ATA 18 yard Handicap ends

About 4 years late Huh?

 

So who voted for that stupid money punch rule and why did it suddenly become a stupid rule this year? Maybe they'll all grow up one day and realize the 15 shooter punch is another stupid rule that should be rescinded immediately. Then again, not if MS get's their way.

 

Well, I’m screwed. How am I supposed to hit anything from the 19? The struggle is already real at 16 yard singles! Gulp!

When I joined the ATA in 1974, every one started their handicap at the 22 yard line. Learn to shoot the 16's and the Hdk. will be no different. Every thing remains the same until you reach the 25 yd. line. Then you must smooth out and not jump at the targets. Turn off the panic button. Do not shoot Hdk. use the money to shoot more 16's and more practice on the 16's.
Frank Little always said, no one is ready to shoot Hdk. until he can roll 25, 16's up in a little tight ball. He was a pretty good shooter, so I believed every thing he told me. Roger C.

A TRUE 18-yard shooter should easily be a "D-Class" singles shooter ...... if I look here ..... http://rjstuart.com/Trophies/2018/classic.htm ..... at the winning "D-Class" singles scores, those "D-Class" singles shooters that should be on the 18-yard line" should have DOMINATED all the handicap events ...... Getting tons of earned yardage, thus no longer being a perceived "18-yard line" problem ......

So, again, congrats to the ATA in your sincere efforts to speed up your own death spiral ....... by problem solving the wrong problems ......

 

Thanks Roger. I posted in jest above but do appreciate the advice. I am actually on the 20 and still a D-Class shooter although flirting with C-Class, just not there yet. I'm determined though and still having fun and learning something each time out.

As a 20 yard shooter I agree. I shot from the 22 at the State Shoot due to penalty and posted the same scores as I do from the 20 so I would even be OK with a 1974 format as posted by Roger. I also refused my reduction to 19 a few weeks back because I just didn't feel like I could comfortably live with it. A punch yes, a reduction no.

Why? Yes it was abused in a few cases, but the 20 and 21 have been abused plenty more! They didn't change this to make the ones happy that don't know the meaning of the word handicap, they changed it to make it easier for themselves just like the Rachel rule on categories. They took their list and steered these people into thinking they changed the rule because members wanted it when the truth was they didn't offer any changes that they already hadn't decided to make anyway and these dumb asses fell right into it. You didn't see any choices on more concrete did you?

 

I can go here ..... http://rjstuart.com/pages/trophies2018.htm ..... look at "earned yardage" at the Cardinal Classic and count five(5) punches from the "18" ...... and sixty(60) "honorary" punches from the "27" .....

So, what "problem" was solved ???????

That paragraph did not change. A 96 still gets a mandatory 1/2 yard.

 

I think it was changed to make squadding easier for the large shoots. They also changed the yardage separation rule, you can have 3 yards difference as long as the short yarder is not next to the longest yarder on the squad. I think it will help the time element, meaning less partial squads. Now they should work on getting rid of some of the categories. Roger C.

 

Roger, it may help the time element but I personally do not like this rule which allows shooters with different handicap yardages to shoot on the same squad. Just thinking about another shooter standing somewhere behind me with a loaded gun in battery gives me the shivers.

I am not aware of any accidents that have occurred because of this rule but that doesn't mean it's a good rule. I think it sends the wrong message to those who were taught the rules of gun safety.

Many will disagree with me, but given the choice, I will always choose safety over convenience every time.

 

I read your post and looked at Grand Week. Five punches from the 18 or 18.5 and over 550 honorary punches from the 27. The change should make a lot more people competitive in their handicap game and encourage them to play the options! I could be off a couple, I got tired of counting. Actually counted 575.

 

Those darn 18 yd. shooters were winning all those trinkets and there were none left for the 20 yrdrs. Waa,waa waa.

 

Let's look at this from another perspective. My 11 yo son averages around 82% from the 18 yd. line. His highest handicap score this year was an 87. I suppose we should congratulate him for his 1 yd. increase. I wonder how that compares to Campbell's average, wins and honorary yards, yet, he's still standing on the 27. Thank you ATA idiots who voted for a rule that hastens the demise of the organization. Those delegates were totally clueless.
