the general area and see all of the wonders in the southern part of Illinois besides Wal Mart ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Thank you for a true observation even though the intent was to be sarcastic. Still not answering my question about the decline in OSTA revenues from 3/4 million to 43k...or did I miss it?

It has been transferred to the FOUNDATION. The OSTA has a foundation. It has been stashed in the FOUNDATION. The money is no longer needed in the OSTA. The revenues were NEVER 3/4 of a million, that number is a total, from forever, NOT ONE YEAR. I'm starting to think you are dense. YOU MISSED IT.

Just curious.....5000 shooters at the Vandalia grand....was this a year after year occurence or only at the 100 anniversary?

A 1 time occurrence. But A Average Year At Vandalia Was About 2x What Was Shot At Sparta This Year.

1999 had 5,000 shooters at the GA Handicap. I know, I was there. It'll take more than two Spartas to get there again.

Not too bad of a decline considering all the shooters we've likely lost since 2001 and earlier. Truthfully I would be shocked if ANY club had recorded the same or similar number of shooters 20 years ago as they do today for a given state shoot or satellite grand of sorts.

HOLY SH!T! I would have never guessed the PA State Shoot would have more shooters than Ohio!!! But they are pretty far east, guess they get all the shooters from the northeast. Good info!!
