Starting to try shooting sporting clays--got a682 Gold E with a DeVault stock & Delrin rib, with a Spears release--thinking of getting my old Devault 391 conversion back

The 682 weighs the same as my Infinity, while the 391 is about one lb lighter

All the guns are set up for trap

Will I be wasting my time with the above guns, or should I get a dedicated sporting gun

Phil, You know enough Sporting shooters, so ask a few if you may shoot their guns, and go from there.

My advise is just don't toss money into it, without trying different Sporting guns first.

It doesn't take an expensive gun to be a good shooting gun.

Now on the other hand, we don't need to loose another trap shooter to sporting, so don't get too comfy...LOL

Lots of high rib guns on the sporting circuit now.Try what you have just lower your point of impact if you can if it's really high. Most shoot around 60/40.

You're asking the same question twice, and the answer is 'yes'.

I switched from Trap to Sporting because my old club lost the skeet and 5 stand to shoot in summer. It is so hot in Florida in the summer you would think they wood make a covered shooting frame on wheels so it could be rolled back for handicap also. Sitting or standing on the line in the blazing sun for 25 shots you need a towel. For health reasons I like sporting as I only shoot 6 shells and then golf cart it to my next station in the shade or at least covered. Back to the guns I converted most of my guns to sporting with mostly light mod or mod chokes and 60/40 patterns. Perazzi with release /pull My Beretta same Release/pull 28 ga for sub gauge. K32 traded unsingle barrel for 3 barrel set 20/28/410 release/release never changed the triggers. As long as they were flat shooting a piece of cake did have to change the K32 stock was way to high got a used one from e bay as I was banned on you know where. A lot of sporting shooters shoot autos quite popular your 391 would be a good start if it shoots 60/40. My best scores in the last 5 years have been with Beretta 303's

I made the switch to clays as well. I no longer shoot ATA but do occasionally shoot trap at the club in a league. I sold the K32 and bought an original Rem 32 someone had put big money into. It’s a 30 in instead of a 32 in., lighter for clays. I shoot fixed IM/F. The gun works fine for trap as well.

Talking about selling guns I had a 3200 Live Bird gun with 28" barrels never shot it , it had the same engraving as a Browning Midas

But the real kicker was a shooting bud of mine passed away ,his name was Jim Whaley--I was asked by his wife to help unload some of his reloading stuff-I asked what happened to Jim's K-80 live bird gun & Silver Seitz--she told me she sold them--the K-80 went for $3000.00 & the Seitz went for $8000.00-- wish she would have asked me to look up the value of those guns

I shot ( tried to ) Sporting Clays twice, found it to be a very interesting game ... I didn't have a SC gun so I shot it with my Model 12 (Trap gun) rather than shoot another persons gun ... I found it to be a very Humbling experience but considerably fun at the same time ... I shot 72 the first round (talk about stink up the place) then after a quick lunch shot a 68, was a little surprised to find I was not the low man on the squad ,as a matter of fact I was 3rd out of 6 guys, but had fun none the less ... I used a Trap gun and trap loads, don't see me running out and buying a SC gun but can sure as hell see me shooting it again (just for fun) ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

If you want to make it a little more "fun" here is what we have done a few times. First you need 5 or 6 guys that like to shoot for SOMETHING. Practice is OK and you can have a good time ribbing each but to make it a little more competitive
( that's what we all like right?) try this. I'm sure some of you guys have watched or heard of a "skins" game in golf.

Get some poker chips, I brought a different color for each shooter but it probably doesn't matter. Designate a value for each chip. For instance, 50 cents each. You can make it whatever you like. A dollar each would have been OK but we had a couple guys that had NEVER shot anything but "practice" and we didn't want to beat them up with an $18.00 loss on top of the course fee.

Divide the chips equally between the shooters based on the number of stations. At the club we shot there were 17 stations so I gave each guy 18 chips. At 50 cents each that equaled $9.00 each that went in the cigar box. Your wallet will work, I just brought the box for kicks.

I used an empty plastic 1Lb. coffee container with a slit in the lid as the "receptacle" to hold the chips as we walked around the course. Tied it to my shell bag.

When you start on the first station everyone puts a chip in the can. High score on that station wins the chips.
TWO TIE, ALL TIE, and the chips stay in the can for the next station where everyone deposits another chip in the can.

Same thing on the second station. High on that station gets ALL the chips in the can, two tie, ALL tie and it carries over to the third where you all put another chip in the can. Accidently shaking the can while someone that was straight was shooting might have happened a few times.

You keep doing that on each station until someone finally wins that station and empties the can. Then, you start over with each guy putting in a chip. The odd number of stations required an extra chip so the last station would be 2 chips each equaling $1.00 each for that station.

I told one of the guys that was having a problem understanding how it worked.

Here's the deal. On the station that you are high, say you got all six, YOU will be hoping no one else breaks them all.
You will hear the other guys that missed shouting encouragement to the other shooters to break them all so it carries over.

It works both ways. On one station you will be hoping someone hits a target to force a tie and the very next station you hope he goes blind and misses to do the same.

You can't win much and it's not intended to be a money maker but it sure beats shooting for NOTHING. Remember the days on the Trap line when you used to bet your shooting pal a coffee or a coke? Hell, Leo Cerar and I used to bet a quarter. It wasn't the money, it was the bragging rights. One time I was on station 4 and he was on 5. When we changed I looked down and he had put the quarter on the pad so I would see it. Still laugh about that once in a while.

Anyway, the "skins" game on the SC course was a hoot. The 3 or 4 stations before the last one were carry overs so there was a LOT of noise as each guy stepped in the stand. When we got back to the clubhouse we cashed in our chips and ribbed the guy that didn't win a station. I will not reveal that shooters name or initials because he is a good friend.

635 G.....Good for you !! It's great that you want to try a new shooting sport, and you're probably gonna have so much fun and meet so many great people that you're gonna wonder why it took you so long to do it! I know from experience because that's exactly what happened to me. I started off shooting trap many years ago and discovered sporting clays 20 years ago. I started out using my trap gun thinking "hey shooting clays is shooting clays right?" WRONG I found my trap gun really hindered my improvement in SC. I can't begin to tell you the number of different guns I bought, tried out, borrowed, bought more, traded for, traded in, bought back, etc. until I finally found THE gun, And then had that one customized to fit me just right. The point being that using the right tool for the right job made shooting SC so much more fun for me. I'm sure there are a thousand gun trial stories just like mine. Just take the time to try, try, try different guns if you can. I guarantee you'll get one into your hands that'll make you say this is the one.........

P.S. It's great to have run across a forum where trap shooters and SC shooters can interact without one discipline running down the other.......thanks, I for one appreciate it !!

That’s the difference between us and other “trap” shooting sites. Here you can run across SC’s shooters. Other places they get run OVER. The really funny thing is the biggest offenders don’t even shoot that much Trap.

Point of impact of your gun is different for sporting clay's than in trap, where targets are typically shot on the rise or flat. I would guess the majority of SC shooter are 60/40 or 50/50. My guns are 50/50. That being said, about any gun can be adjusted (rib, stock and pitch) to shoot where you want it to. If you are hot to buy something new, I suggest you attend one of the major sporting clay's shoots where most of the manufacturers have demo gun to shoot and see what fits you best. Or just ask to test shoot fellow shooters guns at clay courses.

Trouble is I shoot release triggers, and my old 391 is shoots sporting clays great & I won a lot with it before going to the Infinity--should have have stayed with girl I took to the dance, never cared what the POI was , as long s it smoked targets is what mattered to me--the Infinity is about 140% while the 391 is 65/35--what works is what counts

I shoot a double release. They work for me.
