Winchester Super Targets........trash!!!

Plus I'm not happy. Bought a flat of Winchester Super Target shells last year. Number 8 shot-- 12 gauge. I thought I would take them out today and try a couple boxes. I had my Ljutic and started to shoot singles. The first hull stuck in the shotgun. That had never happened before to me. I went back to get the ramming rod which was made of fiberglass and when I went to shove the hull out of the barrel my hands slid down that fiberglass rod and OUCH!! I got a handful of fiberglass whiskers in my trigger finger and my thumb. That ticked me off enough. I tried the second round and the same thing happened. After the third one did the same thing I quit using those shells. Luckily, my day was not a total loss I had taken two boxes of reloads with me- STS which worked perfectly. So after two rounds of singles I was done for the day. When I got home I thought that maybe since my Ljutic only had an extractor, maybe they would work better in one of my other trap guns. I have a brand new BT99 and I tried one of the spent hulls into that gun. I could not even get the spent hull into the gun. The hull was expanded so badly the BT-99 would not even close. I hope that I am not going to have to shove the empty hulls through my guns with an entire flat of shells.

Anyone else had problems with these? They are brand new shells. Not reloads. I might have to try them in my Beretta 686. Hopefully they should eject in my Remington 870. In the meantime, I'll be picking pieces of fiberglass out of my fingers. Thanks.

If you shoot the new shells through your BT99 they should eject. You have a different bore diameter with the Ljutic and that’s probably what’s wrong. Steel shells are notoriously difficult to eject in most American made single barrel trap guns. At least that’s been my experience with several of them. YMMV

 

I have 2 Browning's, a GTI and a Special Sporting, that do not like Winchester Super Targets. Get stuck all the time. They also do not like the Browning target shell, which is like a steel based AA. They stick too. I just shoot the Federal 4 packs if doing the econo shell thing.

 

the steel bases crack when I shoot them out a semi auto.

sad day when the market has steered us to choosing between super targets and fed 4 packs.
heck gun clubs are out of reach these days.

ehhhh....my m12 doesn't like anything steel. 87o may be the same.

Federal's Top Gun, Gold Medal Grand, and Field & Target loads are also steel-headed.
Only the High Over All Federal target loads are brass, and they don't come in 4-packs.
So, apparently some steel-headed shells do not stick as often in your guns as other steel-headed shells?

 

Personally Great luck with them in my Seitz and Guerini and KX-6 Special. Reload well too.

 

I shot 100 at the Grand last year. It was embarrassing having to poke every third or fourth shell out of my 90T.

 

I haven't shot any Super Target loads yet, but a nearby food store had the 3 dr./ 1 1/8oz loads for $8.99 when I stopped by on the way home from Powder Creek Shooting Park yesterday. That's a decent price, even for bottom-tier target loads, and I bought six boxes. Hope they function in my Brownings and Berettas.

 

That’s common, my Ljutic’s generally do OK with the Federal Top Guns but these Super Targets and Rio’s to a lesser degree stick. I’m not sure what the difference is, but I just don’t buy the Super Targets for that (reason #1).

I have also shot the Super Targets in my Brownings, had no problem but I didn’t care for the breaks either, so again- I just don’t buy them (Reason #2).

 

Would it be unsafe to run them through a MEC supersizer and "squish" them down a tad?

Unsafe or not, it is unlikely to solve the problem.

It will not help to squish them down. The pressure in the chamber is expanded in the shell base. Steel bases do not retract as brass does. Roger C.

 

they stick because they expand. squishing them (resizing them loaded) only will make them travel further when fired!

I bought a bunch of Winchester Super Targets for the grandkids shooting the high school trap / skeet and SC..... I got behind on reloads for myself so last Thursday I took 4 boxes to our Thursday night trap league.....The first round of Trap I had 4 stuck hulls in my Ljutic.......had to drop the brass slug down the barrel to dislodge the stuck hulls.....My Ljutic does not like fiochi, gun club, or Super Targets.

 

I've never had a hull stick in any of my guns that I can remember. Oh well!!

 

many pistols had the same issue years ago when they came out with steel casings designed to lighten the weight of a carry gun for leos. once they put steel casings in a gun designed for brass casings, they started getting jams and sticks.
brass is unique, its expands but still gives and is smooth coming out. steel expands and stays expanded when still hot.
ask anyone who reloads with a mec 600. ask how many times or how hard it is to resize a steel hull over an old fashioned sts or aa.
they don't call the steel hulls cheap and (throw away) for nothing.

 

They stick in my Infinity, they also stick in a Silver Seitz

 

You’ll find the same issues with Herters shells sold at pro bass and Cabalas seeing there a clone shell made by Winchester

 

3rd world ammo quality in a world power country.

I have shot about 8 flats of super targets since last year and never had a FTF or stuck case in either my KX6 special or my MX14, maybe they ship the better ones to Canada

 

Steel base shells would stick in my Remington 90T - bought a $6 set of brass brushes from Harber Freight for my Dremel. Ran it in my chamber, it left a brass wash on the surface. Worked great. Did it every time I cleaned my gun. Never had a problem again.

 

Show me the rebate and I’ll buy as many as I can!

For about the same price I can shoot Clevers RX1’s Super targets and Universal’s both are junk. I’ve seen a lot of side crimps and various other deformed shells come out of those boxes.

 

nothing wrong with the shells. with a steel base; that is just the way it is with some guns. i shoot top guns in a ljutic and have no problem. my friend's ljutic has at least one out of every 10 that will not eject.

 

I shoot them out of 2 K80's and a Perazzi. No problems!

 

They stick in my Ljutic and SSeitz.

I just shoot premium and eat the price

 

The only two shells my three Wingmasters don't like are Winchester promos and Gamebore Evos. The strange part is they don't stick until the barrel gets hot. You would think the barrel would expand. Cold barrel no problem. These are 70's Wingmasters, fixed chokes not express. They eat Federal four packs all day long.

 

shot them in my beretta 303. many did not open the bolt or let the second shell be loaded. on doubles some of them did not eject properly. Tried them in m y 391 same problem. Tried them in my seitz. had to use a rod to push them out. JUNK JUNK I;ll never buy them again.

 

A friend who is VERY knowledgeable about Model 12's, told me to never shoot steel based hulls in a Model 12. The guns were not designed to accommodate steel and excessive wear occurs.

Complain the the manufactures not to other shooters. The steel expands from the pressure , the brass bases expand and then contract. that is why all good reloaders have resizing station. Roger C.

They work fine in my K-80's. Not a single problem.

 

Only if the steel expands past its yield point.
Only an excessively-large chamber would allow for that.

 

A possible explanation might be this:
The hot barrel gets larger. This allows the steel heads to expand further upon firing. The steel heads then expand past their yield point and don't return to original size. They then are a tight fit and "stick".
Be my guess.

 

if that were true, the first few shots wouldn't stick.
and I believe brass cools faster than steel, thus why it comes out easier.

 

They are pure SHIT!! These things can cost $2 a box and I would not shoot them.

I don't believe that is the case.
It could be....but I've never seen evidence that a 100 degree temperature increase affects surface friction to any appreciable degree (pun intended).
Got to be expansion: if the shell goes INTO the chamber easily, but won't come OUT easily, then ID's or OD's have changed.
Since we're all guessing, that'd be my guess.

 

I haven't met a Ljutic that likes Win super target ammo. They defiantly stick in Ljutic shotguns.

I'd go with the Xtralite and they still pack a punch
