POLL - Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em? What if you smell weed, pot, marijuana on your squad? POLL

Discussion in 'Trapshooting Forum - Americantrapshooter.com' started by merlo, Nov 14, 2023.

?

If you are shooting on a squad at a shoot and you smell marijuana, what should / will you do?

  1. Stop the squad and ask if anyone is smoking pot?

  2. Mention it to the scorer.

  3. Call for shoot management.

  4. Ask for a joint between banks.

  5. Call 911.

  6. Ignor it.

  7. Depends on the venue.

  8. Politely stop the squad and leave.

  9. Try not to inhale.

  10. Roll your own.

The State of Ohio recently passed a law legalizing the recreational use of marijuana.

What if you smell marijuana while shooting? What if you are a scorer? What is the responsibility of shoot management?

Hell, I've smelled it on the scorer. :)
I would say "no harm, no foul" until some one starts acting stupid or in a dangerous manner.
Shoot management would have to take a different approach, due to the legal aspects and public safety.

i began shooting to avoid pot heads.
i assumed sportsmen were a cut above the others.
i stick to that mindset.....for now.

Per the rule book page 40 , for registered shooting:

It is the responsibility and the required duty of Shoot Management to immediately remove and disqualify any contestant at any time during an ATA sanctioned tournament: a. who is under the obvious influence of alcohol or drugs before starting or during any event, sub-event, shoot-off or practice, or who consumes any alcoholic beverage or drugs during participation in any event, sub event or between events or sub events held on the same day including shoot-offs and practice. For purposes of this rule, “drugs” shall mean any illegal, or recreational drug, and shall also mean any prescription medication if that prescription medication affects the judgement or conduct of the contestant to a degree that renders the contestant incapable of safely participating in the sport of trapshooting, whether during a registered event and/or tournament or practice; or b. who handles a gun dangerously on or off the firing line, or c. who deliberately or carelessly violates gun safety precautions, Official Rules regarding safety, or in any manner endangers contestants, spectators, or gun club personnel.

    Also page 8 below

    8. Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and the ATA Rules pertaining to the usage of alcohol and/or drugs must be enforced by Shoot Management. This Rule shall be strictly complied with and shall apply to practice shooting as well as registered and tournament events. (Rule XII, B., 2., a.)

How many shooters are taking prescription pain medication at shoots? People act like pot is heroin or meth. If anything if a shooter is smoking pot you better get to the food vendors before he does if you want anything to eat!

Personally, I think it’s going to be as big of a problem as the beer tent at Vandalia was…so not much.

We visited the beer tent after the shoot. OP question is during the shoot.

Idea….Ohio could give out bongs and pipes as trophies.

Right, because the beer tent wasn’t open while shooting was going on, oh wait.

Smoking weed during a shoot wouldn’t impair anyone any more than drinking alcohol. Both can be done responsibly or irresponsibly, both should be handled the same.

I know plenty of shooters who indulge in alcohol during the shoot, as well. Why worry about a non issue?

    Why? If they're safe, they're safe. I don't care what they're on.

If they're unsafe, which is obvious to anyone with eyes, remove them. Other than that, who cares?

I know shooters who smoke pot/drink or both before they shoot. Never any safety issues.

The real problem is some of them shoot better after a few beers and that's not fair to the tea only drinkers.

That's what I've mostly seen. People upset, after those same shooters (drinking/smoking) beat them on a weekly basis.

Your right I got a buddy who drinks like a fish goes to a shoot doesn’t drink a drop, except water he’s had at least 8 to 10 beers and shoots a hundred straight in all 4 gauges and you would never know, very safe and responsible with a weapon

If that’s their decision to do that any type of accident would be a big problem.should they kill somebody. I know people who can perform as good as anyone doing this . But when accidents happen it’s a liability problem.

Wrong again. I haven't smoked a cigarette in over 25 years and emphasize to my students it's never a good idea to rely on alcohol to aid scoring. That said, I've never seen anyone have an accident with a firearm after drinking a few beers and neither did you. I've seen a few incidents of accidental discharges by individuals who were stone cold sober. My advice to you is go out and drink a cold one and enjoy life a little.

Good morning O. I’m only saying be careful if you smoke or drink.. another thing I haven’t seen is an AIRPLANE FALL OUT OF THE SKY OR a car accident killin anyone, I guess there many things I haven’t seen, that happens, and as you say .stop being a pain to people and realize other people have different ideas, I don’t know you but I’m going out on a limb and say YOU ARE THE SMARTEST PERSON IN THE WORLD

You're certainly right about the "smart" thing. I'd say you've got a better chance getting struck by lightning than seeing one accident happen to a shooter after his squadmate drinks a few beers. Well. they say drinking a few beers before shooting prevents the need for release triggers. Now, how many times did you see someone blast away at traphouses while using a release trigger?

I remember being at a certain club and standing on the trap line with the wind in my face. I looked over at my squad mate and asked if he could smell that skunk. "Where's it coming from", I asked with a squinched up nose. He replied, "it's the trap boy he's loading the house." :):)
About then I felt pretty naive. Guess I'm really getting old.

Page 40 of the rule book is clear about shoot management removing anyone who is in the process of using alcohol or taking drugs (which includes marijuana) while participating in a shoot event, as in on the line. Yes, the problem is detecting use such as someone eating pot gummies. We should all be aware of the behavior of our fellow shooters before taking the line with them, if possible; but I realize sometimes that's also not possible. As a pharmacist, I am probably more aware of the signs and symptoms of substance use/abuse, such as dilated pupils, slurred speech, abnormal response to stimuli, etc. and can also state that the marijuana used today is much more potent than that used 20 years ago. That being said, I want to trust that fellow shooters use good safe judgement when participating, and that they care about fellow shooters and the liability they face if not sober enough to handle a gun.

That would halt nearly half of the shoots in pa. After bringing your gun, and shell bag, the next thing is a cooler.
