What is the latest news out of Illinois regarding the future of the World Shooting Center at Sparta. I have googled this subject using different wording and am not coming up with anything some articles dated back to June 2015. I do not recall seeing anything for July or August per this subject. If this is indeed a crises situation for ATA Trap shooting why is there not something new out of the State of Illinois by this time. Has anyone heard anything that is current of the the State of Illinois. Birddog
August 02, 2015 7:00 am • By Les Winkeler Les Winkeler les.winkeler@thesouthern.com For the moment, expediency trumps concern at the Amateur Trapshooting Association and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Officials with both organizations are too busy dealing with the details of getting this week’s Grand American off the ground to worry about Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner’s earlier threat to shutter Sparta’s World Shooting and Recreational Complex. The Grand American will be conducted Aug. 5-15. The event has been held at Sparta since 2006. Earlier this summer, Rauner suggested the WSRC might be shuttered in September as the result of Illinois’ ongoing budget crisis. The ATA has signed a contract with the IDNR binding the Grand American, the world’s largest trapshooting event, to the WSRC through 2026. Illinois is still without a budget agreement. “We’re still hopeful they (Gov. Rauner and the Illinois General Assembly) get it worked out and we get back to concentrating on throwing targets without distractions," said Lynn Gipson, executive director of the ATA. "I think Rep. (Jerry) Costello’s actions have been beneficial and taken a message to Springfield -- this is kind of a big deal. “We’re planning everything just like we always do. Our shooters don’t have to pre-resgister, but a lot of them do. Sometimes it’s a little indication of how its’ going to run. We’re a little ahead of last year, about 5 percent. That’s a good sign.” In the meantime, the IDNR, which operates the facility, is taking the same tack. “We’re delighted to host them again and looking forward to seeing all the shooters in Sparta again for the next two weeks,” said IDNR spokesperson Tim Schweizer. “It’s a terrific facility. The director is committed to making a success of the WSRC, but at the moment, we’re still waiting on approval of a state budget.” The facility’s fate will not be determined until the state adopts a budget. Sooooooo, let just wait and see. Birddog
