A driverless car has now hit a pedestrian. Who gets charged with this? What if the car keeps going? Who gets charged with hit and run?

Who is liable for the insurance on a driver less car? What if the car is defective? who is responsible for any damage or loss of life? Sounds like a wind fall for the ambulance chasers. I would never have one until all of the questions are answered in a court of law. Roger C.

That lady that was hit is in 6 feet of doo-doo. I'm am querious as to how this will play out. They said there was a driver in the car at the time. Want to bet he is going to be the fall guy. Roger C.

Well the Uber car had a human operator that was suppose to be supervising the operation of the car, so it looks like a human was at fault too. The company has suspended all operations of self driving cars on public roads. In the last few months around here we have had drunk illegals who have crashed which resulted in multiply deaths. When are they going to get around to suspending them?

I'm in my 60s now, I'm looking forward to self driving cars. It will be nice to have your car drive you to doctors, hospitals, etc and not have to depend or ask other people to drive.

The video shows the driver looking down at something (texting maybe ) , looked up a few seconds and then back down, then up again just as they hit ... The lady who got hit was pushing a bike, crossing and not in a cross walk, but dead is still dead ... This ought to be interesting ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

yeah, I saw the video too. I'm glad I wasn't driving because I would have hit the woman too, don't know if you can blame the technology behind the driver less car, that woman came out of nowhere. The driver less car I'm sure has better night vision than some old guy like me who has cataracts. I challenge anybody to watch that video and say they could have avoided that collision?

Elsie, The video I seen the driver of that car was not looking where it was going. He was looking down. His job was to correct any mistakes the car made, he did not do the job he was supposed to do. Please do not blame the victom. Roger C.

I guess I am old school in many ways, but I do not and have never given a driver less car one second of thought ... There is a point when things get a little out of hand to the point of being ridiculous, driver less car I would think should go in that column ... My opinion is this is someone with way to much time on their hands or having flash backs of drug use in the past ... When and where does this crap end, how many times does there have to be an incident to dictate this is not a good idea ..? WPT ... (YAC) ...

WPT, you wouldn't like to get into your car and just say take me to the doctor, dentist, grocery store and have it drive you there. The people who will benefit most from self driving cars are older people, and I'm rapidly closing in on that segment of the population.

    Elsie,
I am in that segment and no way would I want to have a self driving car, just don't seem right to me ... Be like a blow up doll for a date, that list can go on and on ... No thank you .... WPT ... (YAC) ....

Elsie, The question is who is going to carry the risk for these cars that malfunction and cause injuries or death to innocent persons? There are incidents that come up that even experienced drivers can not correct. How can a machine compensate for an unexpected incident. The idea sounds great, but in reality it carries much risk. I will opt out of the self driving car. Roger C.

Roger, WPT how many people lose their lives now with human operators - 50,000 a year??? I don't know that was the figure years ago, things are probably better now but I bet it is still at least 35-40K a year. And Roger who carries the risk of a drunk illegal now with no insurance? I'm in Indiana and just in the last few months in our area - drunk illegals with no insurance have cause multiple deaths. I'll take my chances on the road with a driver less car than a drunk, or some 95 year old driver. Times are changing. I like driving - my dream is to still get a high HP sports car and drive it on Pacific Coast Highway 1 between San Diego and Seattle. Did it a couple of times in a family sedan, just hope I can do it with a 400hp plus standard shift Mustang or something similar. I say that only because I want you to know I'm not one of these people who hate driving, but I also know someday I will be 80 and with all of my family spread out across the country and not here locally it would be nice to just get into a self driving car and have it take me to the doctor office or grocery, etc.. instead of being dependent on somebody else.

Elsie, I did not say it was a bad idea. I ask who is going to be responsible for the actions of a pilot less car in the event of a serious or fatal accident. Self driving cars will not diminish the illegals driving in this country drunk or sober. Do you think over night only self driven cars will only be on the roads. Thank the Dem's for the illegal problems we have in this country, and the spinlless elected officials in Washington DC. I'm over 80 now , and I will never see the day when I can get in a car and say take me any where I want to go. Roger C.

Hey Roger, I read once if you make it to 80 there is a good chance you will live to be 95 so who knows. Maybe in 2028 you will decide to go to the Grand in Sparta and all you will have to do is tell your car - take me to the Grand, heck maybe you'll have a van and can sit in the back and reload shells while it drives you there. LOL Along the way tell it to squad you and it could just drive you up to your bank and drop you off just in time to shoot handicap.:) LOL

As far as liability - I guess that will be something for the legal profession to sort out, and that will be far behind the technology of driverless cars. I'm guessing and have heard that the auto companies don't want us to actually own our vehicles in the future that we'll just be purchasing a license to use their vehicles, sort of like the way we purchase downloaded music now. We can use it, drive it, sell our license to use it, etc.. but Ford or Chevy will actually still own the vehicle, that way we can't legally modify it, etc... Ford, Chevy will own it - repair it and be ultimately responsible for it.

Roger, I don't know about your health. But I drive a Tesla and it is pretty impressive in the self driving catagory. Not perfect by a long shot but impressive.
I expect you will live to see the day you can say "take me home." I really do.

Jakearoo, Every time you get in your car you had better hope the trip is perfect, other wise you may not need a car any longer. With you behind the wheel, there is a chance to avoid an accident, but do you think any machine is more intelligent than a competent human? I have worked with machines all of my life, none were smarter than me. Roger C.
