3 cyl. yanmar was run out of fuel twice. Have bled filter housing while replacing filter. My question is when bleeding lines at the injector nozzle b-nuts do I open the compression release lever to keep the engine from starting with a line open? Thanks.

No, leave compression lever in start position. I usually put a battery charger on the unit so while you are bleeding, it keeps turning. You want the engine to start. Usually its a 17mm open end wrench to bleed injectors. Start at injector closest to beginning of fuel rail and while cranking, crack the injector line (at top of injector) until you get solid fuel, NO bubbles. Close and go on to next till end, by then it should start if filter and fuel tank are full. I used to lay a rag under fuel line to keep mess down. If you are not getting fuel, your fuel solenoid may be bad. Hope this helps. Steve

Agree with Steve completely. Also you might do it a little while then pause so starter doesnt get hot if it takes too long.Mike

Thank you both Mike and Steve. Will get together with my son this weekend and see if it comes back to life with your help. Seems these things always happen just after the dump truck drops off 8 yards of topsoil!!!

Let us know how things turn out. Those little Yanmar's are bullet proof, just a PIA when you run them out of fuel. One more thing, if you know fuel system is good, and it won't start, look at smoke stack when you are trying to start, if white smoke is not coming out, look at fuel solenoid, the older ones were always burning out.

I used an auxiliary electric pump to help prime my injectors when we lived on a boat, it pushed right past the lift pump, small electric pump from auto zone--worked well was also good for filling my Racor primary filters, only had to bleed two cylinders

If it starts that’s even better just start tightening the lines up and it will smooth out and be good

Well I had an International that got algae .Had to use algaeicide ? sp. and used a boat fuel tank and line so I could pump clean fuel past the injector pump so I would not burn up the starter.Mike

Had a day tank on the boat, polished all fuel that was going to be used in engines and gen sets prior to moving the boat -did 30,000 miles without ever having a fuel problem--real important had a clear container & checked all fuel before fill the tanks, in the islands you had a risk of getting filthy fuel--went from Nassau, Bahamas-to Ft. Lauderdale to clear customs & then to Jacksonville 660 miles / 315 gals --not bad for a 49' trawler--we had a 2000 mile range

Its alive again!! Tractor is a John Deere 950 made by Yanmar. Son and I killed battery trying to bleed at injectors. While recharging I went back to square one and opened two bleed screws at the filter and one I missed at the banjo fitting at the injection pump. Gave it a little pre-heat and she fired right up. Now I have 8 yards of topsoil to move. Thanks to all for your help. Bill H.
