On a serious note. I hate to see that kind of thing. I can just imagine what must have been going through his mind when it let loose. That kind of experience could stop a young man from ever going hunting again. I hope everyone was OK.

Years from now it will be one of those, "You ain't goin to believe this" stories but for those first few seconds I doubt anyone was smiling.

 

Looks like he tripped, got mud in the barrel and didn't realize it.

All we can do is speculate. I would think if the barrel was plugged at the muzzle the rupture would have been near there instead of where it appears it was, just in front of the forearm. Looks like a red Winchester in his left hand. Duck and wigeon calls around his neck. A fun day gone bad in an instant.

Heck, we don't even know if the guy holding the shotgun was the one that pulled the trigger. THAT guy might have been hurt.

 

They were deer hunting according to the story .... The first shot was a dud. Not much noise. Second shot.....

 

Thanks, I just "assumed", and yes I know what that means, by the camo clothes, what looks like waders on the guy standing, and the calls they were duck hunting. I never hunted deer with calls and a dog but I guess there are places that do that.

 

It looks to me like the shell in his left hand is a high brass shotshell.

The one that launched its mag spring and plug right out of the canoe when the guy removed the mag cap? Single shot 1100.

Or the one that froze up and had to be doused with hot coffee to get it to open? Better than the other hot liquid that was the next choice.

Or the best of the best. The one that went overboard when those two rookies capsized their boat in 6 feet of swamp and a few days later was hooked with the opened pin of a hunting license duct taped to a paddle.

Who woulda thunk it. A loaded shotgun while still submerged, WILL go off when the trigger is pulled. Good thing the balance point makes the muzzle point down when you hook one inside the trigger guard. People would be surprised at what swamp water (tannic acid) does to Bluing after just a few days. Remington could have used that one in a promo. Took a dunkin, but kept on workin.

And the two guys that went overboard? Never did come back to look for the 1100. I'll bet our buddy that hooked it still has it and that was 42 years ago.

My first thought was that he pulled the trigger on a steel load that had gotten wet and corroded together.

 

Naw, that wouldn't have resulted in that rupture.

 

He may have something else to worry about.
